Hi! Antoher great contest mission! Soo complicated, hard to discover everything
Unfortunately, i have to restart the mission, I KOed everíbody, incl. that guard to the firebell objective... but never mind now i have the routine.
I don't know why but that prisoner (with the interactive plate) didn't say a word just standing there silently. Is he supposed to give a riddle or a quest?
And i managed to get the very very top of the city and i saw a drunken guy with an arrow on the floor and a not pickable lock. What to do with him?

    +
I found a closed door in Cistern Court when going down the stairs, there is a little balcony high up. The door is not pickable, and no key in the inventorí for that door... How could i go in? Is that place Pud's apartment ?

    Thank you very much!

Look for a key in Rose Garden to open that door.

Thank you, i managed to find it! Only much more later, i figured out what to give Pud in the cell and i only then got the hint for that key i already had.

    Coud someone please help me,
    1. how to get the Master Forger's golden plate ? I can see it, very high on his house, it highlights when i am close enough but can't frob it.

    2. Furthermore, there are 3 strange little doors, is any openable?
    a) rose garden, in the tavern, at stairs, above a statue. i can get up the beams and can hit the iron door, but how to open?
    b) still rose garden tavern, top floor, turning left, right after that dead thief, there is a flooded room, with a little metal hatch, is it openable?
    c) at Grandmauden, just before entering the library, there is a hall with 5-6 statues, high up beams and a little wooden door closed with padlock. no sound when hitting it.

    3. what to do with those stange symbols, f.e. 17, 383, F3, (wwDJ (or something like that...) and so on?

    4. What about the Golden Books?

    5. can i visit the archive?

Maybe i should have choose english language, i played with german translations. (BTW, in the german texts some words slipped together right after a "ß" (scharfes s) letter so i think i missed some useful info.)

But... WOW... what a city to discover!
I wish i could freely fly around this mission, I wonder how many places did i miss...

Having now spent hours prodding this FM and Disorientation in DromEd over the course of a few months, I think I have to rescind my preference for the latter. There are a few moments of picturesque elegance in Disorientation, e.g. having to duck your head on a ledge just south of Lady Eventroit's home, forcing the player to look and move in one direction to produce this vista...

... which opens out as you move forward. These moments make Disorientation special.

However, on average, I think the unbelievable level of detail in Rose Garden tends to produce a richer experience. While I and others might have some niggles about aspects of the plot or the main objectives, I don't know if I've played another Thief mission whose high points were so high. Exploring this mission provides frequent and intensely satisfying rewards -- finding myriad secrets, navigating nooks and crannies and successfully climbing dizzying towers and ledges.

The architecture and room layout is staggering, and shows off the capacity of stock resources. I found playing this mission a far more immersive experience that any FM that has attempted to be more photo-realistic. More so than basically any other Thief mission, I forget that I am piloting a camera moving around a polygon world, and I think this effect results from the arrangement of terrain and objects, not in their graphical fidelity. It has the effect that every 'walking simulator' is intended to have, and never does.

(No single screenshot has the effect that actually being able to look around this mission does, so here are a half-dozen from Cistern Court)

These are shots from different sides and heights of a single cul-de-sac. It isn't some grand centrepiece of the mission; in fact, it's reasonably out of the way in the north, and totally unnecessary to your main objectives. And every single area of this massive FM is as fleshed out, or more so, than this one unassuming spot. It is a marvelous achievement, and one I am very appreciative of.

This mission is not flawless. However, I think its troughs are few and comparatively shallow, heavily outweighed by its innumerable peaks. It is clearly a labour of love, and a supremely rewarding experience.

    Lord Taffer: Whatever you like!

DirkBogan: Thanks! The mission is definitely a labour of love, and I wanted it to have a certain mysterious beauty - a bit like Calendra's Cistern, which was one of my primary sources of inspiration.

When the guy I was supposed to protect from the ambush got to the destination safely I was glad to have accomplished my mission when the skull and crossbones appeared telling me I failed...LOL. Apparently the mines I placed beforehand on some of the X markings which I hoped would eliminate any bad guys that spawned there seemed to have also blown up a servant or aristocrat. So I had to start that part over and placed no mines at all. Then I was able to finish the game. I still don't know how to solve that puzzle in that room above the balcony. Also getting down from that balcony to the ground will cost a life or a lot of damage so I made sure to stack some boxes to jump down on.

Melan, I think I'm going to kill you ! (joke... ;-)
I though the city experience is very tough - a lot of hidden places, many gates closed, a lot of ways in highs, in vent shafts, etc. and hair tearing roof jumping (yes, that gas arrow, lock with big painted arrow on roof, and many others). But this was BEFORE Bernalt escort.

Because Bernault escort is the right hair tearing experience. I deleted all cross markings but still a lot of assasins spawn. I'm very bad at sword fight so arranging mines at assasin spawn position is a way. However positioning of mines is a terrible try and error experience and I'm missing mines. Moreover something unknown always disturbs Bernault and he run away to Grandmauden building. Objective not ticked nor failed death screen. I'm desperate.

    Any hints please?

To be clear - the missions is great, amazing !!!

Bernalt is supposed to go to Grandmauden's building. You need to find a way inside.

If there are still assassins being spawn on Bernault path, that means you didn't in fact erased all cross markings. Check where assassins are located, reload save from before using bell lever, go to these places and search carefully. Some of these cross markings are very well hidden. As for something disturbing Bernault, maybe there are unconscious bodies lying in shadow nearby his path and he see them. This actually happened to me.

I have found that disturbing of Bernault causes him to run and he's able to avoid assasins when running. They're able to chase him but attempt to attack Bernault delays assasin so Bernault can run away...

Finished in 7 hours 29 minutes. Amazing mission.

26 minutes into this mission, and I've been killed 3x for gawking at the scenery/textures. Amazed by what was done with basic T1 stuff. The areas of architectural crowding work great in so many ways. A lot of thought went into how things got lit as well. Just brilliant! And the story is fun! My hat is off to Melan for making something that made me completely forget about the pain in my busted toes.

    My favorite bit so far:

    Awesome!!!

I have not even finished yet. I haven't figured out a fraction of the mysteries that seem to be hidden.

But I just had to comment about how completely blown away by this incredible mission I am.

This is, hands down, the greatest cityscape ever in Thief. I have truly died and gone to Thief heaven. The nooks and crannies that are there to be explored, the incredible depth and scope of the design, the almost maniacal attention to detail, the diabolical cleverness of loot locations, the variety. . .

I cannot admire the work and thought that went into this project enough.

Greatest of all is that many areas require more than merely shooting a rope arrow here and there to get to them. Real exploring is necessary. Thinking outside of the box is called for at times.

I am having a blast and will actually be disappointed when I finish., and I absolutely refuse to read this thread to get any help. It's too much fun trying to figure it out on my own.

    [3 days later]
This just keeps getting better. Jaw-droppingly brilliant!

    Farewell to a great mission

Sadly, I must say goodbye to what has been one of my all time favorite missions of thief of any stripe.

Finished after taking my time (9hr 48min 22sec) and finding 3852 loot.

The only thing (that I actually know of) that I haven't been able to do is unlock a door in a little balcony at the end of a stairwell in Cistern Court (aside from the loot still to find, of course).

I have had a blast playing this one, and I did not refer to the mission thread a single time for help.

I haven't checked to see which mission won the contest, but this had to have been a very strong contender. I still have 9 missions to play for the contest. They have a high bar to reach now.

Okay so sudddenly there is some hammerhaunt on meth roaming the streets and killing anyone it encounters, as soon as it encounters a civilian it's game over for me.
Is that supposed to happen? And if so, why? I was really enjoying myself up to that point. It's not even an option to let the guards kill it since it has double or triple speed.
