PS5 only. So it doesn't really matter to me: I still won't play the game. I expect that, as usual, playing with a controller will be the only way to play the new Demon Souls ? If so, that's another reason I won't play. Too bad.

Better news. Or rather: better rumors.
It has been rumored that Blood Borne will be ported to PC.
If that's true, I will certainly play BB.
As long as you can play with Mouse and Keyboard.

But for those that plan to buy a PS5: congratulations, I hope you will enjoy Demon Souls. If you hadn't played it on a PS3 already.

I bought a PS4 for Bloodborne and am glad I did because I now have the choice of sofa gaming with a big-ass TV when wife and kids are sleep. Good that it's coming to PC though.
I was thinking I'd hold back on the PS5 to see if there were any teething issues, or even to wait for the inevitable pro / bigger SSD version to come later on, but the Demon's Souls reveal nearly made me lose my shit, so now I'm not sure I can wait.

I was really surprised to see the announcement this morning, and thrilled, now that I will finally get a chance to play it. I've owned all of the PlayStation consoles apart from the PS3 -- hence why I haven't played Demon Souls yet -- and intend to pick up the PS5, although as I upgraded from the PS4 to the pro version early last year, I will probably hold off until a few months or so after launch.

Hopefully, they've updated some of the gameplay, because Demon's doesn't have the same impact it once did when compared to its more fleshed out successors.

Fingers crossed for rhythm QTEs and romance sub quests too.

Demon's Souls is great as is, please don't change it (but I guess some updated visuals would be OK).

I'm playing it right now and it doesn't feel very dated to me gameplay-wise. But then again I've played so many of these games now that I probably can't judge this objectively any more.

    Needs a guitar section too.

I played it a bit after finishing up Dark Souls, which made it feel more like a beta for everything that came after, rather than a complete standalone game in its own right.

It's like everything Demon's did, Dark does better, and has more of it.

There is a bit of that Seinfeld is Unfunny trope going on, and Dark Souls is undoubtedly more polished, but, on the other hand, I feel like the bosses and enemies are sufficiently varied and unique to keep things fresh. The environments and level design are superb and the encounters feel laid out more in a way that coach out that careful, observant, resourceful play that the series best shines at whereas Dark Souls and especially the sequels feel more like they cater to difficulty and player skill.

I also played Demon's after Dark and thought it held up just fine. Only thing that felt limited gameplay-wise was how each area was its separate thing, instead of being all interconnected like Dark.

As for the trailer... I don't know man. All that colorful lighting and the tweaks in the monster designs makes it look a lot more like generic fantasy. Feels like I'm watching a Heartstone trailer or something.

    Comparison against the original:

Yeah, the Mega Man style level select vs Castlevania style interconnected world was one of the first things that stuck out for me, as I wrote in the garbage thread:

Incidentally, I've been getting into Demon's Souls again (I've only played it a bit before), and so far I like it nearly as much as Dark Souls. I think I still prefer the Castlevania / Zelda style level design, as it gives the place more of a sense of a continuous world, but the Mega Man style level structure kind of makes the world feel like a bigger place. It also helps that the worlds you teleport into do have some continuity and a unified theme. Other than that, it feels very From in all its aspects and I'm seeing lots of parallels from the old King's Field games as well as their newer ones. Latria was a surprise, though -- did not expect to see those fellas.

I wouldn't go THAT far, but the more sepiatoned colors of the original do fit the mood of the game better.

Yeah, my memories of Demon's Souls are of an ashy, sepia sadness when I kept DYING ALL THE FUCKING TIME played it. I love Bluepoint, and their work is excellent, but I do have to wonder what's up with the colour injection - a bunch of the original scenes earn more otherworldly gravitas just through the palette being used.

If they'd release Demon's Souls on PC, you could use ReShade to change the colors to whatever you want. I normally use Reshade to increase the vibrance (make games more colorful). But you can also reduce the vibrance if you want. I think there's even a shader that changes the colors to more sepia-tones.

They're overcompensating for the whole notion of reality being brown that was so prevalent during the PS3 era.

Now they're going for EVERYTHING IS A BILLION SHADES OF EVERYTHING! WOOOH! IT'S LITERALLY A RAINBOW!

You can cut off the unicorn boss's tail to get a rainbow princess greatsword apparently.

It doesn't look that much more colourful to me. It looks like basically like what I remember Demon's Souls looking like, but sharper.

Wow. We've come so far that people are nostalgic for the Age of Brown.

I mean, I was there, too. It was very, very brown. And sepia is close to brown on the color wheel.

Edit: Renzatic got there first. Next up, Bloom nostalgia!

    Fuck bloom.

What I miss is fog. I remember playing World of Warcraft, and every area was foggy. You could see a few dozen, maybe a 100 meters far. All the rest was fog. Everywhere. It was awesome. The world seemed huge. You could literally not even see how large all areas were. And there were a lot of areas. It added a lot of mystery to the world.

Later, when videocards became faster, and we had more memory in our systems, you could configure the "view distance". And suddenly there was no fog anymore. You could see mountains in the distance in stead. Not good. Not an upgrade. I think fog was much better.

Actually I might have falled in love with fog before WoW. I think Morrowind was all fog too. Maybe that's why Morrowind was better than Skyrim: Morrowind had more fog !

I'm art style agnostic. The Gears age of grey and brown was overkill because every single game went that direction when they didn't need to. Depending on the game, though, it's a perfectly valid artistic direction. GoW 1 actually still looks good today because its art wasn't made to conform to some sort of zeitgeist, it just went with what was artistically sensible for a ruined and ravaged planet. The same thought process also lends an earthy note to Demon's Souls while at the same time makes everything feel foreign -- that's what an effective art style can do.

The problem with all those other games was the grey and brown overload didn't actively contribute to the atmosphere; in fact, most of the time it just amplified how generic the art design was.

Fair point. Demon's Souls certainly did have a distinct art design. At one point I wondered why every single wall looked slick and wet, but attributed it to the tech of the era.

Why not for PC? Meh. Iīm not really interested in the PS5 as long as Sony doesnīt offer downward compability to PS1-PS3. In fact, things like this make consoles not really appealing to me.

Still, Demonīs Souls emulation should be possible on current PCs.

It is possible. I got it running on my PC. It works. Look for RPCS3.

I've played only a few minutes. I dislike playing with a controller. And I suck at using a controller. I've got no wish to learn or practice. And just like on consoles, with the RPCS3 emulator you are forced to play with a controller. So no Demon Souls for me for the moment. But if you don't mind using a controller, give it a try with RPCS3.
