Thread: Gloomwood just came to my attention and it looks SUPER AMAZING!

While I'm generally a fan of minimal and diegetic UIs, I feel that needing to have the arm on-screen at all times uses up much more screen real estate than a HUD-based visibility gem would.

In other words, what bothers me about the unobtrusive visibility ring is that it's more obtrusive than a simple HUD element would be.

You guys are overreacting. There's a ring slot in the case, so presumably you will unequip the light ring / wear something else.

The ring isn't the problem. Problem may be in how nuanced the degrees of visibility are between 0% unlit and 100% lit. The vid doesn't demo this aspect clearly and we should wait for more info. Game's still a long way from early access.

I smell the expectation that gloomwood will be like thief.
I am very sure that stealth is only a secondary and that it wont be as deep as in OG thief.

The ring might be evidence of that.

I'm not expecting Thief by any means. I'm just excited to see all the design influences and immersive sim elements.

Thief was an exceptionally stealth focused title and had you dance just on the edge of the AI's perception. Hence it needed a fairly granular visibility gem, lots of feedback on the noises you made, and lots of tools to deal with light and sound.

Gloomwood, however, seems to be a far more combat and puzzle focused game where you sneak past the monsters if you don't have enough resources to deal with them.

Are you even listening to yourself? "The visibility UI is fine if you just don't use it!"

Did you not say it yourself, just look at the right hand??

It's not yet known if there'll be other rings for the ring slot, not to mention there's also an eye slot.

The eye slot is most likely for the monacle (zoom tool.)

How are you this bad at reading? I said that the ring apparently does nothing, AND I said that the onscreen hand seems to serve the same purpose as a light gem, AND I implied that having a huge hand constantly onscreen is, as Brethren put it, weird and distracting.

From the looks of it, you can put away your hand entirely (at 2:44 and 4:23).

Really wish they weren't going the Early Access route. I'll wait for the final product.

I get how there have been plenty of bad examples and bad experiences of games going Early Access, but if handled well, not only can it work, it may be the only way to get the game you really want. And there are examples of Early Access working really well, like Supergiant's handling of Hades.

Gloomwood appears to be a complex and ambitious immersive sim, despite the retro appearances. I can see the funding and feedback provided by Early Access really helping a small independent developer properly complete such a game.

From what I've seen of New Blood, I have some faith they'll handle it well. But that is faith, not reason, so I guess we'll see.

Gloomwood is hitting Early Access in TWO DAYS! Who else is FREAKING OUT?

Yeah I'm not too keen on EA for anything with a story either, buuuuut I'm pretty sure I'm picking it up day one.

Do we know how much of the game will be ready in the Early Access?

I'm generally not a fan of playing unfinished games in Early Access, but... well, it's Gloomwood.

Found an answer to my own question on their Steam forums:

Fishery, caves, cliffs, lighthouse. It's the first few hours of the game

So, the Early Access will initially be more like a long demo rather than an unpolished entire game.

My first thought was game is evolved around forest areas plagued with mysterious Gloom.

It's interesting to compare Gloomwood's development with that of Underworld Ascendant. Small team, small budget, stylized graphics, Looking Glass inspired. Yet where UA fumbled and face-planted, this seems to be shaping up quite well. I guess it goes to show how important it is to have a clear vision and well-defined goals. Probably more competent coders too.
