the beginning of mission 3 ("Spy") is very difficult; these things don't seem to connect, and now that I have the hatches open I die when I jump in! what am I missing?

Having trouble with that note inside the vault. I counted the stairs but what gear is it referring to? A flat out answer would be appreciated.

    Hint
Take a close look around in the top part of the tower.

    Solution
The room itself is the gear.

How do you get up to the balcony? and how do you get to the guard that has a key on his belt?
    Thanks

Hmmm... I am close to the end and have a few questions.

Air mail: what is the switch for the red light near the bats good for ?
I assume I need to escape via the roof. But how? Do I need to find something?

You don't need necessarily go to the balcony. There is a button, that's all. The guard with the key appears later.

I guess the switch for the red light near the bats is for the red light. That's all it seems to do.
And your second question is already answered in post #45.

it took me way too long to find the ladder in that room!

I can't access the conservatory balcony, air mail training, or part of military intelligence yet; what am I missing?
I believe at least one of these comes before the death ray/laser, captives, and secret weapon objectives, right?
    ----
conservatory balcony: when you get access to the ground floor, use an arrow through the railing
    yes, those objectives follow.
    ----
    now: escape?

    Of course,
main building map, lower floor, archive
    exact hint: under stairs

You will need one more book as well for ticking off that obejctive
living quarters map, upper floor, rest room
Now i see you have this.

(and that map you already have, these 3 things are needed - for all i know).

...but i played on expert, so i hope that that book will be at the same place

Have you tried this: the same archive, climb the ladder and look around at top of bookshelf?

sorry you are right, i forgot you are an experienced player.
I hope it will turn up out of the blue.
Not so good, that there are so many differences between difficulty levels.

maybe another stupid question, but is the map from the wall of congress hall?

And don't forget the map from capellan's study, then you will have a map in mission 7 (but i think you have it too)

I'm out. While I can appreciate the work involved, these missions have just been annoyance after annoyance so far, and having an objective fail after taking out the priest with the angel statue I'm just done.

I had exactly the same problem. Fortunately, i had a hard save from earlier. Did you use a fire arrow to make the angel fall, didn't you? In my gameplay, that was the problem, i think. After i used a simple broadhead, it worked.
Maybe you should not give up, i find that this is the hardest mission (because of ghosting), the others will be better.

@griswold: on normal, where did you find glass cutter for dome? or how did you push that button?
