    Dromed Summer Speedbuild Competition

It was discussed on the Dromed Discord that it might be fun to have a Dromed Speedbuild competition. Whether you’re just itching to build something, or maybe you want a break from that huge project you’re working on, this is a chance to kind of cut loose and make something quickly (and perhaps maybe not so grand or serious).

We’ve done similar things before, like the 48 and 72 hour contests. This will not be a contest per se, as in there won’t be any voting or a declared winner, but instead will just be a friendly competition with your Dromed cohorts, and a chance to see what you can accomplish in a short period of time. I wanted to give everyone a few days ahead of the start time to sort of plan their mission out and gather resources (if necessary), so the competition will officially start on Sunday, August 1st at midnight (CST in the U.S.) and last for 14 days. I’ll assume everyone believes in the honor system and won’t create their .mis file until then. Ahem.

We were initially going to implement a “Summer” theme, but in the end decided against it because it was too limiting (but feel free to use the theme if you so choose). In fact, there are no requirements or limitations on what you can or can’t do, except that you must build something with Dromed and of course must get it to me by the deadline.

Send your missions however possible (via email, a link, through Discord, etc.) by the end of the day on Saturday, August 14th (CST) and then I’ll post all the completed missions together on Sunday.

    So, have at it then…

UPDATE: The deadline has been extended one day, to Sunday, August 15th, CST.

I realize it’s not a true competition, so perhaps asking for clarification on the “rules” is silly, but what’s the policy on using pre-existing multibrushes? Eg if I have a bunch of prefabricated stuff, can it be used? Or does that go against the spirit of the “contest”?

I'd say using a multibrush of something relatively small or simple, like a spiral staircase, would be fine. But if you import large chunks of geometry, yeah, you're pretty much defeating the purpose there.

Can an argument be made as to how "Summer" is too limiting?

I can easily imagine many elements it may have; the sun, the heat, ships, the docks, pirates, paradise, islands, beaches, "Summer of Love" type eves or whatever Summer Celebration the real pagans had (remember Christmas?) and even allergy. Daytime, too, but nothing wrong with night, which could even be as visible as daytime sometimes.

I really would love to see some Summer-themed missions, guess all I can do is hope that the authors also add a bit of Summer theme to it.

    >“Summer” theme

45°C, midday, wind 0.5m/sec; Garrett in a dark leather suit moving through the deserted City towards cold storage facility as he has a request for 10 kg of ice. Cold storage is guarded by semi-melted mechanists seeking some shadow under the overheated Children of Karras. The air is disgusting because of the temperature and the smog of the wood fires around the City. His mask is almost black of cinder. And his thermos for the "request" is made of fabric and aluminum foil. But a job is a job.

We're halfway through, who is working on a mission? I started on one, but have decided not to push myself to finish it so it's the latest unfinished idea on the large heap in the back corner of my Dromed closet.

Let's hope there will be a few entries at least! This idea is really cool.

I only just found this contest now. I only have less than a week and I don't think I can get anything done by that time, let alone come up with a story unfortunately. To be honest, even if I saw this on the first day I don't think I would have been able to make it, I'm always intrigued how fast people can get missions out there. Maybe I'm just a really slow builder

    Good luck to everyone

Sounds great! Can't wait to see it.

@Niborius, at least I hope you are working on a sequel to Secrets of the Old City.

From discussion on the DromEd discord server, I would estimate that there are at least three submissions that have been started in Thief 1. Whether they make the deadline exactly or come later will be seen, but good luck to all the authors nevertheless!

I'm extending the deadline by one day through Sunday, August 15th. I thought an extra weekend day might help some authors if they're trying to wrap things up but are pinched for time before the deadline hits.
