    MS Flight Simulator 2020

ok yeah enough faffing around this should have its own thread

MS Flight Simulator 2020 is OUT TODAY!

    Couple things:

-Cheapest way to take to the skies: get a month of XBox Game Pass for PC for 1€.

-The installer only installs the base files and you have to download other 90GB of content within the game. While this is happening there's background music autoplaying and it's annoying as shit if you wanna do anything else on the computer while this is happening. You can mute it by opening Windows Volume Mixer and muting the application.

I think I'll have to join the Game Pass for a month to check out some of my favourite places in Switzerland and to see how well the algorithms have done. I don't think I'd ever play much of this, but it's something I could imagine dabbling in occasionally.

I wonder if this thing will install to a mapped network drive. I don't have enough free space left on my SSD.

EDIT: The answer is no. Looks like I'll need another internal drive if I want to try this. Maybe I'll wait for you guys to tell me how good it is.

There are already a boatload of preview version videos. Every flight simmer that has a channel and got a preview version is sold on it, as far as I can tell universally, if that tells you anything.

I have watched certain videos that were so photo realistic (from sufficient distance), that I had to actually scan the scene to find a single unambiguous artifact to show that it was CG, and it took me a bit of time to do it. I think that alone defines the start of a new era. (I remember the first screenshot of a scene that for a brief second I took as photo real, which also defined a new era for me, and that was Gothic 2. Okay, I'm getting distracted now, sorry.)

Anyway, I'm downloading it now. The wifi I use has a bit of ebb and flow to it where I am, which just means 90 GB is going to take like 15 hours all told, not counting times I stop the download for different reasons. So it may be the weekend until I can get into it and report anything

I expect the servers will be hammered this weekend, so I'll wait a week or two until I check it out.

My download just finished and I tried to do the first tutorial. You're just supposed to look around and learn the camera controls but at one point it just got stuck. Kept telling me to click right stick to recenter the camera. I do, and nothing happens. Go into settings to switch to keyboard controls, and it's still displaying gamepad prompts in-game. Unplug my gamepad, and the game crashes.

Gotta say, after that long-ass installation where you had to go into the windows volume settings to turn off the music because they couldn't even be arsed to include a mute-button... this is not off to a very impressive start.

Went through the tutorials this morning and flew over my home city in the afternoon.

Considering Vaasa is just a flat, smeared texture in Google Earth, I really wasn't expecting much from it's depiction here, but I am IMPRESSED! It looks great! From a distance. If you actually get closer the details are off, but hey, at least all the houses are the right general locations and shapes!

How about the trees? I've heard that the algorithm can be somewhat too eager to put trees everywhere. Does Vaasa look more verdant than it ought to?

Oh yes definitely! In fact it turned our whole town square into a big lawn. :P

Oh, I got it now -- it's MS Flight as in it will try to make you flee from MS.

    Thanks for the video.

I compared your video to Google Earth and Bing maps. I can see what you mean about the trees, there are too many and they all look like pines. But it also seemed to put a green filter on just about everything ground level. Some of the roads are green, car parks are green, even the coal pit at the power plant has a little green tint that makes it look almost like water. It did a good job of recognizing buildings and removing their shadows from the imagery, but I noticed that it only picked up only 1 out of 5 chimneys at the power plant.

Now I'm really curious to see how well it handles terrain height.

What is it with you and transportation anyway?

Also, are you doing requests? Could you do a fly-by of my town?

35 GB down and only 55 to go...

It's a drag when you leave it to download overnight and it stops at some random point. You lose all the time from that point.

I want to try it out, but I dunno if I want to spend $60 for it.

Think I'll just live vicariously through you bunch.

As Henke mentioned above, it's included in the Xbox game pass for PC that costs 1 dollar a month to try out.

You know, one day I should really consider getting around to learning how to read.

There's a business model for you, henke: getting the TTLG whales to pay you a small fee for a scenic flyby of their home town. You get a bonus if you discover one of those weird outcomes of the algorithm they used to translate a 2D satellite image into 3D: submerged bridges, immensely high spires, plane-shaped buildings. I'm sure you've always wanted to become a part of the virtual tourism industry!

At this point you might as well let it claim you, man. It's like the gold standard for 'where Renz is from around'.
