Esse's Custom Texture Repository For FMs

    Greetings, TTLG,

After sitting on the sidelines for many years, I've decided to make a go of contributing to the FM and modding communities for this game. While I try to figure out Dromed, I've decided to toss out some custom textures in the meantime. While these are primarily meant for fan missions, you are more than welcome to mod them into your base games if you know how. They are primarily meant for Thief 1 and 2 and have been made with those games in mind; comments and critiques are welcomed and appreciated. It's my first time making textures for Thief, so I appreciate any pointing out of things that need fixing.

I don't require any attribution, but if you'd like to drop a note about what you've done with them, I'd love to see your work! My textures are also free to edit and change as you see fit. Add special effects, darken/lighten them, give them a recolour, or do anything else to make them fit your needs.

    =====================================

    PAINTING PACK #1

A series of paintings - some edited more than others - to decorate walls, manors, museums, and other buildings with. Seven .gif files, each at Dromed-friendly sizes (256x128, 128x256, and 256x256) are included in this pack. It's 303.63 KB total in size, and comes with 11 files. Some of the paintings didn't take too well to the resizing process, while others look much better. I've included even the less-successful attempts just in case you can do something with them still.

    PAINTING PACK #2

A second series of paintings for your FMs, as well as three new tapestries and three new banners. Sizes are 256x256, 256x128 and 128x256. This pack has a lot of paintings with female subjects in it, so I'll make sure to have more male subjects in the next pack. Thankfully, I think the art turned out much better this time around with some of the resizing than in the last pack. The archive's 538.48 KB in size and has 15 files.

PAINTING PACK 3 (+ Bonus Dewdrop's Dresses Pack)

A third series of paintings for your FMs. It mostly contains paintings edited for colour and contrast, but has three monk portraits edited to look like Hammerites. For missions with exotic fauna or located in places like hunting lodges, paintings of beasts both modern and ancient (mostly ancient) are another feature of this pack. Please note that some of these paintings include animals hunting and eating one another, so if you're sensitive to that kind of content, you may want to take a pass on this one. I can send you non-hunting scenes in another file if you'd still like the pack. Just PM me for details.

There's also a little bonus with this pack: Dewdrop's Dresses. It contains a baker's dozen of dresses for the Dewdrop doll model, and an alternate face with button eyes and a neutral expression. Various recolours of her dried-hay hair have been also been included, simulating other plants that might be dried for decoration. There are also three new heraldry-/family crest-inspired banners for you to use in the main Painting Pack section. This file and the main pack total a whopping 70 files, with a total file size of 4.34 MB. Image sizes include 64x64 and 128x64 for the Dewdrop items, and 256x256, 512x256, and 256x512 for the Painting Pack items.

    PAINTING PACK 4

I'm working on a somewhat larger texture project right now, but I don't want this thread to go inactive. To combat this, I decided to put some more paintings up for people to download until I have this next project done. It has 25 files of either 256x512 or 256x512 pixels, all of which are saved as .GIFs. It's 2.22 MB in size, so not as big as some of the previous files have been. Can't say that'll be the same for this next project I'm working on....

    TAPESTRY & BEDDING PACK #1

This is a pack of over thirty new custom textures for objects. Ten are bedding replacements for fancy/noble's beds (bed.GIF, BEDCOVER.GIF, and bedh.gif), ten are tapestries (for replacing banners and the BANSTAR textures), and ten are some extra painting textures thrown in for fun. There's some Hammerite-themed material in here, and a few things that skew towards the Pagan aesthetic. One bedding replacement looks like it's made out of moss, so I thought that'd be something to keep in, as an example. A preview image will come soon that shows all these textures. The file is in .ZIP format, and is 3.87 MB in size.

    THIEF: DS DERIVATIVE GUARD PACK

The other textures in the pack should work as expected. If they don't, please post here and let me know.

This 2.02 MB file contains 30 .PNG textures based off of/inspired by the Thief: Deadly Shadows City Watch. It has eight guard replacement textures with a DS-inspired uniform (4 bowmen, 4 swordsmen), four long banners with torn variants, four short banners/tapestries with support bases and torn variants, and two fancy bed replacers. If you'd like, you can edit this (and any of my other textures I've put up here) as needed to fit your Dromed needs.

    PAGAN RECOLOURS PACK #1

A 1.56 MB file featuring 14 recolours for the pagan01.GIF (PaganMaleWhite) and pagWom01.GIF (PaganWoman) models in Dromed. There are two variants of the original pagan01 and pagWom1 files with new outfits, and then a blond, redhead, and elderly male and female Pagan for you to use. I'll be making a second pack with darker-skinned Pagans in the future, as I couldn't get the skin colours to look realistic with any darker-skinned Pagans this time.

    PAGAN RECOLOURS PACK #2

A 1.47 MB file pack that features 13 recolours for the pagan02.GIF (PaganMaleBlack) and the PagWom01.GIF (PaganWoman) models in Dromed. The lack of a darker-skinned female model for the Pagans meant experimenting and playing around with the base assets was needed, so any critique on the recolouring is appreciated. There are two outfit variants for each male and female model, and include a wavy-haired, an afro-haired, and an elderly texture.

    TAPESTRY PACK #2

A 1.24 MB file that features Pagan-themed tapestries for all your Dromed needs. Some are public-domain paintings and textures, while some of the spookier-looking ones were generated using the Craiyon AI drawing tool. There are no bedding textures in this one, but nothing's stopping you from doing your own modding to turn these into beds for your missions. Six textures have been provided in total, and all having match torn versions and support poles.

PAGAN CHILD RECOLOURS PACK - DAUGHTERS

A 1.20 MB file that has twelve recolours for the PagChi01.GIF texture, which is of the little Pagan girl model from T2's Trail of Blood. These files are for female Pagan children, but I suppose you could use them for androgynous figures or long-haired boys. This project is being redone after the files were lost, and I have to mess with the scale of the male Pagan model to make it fit a child texture, so male children will be in a separate pack.

    **NEW: TAPESTRY PACK #3

A small six-pack of miscellaneous tapestries for you to use in Dromed and Thief missions. The size is 1.36 MB large, and the banner texture for these images was generated by Craiyon.AI. I couldn't find a good banner texture elsewhere for what I wanted these to look like. There is a hunting scene in here, so if you're uncomfortable with that, PM me and I'll send you a file with the texture removed.

**NEW: PAGAN CHILD RECOLOURS PACK - SONS

A 1.29 MB pack of twelve files that contains recolours for the Pagan01 and Pagan02 textures. There is no model for a boy-child Pagan, so the best I could do was make something for the adult male Pagans that you can shrink to look like a child. Darker-skinned textures replace Pagan02, and lighter-skinned textures replace Pagan01.

This 1.80 MB file contains 31 .PNG textures based off of/inspired by the Thief: Deadly Shadows Hammerites. It has four temple guard replacement textures with a DS-inspired uniform, four priests from Dromed Deluxe that have been tweaked/given new faces, two default Hammerite temple guards with darker complexions, four long banners with torn variants, four short banners/tapestries with support bases and torn variants, four bed replacers (two with the Hammer logo, two plain), and a health shield replacer. The short banner texture was generated by Craiyon.AI.

RUINED RELIEF ANCIENT WALL TEXTURE PACK (+ Bonus Portraits)

This pack contains 34 files (including those of the bonus paintings) and is a total size of 9.60 MB. The main part of the pack consists of 16 tiling, interchangeable textures that portray three different animal reliefs: sirrush (dragon), auroch (cow), and sheep/goat/unidentifiable livestock animal. (It might even work for a burrick.) 8 are in a cement brown colour, and 8 are a dark blue-gray. A dividing brick texture has been provided for each recolour if you want to put some space between the reliefs. Each texture is 512x512 and is in the .PNG format.

The second part of the pack contains a mix of human portraits and long-width paintings. There are 16 .GIF files in here, but they were misnumbered after I removed some duplicate files, so they list 19-34 instead of 17-32. I may go back and fix this later.

    ANCIENT RELIEFS TEXTURE PACK #2

Here are some more ancient ruin textures for your cities of old and places still inhabited. The aesthetic is Assyrian mixed with Egyptian, so it could fit into Karath-Din or one of its colonies or outer settlements. (The Precursors used hieroglyphs instead of cuneiform, however, so it might work better for an ancient people further out from the city. (Alternatively you could say that cuneiform was the common man's writing, with hieroglyphs saved for important documents, signs, the royalty, tombs.... ) Texture replacements have been named after canon Thief textures that they could slot over, and hopefully that will make moving them into Dromed texture families easier. They include replacements to turn the talismans into cuneiform tablets (or tablets that double as readables); textures to turn the talismans into animal sigils; cuneiform textures to replace the hieroglyph signs in the Lost City, and animal sigils to replace the hieroglyph signs; a plain clay texture to create clay bottles out of wine bottles, but which could also be used for clay vases; various carved clay textures for small, lootable vases, but which also could be used for bottles; a repeating brick texture with various animal motifs (fish, bull, serpent-lion [serpopard], bee/hornet/wasp, and sirrush) in the same recolours as the first pack's, but with flowers at the top except for the bees; a plain brick texture with a floral border; and various replacements for Lost City wall and catacomb decorations, featuring the sigils and clay carvings from the aforementioned textures. There is also a bonus "Xtras" folder with all of the banners I've released thus far (except a couple of tapestry textures I need to hunt down), now with torn versions of them and banner support poles. It also features three new tapestries that also have support poles and torn versions. This means that, if you chop at them in-game and they're an object, you can now have it that the banner is ripped after you use your sword on it.

This pack has a whopping 118 files, and is 19.12 MB in size. Please let me know if there are any tiling or mapping errors - I couldn't check the texture objects in Dromed. I have to figure out where the TFix high-res textures are so I can go in, replace them, and preview objects with my new textures on them.

**NEW: ANCIENT RELIEFS TEXTURE PACK #3

Comprised of 16 files and totaling 7.82 MB in size, this pack features four Mesopotamian stelae turned into brush textures. The textures are tilable, are compatible with past Ancient Relief releases, and feature left-facing and right-facing versions. They were made in mind to be walls and building decorations, but use them for floors, for ceilings, or whatever else your heart desires. Using them in Precursor missions is one way to feature them in your missions, as well as any other ancient or abandoned places.

Image sharing sites are for looking at pictures, not hosting texture map archives. Why don't you use Google Drive instead?

That's a much better idea. I'm going to convert all these images over to Drive and Photos instead and edit my post. Not sure why I didn't think of that earlier....

Edit: Going to have to find an alternative to Google. GMail asks for phone number conformation when you create an account. I'll try something like Dropbox instead.

Edit 2: Found an uploading site to use, and fixed several problems with the first Painting Pack. I'm working on a second one to go with now, as well as some Pagan-inspired cave art textures for walls.

Edited out unnecessarily-long preview section and replaced it with something simpler. Finished and added Painting Pack #2. (I had a lot of ready-to-go textures in my files, hence the quick update time.) Fixed some links that weren't working. Added a to-do list for future and upcoming projects.

Thanks for the contribution to the community.

These textures have not yet been converted into the Thief Palette with an application such as Bright. I wasn't able to figure out the program, (...)
Don't attempt to do that - New Dark supports 24-bit RGB images by default - .dds, .png, .tga. Palleted images, while still supported by the updated engine, are a thing of the past. Bright can go to museum now.

Try 256x512 or 512x1024 in PNG format for example.

PinkDot, thank you for the updated info. Most of my work has been done trying to learn what I can from various scattered tutorials across the Internet. To know I don't have to worry about Bright anymore is a great relief. I've wanted to contribute to the community for a while now, but as I'm still figuring out Dromed, I couldn't figure out how until this thread.

BassofErrol, thank you too for your help and showing off one of the portraits in-game. I'm going to try and see if I can wrangle Dromed to behave enough to let me import a custom texture of 512x256 or higher. I will attempt to get some of the hi-res images for Portrait Pack 1 in bigger sizes, though I may be able to only go so large because of Mediafire storage and my own connection speed. Portrait Pack 2 I may have to redo larger images for entirely, as in a particularly braindead moment, I deleted all my regular-sized files of Portrait Pack 2 while making space in my documents. I should've been more careful with checking the Recycling Bin.

You could try Recuva to see if it can get the files back.

Thank you for the suggestion, R Soul. I will look into that. If nothing else, I can always track down the paintings I used and try to recreate what I made. That might be easier said than done for the tapestries and banners, but at least the painting-paintings will be remade in a better resolution.

512x1024 for paintings/objects is way overkill. I can't think of any reason why you would ever want that. Just because NewDark allows for high-res textures doesn't mean you have to go all the way with 1K textures, that's the best way to make the engine slow down to a crawl.

What would you recommend as a maximum size, to ensure smooth performance across as many FMs and PCs as possible? Slowing down the engine is the last thing I want to do, especially for beefier missions.

512 is the absolute limit I'd target for both object and terrain textures. You really don't need any texture bigger than that unless it's a really specific case.

I will keep this in mind. Do you also suggest saving in traditional GIF format, or does the engine do fine with PNG file textures?

The engine supports a wide range of formats, the best by far are .DDS and .PNG, with .DDS being lighter than .PNG.

I will keep this in mind. I'll likely use PNG so that it's easier for modders to edit them in almost any program, but it's also likely I'll use DDS in the future for larger textures or if people are saying the engine's starting to chug. I'll see if I can fit a version of both in smaller files if they don't get too big - Mediafire only has a max storage of 2 GB 10 GB for its free plan.

I've also edited into the original post a note about editing these textures. You are free to edit and modify these textures as you see fit. If you'd like to add or take from anything, or if you want to tweak anything to fit your vision or mission aesthetics better, go ahead! All of the resources I used for these are Public Domain. Let your creativity run wild!

Edit: Mediafire has more storage space than I thought. I'm still going to try and get the most out of it that I can.

Added a new Painting Pack with a bonus pack for Dewdrop recolours. Pagan Cave Art textures aren't turning out the way I'd hoped, so I may put those aside for now and finish the Painting Pack series instead. I might also put up what I have here for cave art textures for suggestions and feedback.

You are using resolutions 258x516 and 512x258 with gif format.
You must resize them to 256x512 and 512x256 if you want them to show up properly in the game with that format.
They look ok with those resolutions if you make them png although the format is not really supported under those resolutions.

Thanks for the heads-up. I mixed up the height/width measurements for Dromed this time. An updated link with properly-working textures will be along shortly. Some are PNG, but most are GIF. (I was planning to save them as .PNG wholly, but I went into a rut of saving them as .GIF after working on the Dewdrop textures. Things blended from one into the other after the twentieth file, I think.)

It's not clear what you mean by "doesn't really work". The requirement for 'powers of two' dimensions is for all object and terrain textures of any format.

All files have been fixed and now have proper, Dromed-workable dimensions. If you downloaded the file before, please do so again or resize the files you have with an art program of your choice. Please also have this cute dog video I found as appreciation for everyone's patience with the constant fixing of textures I've had to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJfg0IdzE_A

Edit: Preview is now up for Painting Pack 3 and Dewdrop's Dresses.

Really like your choice of art, Esse! The imagery really fits well in the Thief universe. Keep up the good work

Your kind words are most appreciated. I'm glad that the art so far matches the aesthetics of the Thief universe, and isn't too bright or fantastic to fit in. My hope is to find some more moody portraits and chiaroscuro work to keep the gloomy vibe going, especially if I can edit anything into Hammerite artwork.

A preview for Painting Pack 3 is now available. There is also a sample of the available Dewdrop bonus pack recolours at the very bottom of the image. Again, this pack contains scenes of animals hunting and predating each other, so you may want to skip this pack if that makes you uncomfortable. If you'd like just the portraits and the non-hunting scenes, PM me and I'll send you a file with only them.

Nice work! Always good to have more textures and painting! Looking forward to seeing more from you!

I especially love the Martin Luther painting redone to look like a hammer thing. Very neat idea!
