Announcing Thief 2: The Metal Age 20th Anniversary Contest - Mar 23-27, 2020

March 23, 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of Thief 2: The Metal Age’s release. Garrett's epic quest to stop a madman bent on destroying all living things in The City began on this day two decades ago.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of this masterful sequel, a contest was held here on TTLG where Fan Mission builders had one year to build one or more missions in the style of the original game and using mostly stock assets. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the original deadline was relaxed by a few days to give those struggling to meet it a little extra time. We have 8 stellar missions being released today, with several more expected in the next four days (likely 3 more, barring any surprise entries).

Brethren graciously offered to host all the missions in one page, which you can access here: www.southquarter.com/tma20ac/

He has also posted a mirror on Google Drive, here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...k6pbQwMV2p73XP

You can find the individual mission threads below. Please keep all comments in this thread about the contest at a higher level, and post mission-specific questions and comments in the mission threads.

The Builder's Paradise by Children of Endeavour
Feast of Pilgrims by Random_Taffer & marbleman
    Fierce Competition by Jayrude
Into The Odd by Croissantine & Die Fugger
    My Favorite Year by Morendrum
The Pursuance of an Inscrutable Reciprocity by GORT
    Show Off by Grandmauden
    Ten Little Taffers by Balboa
Time For Change by Lord Taffer
    Troubling Transitions by Psych0sis
Where the Unknown Lurks by Skejven

Before playing these missions, please take the following into account:

    • If you are using Darkloader, please update to NewDarkloader, AngelLoader or FMSel. Darkloader is outdated, unsupported and doesn’t work correctly with some NewDark missions.
    • Remember that ALL these missions are for THIEF 2. As such, do not load them with Thief 1/GOLD!
    • It is REQUIRED that you update to T2Fix 1.27b or later. Some of the missions REQUIRE the latest versions of NewDark to function properly.
    • Several of these missions push the limits of even NewDark. Please check under Options > Audio and set your Audio Channels to the max of 48, and enable Hardware Acceleration, if you encounter audio problems with a mission.
    • It is highly recommended you disable all the optional features offered by T2Fix.
    • It is highly recommended you do not use the Enhancement Pack and/or any HD texture packs either.

Seeing as this is a contest, you taffers get to vote for your favorite mission. The voting period starts on Saturday, Mar 28 and will last until June 28, 2020. Mission voting is presented as 3 categories worth 10 points each — Atmosphere, Gameplay and Story - or a general score of 30 without categories. Voters can choose either system to score missions. Be advised that judges may deduct up to 5 points per submission if contest rules were broken.

You can now vote here: https://www.ttlg.com/polls/T2Anniversary

You can view the original thread announcing the contest one year ago HERE.

In most cases, the anonymous authors’ identities will be unveiled after the voting period ends and voters’ comments will be posted for every mission. The author whose mission received the best score shall obtain the prestigious title of Master Builder 2020 and everyone shall bow down to them (unless you’re a Pagan, in which case you may throw rotten apples at them).

Yandros would personally like to thank skacky for helping him out with the organization, Brethren for hosting all the missions on South Quarter as well as Al_B for the voting forms. Yandros and skacky would also like to express their gratitude to everyone who made a mission for this contest, whether they managed to finish in time or not. You are the reason why Thief lives on despite being 20+ years old!

Important: GORT's mission will not be available on the download pages for an hour or two. Play one of the others first instead. First person who comments about it because they didn't read this post gets a flogging!

    GORT's mission is now available.

Let me offer a huge thank you to all mission authors and to the contest organizers!

I'm not sure how to fully express it, but I really appreciate all the time and effort each of you have put into this whole endeavor.

I really needed something like this right now. Thank you.

Thief Guild directory updated, too. I would be more satisfied with more screenshots or covers, though

    https://www.thiefguild.com/fanmissions/?series=16748

@authors, feel free to submit covers to me. You can submit background pictures, too.

    @all, please submit screenshots, too.

Similarly to TDP20AC contest, you are able to rate the missions on Thief Guild portal while the contest is running. However, you will not be able to see other ppl ratings while the official voting is running. I wrote some additional code server side to achieve this. Thanks to this, Thief Guild portal will not affect the official voting. You can still rate missions privately - no need to come back to it after the contest is closed.

Fan-taffing-tastic. THANK YOU everyone - organisers, hosts and, of course, all you authors, testers and tea makers. The world feels pretty bleak and scary right now, and this competition is the light in the dark for me. Going to lose myself in some sneaky thieving and perhaps a little noggin boshing

Great news, Everyone, this is superb! Thanks so much to all involved for all your hard work.

I am going to have to ration my time, I can see it.

....... getting straight in with Feast of Pilgrims!

So, we can expect 11 missions overall related to this contest?

Any more, "off the record" type or dropped out missions in the near future? Don't get me wrong, even 10 overall would be great, but this is a crucial question because of the forced home office weeks (months?). The longer we can stay entertained, the better.

    Thank you!

I know that Jarlfrank and Nicked are going to be releasing their missions soon too. Don’t know if there are others

I'm planning to release after the voting period. This gives me enough time to implement areas I had to cut when I aimed for the contest deadline, and proper bugtesting and polishing.

Yes, those two I know of and what I hear about Nicked's mission is that it is a doozy. I don't know of any other FMs on the horizon but that doesn't mean there aren't any out there about to be released.

What about those who missed the deadline? There were a bunch more on your list that were either unknown or dropped out

I never heard from Patriarch of Bub, eepcat, SneakyGuy101 or Master of Dromed. They could appear at any time with a submission, but they never replied to my PMs. I did hear from redleaf and Jumping Taffer and both said they would not make the deadline, nor did they indicate an ETA.

I have received new screenshots to share from the author who was previously anonymous. They have given me their name as Morendrum, and the mission is titled "My Favorite Year". They expect to finish and release by the extended deadline.
