A tiny request to mapmakers about main menu modification

In big missions some mapmakers changing the appeal of the menu (New game and so on...)
I know that you always want to do it better but in result many of these menus (especially in old maps) are became unreadable.
A most widespread problem is absent of letters.
    And it is extremely inconvenient.
I never saw these problems in the newer maps (maybe NewDark fixes these problems) but still.
I know nothing about mapmaking, but it looks like it is a font problem. Maybe you need to bundle font files withing mission archive? I really don't know how does it work, but the result is very unpleasant.

There are similar things with in-game text. Even if letters are drawn but there is a mess with carriage returns. Maybe it is Windows|Unix /r/n|/n problem. I don't know, but very often text doesn't fit into the page.

Yeah, I'm just whining, but what else can I do?

Good luck to you with Thief2 anniversary maps!

This might be an issue. Back in the days, nobody had (extreme) widescreen resolutions, 4k monitors, etc.
Give us some examples or even better, list the borked FMs.

Recent example: now I'm playing Calendra's legacy. No letters in the menu. Also, no text while quicksave. Ingame notes are fine.

Also problems while checking loot (I hope you do understand, when I scrolling through inventory): no text. Even the numbers are strange. They are too small, but I cannot be sure. May be it is intentional because of there is no loot quest in this mission.

Please post Thief2.log in code tags. It's in the root folder.

CL in 1920 x 1080 resolution is no issue under normal circumstances.
Is this a network drive or something? Tell us more about the setup.

You'll find the menu data in FM/intrface. Is it there?

Situation is difficult. Now I'm using GNU/Linux (through Wine) but the game is running flawlessly: everything is the same as at those times when I was using Windows. Under Windows these problems were the same. Nothing have changed.

I'm afraid i do not uderstand. Do I need to look for this information inside the archive?

Understood. So I see a bunch of old *.pcx format images. Where do I need to look at the text?

I asked for the network drive.

Open the FM archive (Calendra's Legacy.zip)
In intrface folder, you'll find the menu data. Note it. You need to compare it with with the installed FM intrface data. Is it the same data?

Exactly the same. All files are there and their size and metadata are also the same.

I also see the Newgame.str file. This information is readable ingame.
The only text I cannot see is the main menu text.

Maybe the path to the secret network drive is too long. I recommend a local drive for T2, for example C:\Games

    >too long

As I see Fm loader unpacks zip with the mission to FMs directory where the game is. So the source path of zip is no longer involved.

But thanks for your time. I'll try to play with dark.cfg (in the FM's subdirectory) (I saw there few strings about fonts types). maybe it'll lead me to something interesting.

I overlooked some parts of the log
The log says, OS is win 10. Correct?
Video card is ATI RADEON 7200 series. What? A almost 20 year old video device? Is this correct?

No, it is Linux, so Wine tells whatever it sees fit.
And in most cases it just works. And, as I told, these problems were the same under Windows with modern video card.

I'm not sure how does it called. Standard, which is compiled in the *.exe file.

    That's FMSel.
Switch to Windows a try it, maybe it's a wine issue in this case.

Hi A.Stahl I'm a Linux user too and have used wine to run thief for 7 years now - so it's possible.

I think that Unna Oertdottir is on to something regarding your Wine installation.

Do you have the correct versions of wine_gecko and wine-mono installed, along side a newer version of Wine?

I run Wine through PlayOnLinux so the installation of these differ from your installation.

The problem you describe in the OP, especially regarding the fonts sounds a lot like the absence of wine_gecko and wine-mono

    I'm using these:
Wine version 3.0 in 32bit, and version 3.2 in 64bit.

    And:
    wine_gecko-2.40-x86.msi

    wine_gecko-2.40-x86_64.msi

    wine-mono-4.5.6.msi

In the end your FMsel should look 99,9% like it does in windows, and once inside the thief game there shouldn't be any difference.

    >wine_gecko and wine-mono

But Gecko is a browser engine and mono is the .Net implementation. Why do you think that they have something to do with Thief2? Explain, please.

I'm by far no expert in Wine nor POL, I'm only suggesting that their absence could be the reason.
This summer when installing the new Linux Mint 19 and installing thief games, they didn't run properly before installing the 2 mentioned implements.
With Wine alone they ran as you described in the OP.

I missed that sorry. Then it properly hasn't got anything to do with wine.
