TMA20AC Mission — Where the Unknown Lurks (Mar 24, 2020)

This thread is for any discussion or questions related to the mission Where the Unknown Lurks by Skejven.
You can download the mission HERE or HERE.
    The contest thread is HERE.

Please give clues instead of outright solutions when helping others and use the spoiler tag when you do this.

Remember that this mission, and by extension every mission made for the contest, is for THIEF 2. As such, do not load it with Thief 1/GOLD! It is highly recommended you do not use the Enhancement Pack and/or HD texture packs to play this mission. It is also recommended you uncheck all optional features T2Fix comes with if you update to the latest version of the full executable.

What a fabulous FM! Atmospheric, looks beautiful, plays like good old Thief ... but with some twists!

I want a house like that! Together with the underground Hammerite church! Didn't see that one coming to be honest, I thought it's gonna be one of those short and sweet FMs and I'll finish it tonight. Also, awesome Planescape:Torment reference!

Time to polish my lock picks, dust off the blackjack, pickup a few rope arrows and give the boots a good spit shine. No point in waiting. It's time to begin.

Cute mission . Short and sweet, very cool.

Unless you find the (admittedly easy as hell to do so) Hammerite Temple stuffs. This area is like 3x the play area of everything else but optional for... Reasons, I guess? Would have been really cool to have this be the main meat of the mission and have the lore of it expanded upon. As it is, its a really cool side area and probably like 500x better than the main areas, if I'm being frank :P

I really quite liked this one, I liked the architecture of the castle. I'll always give props to people Hiding things behind bannisters, if only because when I first played through Thief those were the only secrets I could find.

I enjoyed the optional quest, especially how I just expected you to go down and get a bunch of loot then leave, and that it was likely 2/3rds of the level entirely, which is a bit of an odd choice admittedly.

This was a solid first level to play in this contest.

    Mine, too.

I was all about to leave this "small" mission when I thought it was done but then I realized that there must have been much more loot hidden. So as a master thief I restarted, loaded back and then finally discovered the underworld. That was really unexpected!

Finished playing hard with 3514/3944 loot.

BTW did anybody else transform the guards into rats?

I've picked up all of the glowing body parts except for the leg. IDK if it bugs out from quicksaving/quickloading, but I can't find it wandering around anywhere. If it's in a secret place, I just want a hint.

Big face in a wall will know the answer

I had the same problem with the leg, earlier I roped up on top of those beams thinking there might be something up there, not sure I would've found it without the hint.

Really enjoyed this & almost missed the underground section too. I liked that the zombies can't get you after turning them into rats. First entry I've played and a great way to begin, many thanks to its builder!

If you think you're done with the mission then maybe this lil fun fact about it will interest you
As a fan of mesoamerica I always wanted to make an FM inspired by mayas, incas, aztecs, toltecs etc. So before the hammerite complex idea was born this was meant to be the "main optional" area.
Maya temples, buildings, even a court for the meso ballgame . Then I realized I probably won't be able to make this a fun area using only stock assets, and also the layout of whole place was pretty meh and not planned at all. So in the end I scrapped it. Here are some screenshots in dromed https://imgur.com/a/KxAyLzb

I remember when you showed me that, it was very cool so it's a shame it had to be scrapped.

I think the location where you find the leg should have been lit more. I had to check this thread for hints to find it, and even then I wandered around for a while trying to find a face in the wall somewhere, which was hard to find due to the lack of lighting in that area.

I had the same problem. I found out that this was caused by firefox browser I usually use. Try to download with microsoft standard internet explorer and it will work.

And then I wish you happy hours with this nice mission,
    greetings, urumo

I for one can't find the secret underground Could it be because I'm playing on Normal?

There is a riddle to be solved in the highest point in the castle. You will need a scroll with instructions in order to solve it, but it's very easy to find.

Really nice looking mission, plus the secret that's 2/3 of the mission for some reason was a pleasant surprise. I think the presence of the Mechanists was a bit odd as the area would have worked just as well as a straight undead affair, but that's a minor complaint. A tad more development on the pagan front might also have helped, but otherwise it was a good mission and fun to play.

No idea tbh. I use FMsel but I know that for a few people with AngelLoader this mission worked just fine.

I tend to skip readables that are longer than one page, my mistake.

This is one of the stronger contest missions with a lovely level design, congrats

    Beautiful mission, Skejven!

No speedbrains allowed, huh? Good thing that doesn't pertain to me...
