    Square Enix Forums?

Does anyone know where the Square Enix Thief forums have gone? The archived Eidos threads were also saved there. It used to be accessible at forums.eu.square-enix.com.

I contacted Square Enix support to check where their forums had gone, and this is their response:

"Unfortunately, we do not support the title Thief anymore and we will be unable to assist further. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Is nobody else worried about this? Over 10 years worth of forum discussion was archived over there, including hundreds of ghost reports. Now it has all suddenly disappeared?

I rarely ever posted over there, but I'm not really surprised. Square Enix didn't make the games and have no real incentive to build or keep a community for old games. House on sand.

I agree with that, but there should still be a way to access and save those archived threads. Wouldn't they at least have given people a warning? I would have saved all the threads and tried to find a way to keep them on my site.

Maybe you can find what you're looking for on archive.org

Somehow I doubt Square even gives much of a thought to Thief as a franchise anymore unless they are setting up a random publisher sale. Even 2014 ultimately became fairly niche despite their hopes of it being mainstream. If it wasn't released early in the console life and didn't have Dishonored 2 to contend with it would have flown right under the radar.

The Thief threads are dead. Every thread is dead. Every thread is dead, Dave.

Yes indeed, it's bizarre. A big game forum vanished in the void and the only person who seems to care is klatremus.
    I bet there's a backup somewhere.

The moderator on the Enix/former Eidos Thief Series Forums is "Peter Smith". I assume he is also a member on ttlg.com. Ask him what's going on.

Peter is in fact here and he was the moderator, so he might have some way to help. His user page here is https://www.ttlg.com/forums/member.php?u=8905.

I private messaged him a couple of days ago. He hasn't posted here since May, so I'm not sure how interested he is. But as a former moderator, I would think he'd want to know.

Soooo, are they relinquishing their copyright hold over the franchise? Great!

Pretty sure he'll get your message. He hasn't posted since May, but he logged on here two days ago.

I can also email him if he doesn't respond within a few days. He's one of the few TTLGers I have met in person.

This is the whole conversation I had with Square Enix:

I don't have my initial inquiry, but it was pretty short, simply asking if they knew where the current and archived Thief forums had gone, as I only got redirected to their gaming page instead.

    Response:
    "Greetings,
We regret to inform you that we do not have any kind of access to any of the information you have requested at this time. Nor do we have any specific information on what other resources where you could obtain that information. However, we would suggest running a simple internet search or discussing this question/issue, as there are many gaming communities which do welcome these types of questions and discussion.
    Thank you,
    Agent Jon
    SQUARE ENIX Customer Support
    "

    My reply:
    "Hello
Thank you for your reply, however, I must admit your response leaves me surprised and highly confused. I am trying to find the message board/forum for Square Enix games. Where else would I get that information than contacting Square Enix support?? You're telling me to do a simple internet search. Well, I did that before first inquiring about this issue, and if I google "square enix forums", the first 7 posts all refer to some derivative of forums.square-enix.com site. Yet, when I click on any of these links, they all redirect me back to https://square-enix-games.com/ where I can't find any message board forum.

If you see my attached picture, I've circled the 7th link in the google search, pointing out that the last post was on Aug 14th of this year, just a few weeks ago. There surely must be many users who are having the same question as myself, as these forums cover a whole array of Square Enix/Eidos games.
Is there a support line for the message boards alone that I could contact?
    Regards
    "

    And then their final answer:
    "Greetings,
Unfortunately, we do not support the title Thief anymore and we will be unable to assist further. We apologize for any inconvenience.
    Best Regards,
    Agent Jon

That helps, but like you said they are heavily incomplete. Part 5 seems complete, and also much of 7. Parts 3, 4 and 6 only have a fraction available.

This is kind of depressing. Their response doesn't really give any indication that they have any idea that there is this awesome community around Thief and forums mean more than just "game support", like it's only good for advertising patch updates.

I remember, several years ago, reading the very first ghost threads. Where the style was invented, and the first ghost reports of Thief 1 and 2 were made. Far from mere descriptions, those early reports were nothing short of works of art. Banner transmigration told as though by keepers, with drama and suspense: "But we're not just going to pass your feet through something, we're going to pass all of you through two things." I read the post where nudging was invented, engine exploits and potion use being debated... I should have archived it all myself at any one of a million points in time. But argh.

Square-Enix is also perfectly happy to allow executables compiled from leaked source code updated for free by fans to be included in commercial distributions of Thief so they can keep profiting from selling it, but I guess writing a single sentence telling Le Corbeau they can release the source code would just cost them too many manmilliseconds of lost earnings potential. Square Enix doesn't care. They have no clue about the importance of those forums. They have probably just been deleted and lost to time. Back when that Dreamcast copy of the Thief source code was put into the wild, it was given to Eidos interactive in hopes they would take the time to get it into a ready state and make it available to the fans. The community manager at the time said it would be passed along to the right people...months went by and nothing. That community manager left, and after contacting the next one they knew nothing of the source code and whoever it was supposed to have been given to, never got it. They lost it....so it was given to them again. I remember following up with several Admins on their forums and every time they would act like it was news to them...even some that I had spoken to previously. They were given the code no less than 3 times and appeared to lose it every time.

They don't care, about the game, the community, the history. Not a wink.

    It's infuriating.

I saw Athalle's links from the webcache last week, but didn't have a chance to look into it. I just saw that most of them were working. Today I finally had a chance to go back in order to download them, only to realize that most of the links are now dead. Ugh!! I managed to salvage some, but sadly only a fraction of the full amount. If I can gather all of them then I would revamp them some and host them on my site, to make sure they never get lost again. The following is a list of the pages I currently have for the 'FMs Ghost/Perfect Thief Results' series:

    Part 1 - Complete (3 pages)
    Part 2 - Complete (3 pages)
    Part 3 - Page 4 only (of 4)
    Part 4 - Pages 1 and 4 (of 4)
    Part 5 - Pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10 (of 10)
    Part 6 - Pages 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 (of 10)
    Part 7 - Pages 1, 5 and 7 (of 12)
Part 8 - Complete, and currently running on TTLG

These I acquired from Athalle's links and from a quick search for cached pages through Google, Yahoo and Bing. If anyone else could help me acquire a more complete set, I would be eternally grateful. I am currently missing 20 pages (with approximately 25 ghost reports per page). Please post the links here or PM me and I will save them instantly.
    Thank you!

lol im not surprised by squeenix being completely incompetent and not knowing what the hell theyve actually shut down - that seems to be their m.o.

im glad the community (or at least klatremus) seems to be making a genuine attempt at preserving this shit though. godspeed
