I don't think I'm gonna have time to finish Bloodborne's DLC before Elden Ring, but I did manage to smash Ludwig's face in on NG+ at level 90, so I'm feeling pretty good and ready for this.
Review embargo has been lifted and Metacritic currently has it at:
PC - 95%
PS5 - 97%
XBOX-X - 95%

Currently the highest ever rated PC game on open critic.
To think I may have actually been a little underhyped.
I'm trying to resist looking at the reviews too much but it's going to be a long day.
I have 7 minutes of day 1 patch downloading before I can play.
Two minutes of unpacking left for me! I sat here like a chump waiting for it to do something, but it wouldn't start until I restarted Steam, in case you run into the same thing.
I'm a huge souls fan, but I've been feeling the same way. I think it's because the GRR Martin stuff grates a little bit and even the title, Elden Ring, has a generic fantasy feel to it that isn't as intriguing, but it's getting ridiculously good reviews and FromSoft has never led me astray before, so, yeah, also have it downloading now.
I thought I was done with Souls games, but this just sounds too good. Bought and downloading!
I've heard nothing but good things about this game and I feel I should adjust expectations with some ANTI HYPE.
Things I DON'T LIKE:
1. There's no mantling! Weird to see a modern open-world third person game with no mantling. The movement overall feels very much like Dark Souls, just with the addition of a jump button. I loved Dark Souls movement system, but in an open world setting it's feeling limited. Let me mantle and slide down slopes and feel like I'm navigating rough terrain!
2. The steed has BAD HORSEFEEL. You just push in the direction you wanna go and it goes, y'know? No momentum, no weight, no sense that this is a real creature with thoughts of its own. Nothing like the horses in RDR or SOTC, more like the mounts in Far Cry Primal. Less of a horse and more just a visual representation of "player can move faster now". On the other hand this much tighter control probably means that horseback combat is more viable, but I haven't really gotten into that yet.
Despite those issues tho, I got up at 6 on this Saturday morning because I was eager to get back to it. I'm like 3-4 hours in now. Roaming the countryside feels quite Dragon's Dogma-y! Tho it smartly doesn't drain your stamina when out of combat meaning you won't get winded from sprinting 20 meters, which was a big sticking point for me in DD. Stealth is doable, and you can even fire arrows near enemies to distract them. I'm playing as a Bandit, good stealthy class. Exploring this world is a delight and filling me with wanderlust.
This isn't clicking for me. It's a vast open world, but so far it doesn't actually seem to have anything I'd actually want. Equipment is rare, and souls are few so upgrades - and progress - are rare. Base enemies are more dangerous than in souls, and not worth much. Death in every direction, no particular reason to want to go in any direction.
The message system has become solely people writing lewd, intentionally misleading and/or useless comments. That certainly happened in souls, but the signal to noise has become some low that reading messages is essentially never worth it. In souls, messages contained useful information at least some of the time. Here...there's just nothing.
Spent about 8 hours non-stop playing this on the PS5 yesterday, I think this could be my favorite game of all time!
I went for the Bandit Build, there's something great about acting like Garrett even in a modern game. Hope I don't bump into any more monsters...
Yeeeeeah high five to my BANDIT BRO BEST!
I played ~7h of it yesterday. I do like the more linear dungeons and castles that feel more like traditional Souls levels, but there seems to be a complete absense of "unlocking a shortcut back to the bonfire" moments. A shame. No secret walls either?
Steam says I have played 21.2 hours already, but that doesn't seem likely.
Assume it is counting times I left the game running on the menu screen.
Still really loving it. Feels like there is so much to discover and I have just scratched the surface.
I had the same feeling, that I intuitively wanted to mantle up where a step was just too high to jump - but perhaps they thought the steed would give you enough extra height?
The steed does appear to be half goat and a bit spectral so horse realism didn't strike me as such an issue. I prefer it to using a horse in Zelda BOTW (which I have ended up playing at the same time).
Initially I was having fun seeing where I could get away with reaching in the world as you can dodge past dangerous encounters - even when not aiming to get in a fight there are some "holy crap" discoveries resulting in hasty escape - so I like that about the open world part.
Bloodstains are working for me now![]()
Just got through there, and yeah, it brings the magic back. Or, at least the driving call that makes me want to bash through everything.
It has started to gel, though there are some things still working against me. Like the OCD need to stab every chest before opening in case it tries to eat me. Doesn't help when said chest contains a teleporter to hell though.
I saw that there is a group password function in the online options that lets you see other people's messages, bloodstains, summon signs etc with a ring around it so you can see when other people using the password do stuff.
Apparently, you also get notified somehow when one of them fells a great enemy.
Not sure how good that actually is, but might be interesting to try it out just in case it generates a water cooler tale or two.
I'm going to use the password TTLGKRU (same as the Steam group) and if anyone else fancies giving it a try, you can too.
Or not, I'm not your dad.
42 hours in and starting to realize I've only seen half of this world yet.
Done! If you see a "try fingers but hole" it's someone else.
Anyone else having performance issues? Judging by how many dozens of hours a lot of you have played so far, I'm guessing not. I'm getting stuttering, slowdowns, and just bad performance overall. Drivers up to date, running on a 2080 ti.
It’s notoriously bad on PC. It’s not great on PS5 either, with a constantly fluctuating framerate, but at least there’s no majorstutters. According to Digital Foundry the only way to get locked 60fps on any platform is to play the PS4 version on a PS5. In short, weak foe ahead therefore seek Praise the Elden Ring!
I am on the PS4 and its suprisingly solid, a lot smoother than some of the pc videos I have seen. Of course its a bit of a graphical downgrade but it still looks mighty fine.
