You can view the changelog HERE.

We are happy to release our updated version of The Scarlet Cascabel. This was originally released as an entry in the Thief: The Dark Project 20th Anniversary Contest. Due to the contest time constraints, it wasn't as polished and complete as we would have liked, and there were several significant detractions to gameplay that we wished to address and remedy. This also gave us the opportunity to include a great deal of new content and what we hope is improved gameplay.

Thank you to everyone who played our first release, and for your invaluable feedback. Although no fan mission is ever perfect, the time you took to play our mission and tell us about your experiences was helpful and appreciated. We hope you'll enjoy the updated version, and we're excited to hear your thoughts and comments!

We chose to adhere to the original contest rules and included only T1/TG stock and stock-derived assets. This was a great learning experience for both of us, and we enjoyed finding creative solutions.

DO NOT PLAY WITH MODS INSTALLED! Playing this mission with mods installed may make it extremely difficult to navigate parts of the mission.

To disable mods, do the following:

AngelLoader: In the Edit FM tab on the top right, check the box labeled "Disable all mods".
NewDarkLoader: Right click on the mission name, and select Edit FM. In the 'Disabled Mods' field, type in an asterisk: *
FM Sel: Right click on the mission name, and select Edit. In the 'Mod Path Excludes' field, type in an asterisk: *

    Subtitles:

Subtitles are turned off by default. If you wish to have subtitles, do the following:

    1. Install the mission through whichever loader you use.
    2. Go into the mission folder, which should be something like: Thief\FMs\TSCv2
    3. Open the FM.cfg file and remove the semi-colon from this line:

    ;enable subtitles

If you have any questions or problems, please feel free to ask here or send us a PM.

If you are interested in viewing the original contest release version, you will find it HERE.

A huge thank you to our testers: marbleman, DarkMax, Mat99, Nickie, Nightwalker, ffox, Yandros, Fortuni, Apiai, John9818a, and to our translators: Apiai, michael a, Mira S, Schelfia, blackmarketbertha, Taffy.

A special thanks to Yandros for all his technical help and advice, and to skacky for his hard work in creating and organizing this contest.

Wonderful! Having been quite harsh toward V1 of this deserved contest-winner on account of technical issues, I'm excited to try a definitive edition that wasn't constrained by a hard deadline. The changelog appears to address all of my concerns. I expect to see the unique style and talent of its two authors shine through, brighter than it did in the original.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to improve what was already an instant classic!

Thank the taffer gods and praise the builders!!!

    One potential issue though:
I believe I found all three ("trio") jade idols (one near start, one by blocked mine entrance, one by drowned guy) but the optional objective didn't check off. They all looked the same in inventory and were worth 15 each.

Playing on expert and re-ran TFix 1.27 on an existing TG install before installing mission just to make sure all was up to date, also disabled mods in AngelLoader the suggested way, everything else seems fine so far.

Thanks fortuni, I discovered they aren't the jade idols, just gems I think and there are more than three.

Terrific work, thanks Pukey & Tannar - and all involved in the updated version.

Just played mission 1 and wonderful, really enjoyed it - definitely kept me immersed with all the new elements. I liked the old version but I think I prefer this one. Found the idols and all secrets but finished 250 or so short on loot. Realised I was too eager to KO Lash as I later noted there seemed to be a side task in his room . I also ended up with some letters in inventory that probably had a purpose ?

Going back to look again in mission 1 but will have to gather my energy before trying out the epic mission 2

Thanks everyone! We're glad you're enjoying it.

@DirkBogan - the criticism was welcome, and helped us address some of the issues that needed attention. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the new version.

@Sagittal - let us know if you need any hints

@Esme, glad you liked the first one, and hope you'll like the new one too!

@DarkMax, @Fortuni, and @Apiai, thanks for your encouragement, and for all your hard work helping us get the new release out!

    Some very rewarding alterations!

In Mission 1, Expert is there anything to do with the lucky coin?

Same qustion too about Poor Wee Markus.

And is the attic room in the tavern, the one with the cupboard containing a revolving music box and a drawer that opens, there for anything other than atmosphere?

    Thanks.

    @Marbrien:

For the Lucky Coin, read the plaque on the village well.

    For Poor Wee Markus:
Hint: Read the "Missing" notice on the tavern bulletin board.
Spoiler: Go to Captain Dugall's house, on the path out of town to the southeast over the bridge next to the chapel, and drop his bones on the table.

    For the attic room:
Hint: Did you find anything else in that room?
Spoiler: Use the holy water on the bones.

    Thanks for the pointers.

I think I missed a couple of optional objectives by knocking people out.

I knocked out Lash before discovering the bottle in his room will take the oblivion potion. When I used the potion on the bottle, the unconscious Lash made a wretching sound, but no text or optional objective appeared.

Also, by the time I put Poor Wee Markus on the guard captain's table, I had already knocked out the captain. There was a brief text message on screen, too brief to read, but no optional objective appeared and no reward appeared in the room.

Also, I have found several secrets in mission 1 but my Stats screen when I finish the mission does not contain a secrets count. Is that how it is supposed to be?

    Thanks.

    Thank you, Lord Soth!

@Marbrien - that's funny about Lash making the wretching noises, even though he was knocked out (we missed that). That is one of three hidden optional quests inside mission 1. There are no direct rewards/loot for the optional quests.. just that sense of satisfaction having done a good deed, plus having figured out these little puzzles ; ) As for the hidden optional quest putting Markus's bones on the table, it doesn't matter whether or not the captain is conscious, so the text you missed says "Daring Dwarf Discovery Bonus".

As for secrets, Thief 1 didn't have secrets built into the engine (that came along after T2), so you won't see these statistics showing at the end of of your mission. We added them for fun. There are a total of 6 secrets, and you will get a special notification in-game if you can find them all.

The map is in a locker inside the mill in the forest.

    Also, welcome to the forum!

Thank you for your hard work! It was sincere joy to play through the FM once again.
Really loving the changes, Jim Jim side-quest was hilarious and one of my favorite parts.
Overall, both missions are astounding with the details and overall atmosphere is marvelous. The winter building is certainly something to remember!

Currently, I need help with the chess pieces hunting. I've found almost all pieces, except one pawn, the most right one (either #8 or #1). Would appreciate atleast a tiny clue on whereabouts.

Why? It doesn't actually look like improvement...

Well done Pukey Brunster and Tannar. I’m playing Mission 1 on normal difficulty and think it’s excellent and fiendishly constructed. After each minor achievement, with hindsight I think Ah! The clues were there all along. Lots of imaginative stuff, some which I no doubt missed in last year’s version when I was just trying to get to the other end so I'm not sure which are new additions. This time I did more and a couple of times stood in wonderment for longer than was healthy. Unfortunately the beings concerned didn’t reciprocate my appreciation but my sense of achievement in getting into the Mill was quite something. (I do know that last year I got in a window). I haven't achieved all optional quests/secrets, but I followed up Marbrien’s post and delivered Poor Wee Markus and also managed to get an unconscious Mr Lash to burp several times. So all good. I later found Garrett can drink from the bottle in his room but as I'd already used the Oblivion potion I wasn't able to experiment, and having swallowed the FairyFly stuff earlier it seemed best not to find out. I’m 257 short on loot and I think I’ve peaked.

But any hint on where to look for a Lucky Penny would be appreciated. As would how to get those Passion, Charm and Hair Growth potions. (For a friend. Willing to pay.)

An early post mentioning Mister Jim Jim in Mission 2 is intriguing (I had wondered if that might get developed) but like some others I need to build my strength before venturing on.

Very glad you're enjoying the update! For the chess pieces, did you read the book on the chair by the chessboard? That has clues for each one. But here are two hints:

If it's Pawn 1: Check the Observatory carefully.
If it's Pawn 8: Check the second floor of the Gallery.

It wasn't fair that AI could see the player from a distance through a window when the player didn't even know the AI was there. It was a detraction from gameplay having to reload all the time because of being spotted by AI you couldn't see.
