    Redfall - Arkane

It's a FPS looter shooter, SP or co-op. Coming to PC and Xbox Series.

I'm a fan of Borderlands so this could be fun, at least gameplay-wise. The dialogue... needs work.

Looks super generic and boring, but it's Arkane so...it's probably not?

I'm really curious to see Arkane's take on a large and truly open world game.

The footage released so far doesn't do much for me, but then again, my personal experience actually playing Arkane games tends to be pretty different from the gameplay experience depicted in promotional trailers.

If they incorporate all the usual Arkane trappings of strong level design, emergent gameplay systems, exploration and stealth into an interesting, large and seamless open world... that all sounds quite lovely to me.

The more they've talked about this, the more excited I'm getting. Some of the coverage so far is making it sound like a co-op STALKER or Far Cry 2 except with Arkane's usual flourishes.

Also, we've missed some trailers apparently.

I thought this was Red Frost when I first clicked on the thread. Red Frost (formerly FrostFall) has stuck "in development" now for a long time. It was originally something like "a 2021 release", then 2022, then it's just not been updated lately on Steam. Looked very promising though. Maybe it's not quite dead yet.

This looks good as well. I'll keep my eyes on it.

Gameplay doesn't look like they provided for much of a stealthy approach to the fights... looks very action orientated.

The setting and game world look interesting, but, if they don't allow for a stealth way of gameplay like in Dishonored, I don't think I really want to play it. And, the gameplay vids look nothing like it really.

The teasers for Deathloop and Prey didn't show stealth either, and while it's not the focus of either game it's certainly a usable part of both. I wouldn't make assumptions until it's out.

Oh yeah, another new teaser. I think this is looks fucking fantastic.

The pre-release stuff for this reminds me of Deathloop, in a good way. It looks like it's hitting all the Arkane notes without being an homage to a classic. Like they're building on their own work now.

Also...what a horrible way to die. I was waiting for a "what a shame" there.

I'm hoping the single player portion of the game is strong, even though it's being labeled as a co-op game. I did read a quote recently from one of the devs that said the game is "more Far Cry than Left 4 Dead" so that leaves me a little optimistic.

Edit: OK, watched the above video, and I think it looks great. Looks like single player is very viable, and there are some stealthy possibilites as well. I think I've just gone from lukewarm to stoked for this one.

Yeah, it looks much more like a co-op STALKER or Far Cry 2+ than Left4Dead. Plus Arkane.

Hmm, promising, but I hope the gear progression system isn't too grindy / RNG.
Any word on whether it has any monetisation? It looks like the kind of game that would, but Arkane have never done that before, so I'm hoping not.

Harvey Smith has expressed his love and admiration for Far Cry 2 a number of times over the years, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some significant influence from it.

That "Official Gameplay Deep Dive" trailer is just about the best job I've ever seen Arkane do in explaining and selling one of their games.

I find it fascinating seeing all the influences: I'm pretty sure I saw some features taken straight from popular competitive shooters I rarely see mentioned on TTLG. The most obvious and broadly recognizable example was what appears to be a straight lift of Unreal Tournament's translocator... which was a cool little invention, so why not?

In my music scene back during post-adolescence, I remember a guitarist express with disgust how he could never use tapping, the implication being he associated it with the bombast and cheese of 80s metal. And I remember arguing... why not? It's just another technique to add to your vocabulary. Through careful arrangement and restraint, it could work within your sphere of sensibilties, maybe even encourage you to do something fresh and new.

I kind of see that with what Arkane's been doing with Deathloop and Redfall. Just because we associate certain mechanics or traits with games outside of the realm of immersive sims, RPGs or stealth games doesn't mean a clever developer couldn't curate and integrate some of those specific mechanics into these games.

If anything, these integrations might provide fresh opportunities to give us something surprising and memorable.

I'd echo Jason's comments as well. It's just great to see Arkane striving to really do their own thing.

I guess I'm not getting it - what's the connection here to Far Cry 2 (as opposed to 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.)?

Without playing Redfall, I can't specifically tell you.

But Far Cry 2 has long been considered the odd one in the family; some despise it for its idiosyncrasies and some revere it for many of those same idiosyncrasies. Development was headed by Clint Hocking (of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory fame), someone known for his love of immersive sims and ambitious systems-based gameplay.

But since I've already contributed my TL;DR post of the day, here's an essay on Far Cry 2 Harvey Smith himself wrote for the Penny Arcade Report back in 2012 (archive URL because the Penny Arcade Report no longer exists):

Dishonored’s Harvey Smith explains the genius of Far Cry 2

I know it's kind of a cult classic, and has somewhat of an infamous reputation, but I didn't see anything in the Redfall trailers that made me think of it. Only reason I brought it up was that FC2 has been mentioned several times in this thread.

Now that I think about it, I believe it's the only main Far Cry game that I haven't finished yet. I should probably get on that.

I think Far Cry 2 (though it had its flaws) is the most open and emergent of the series. You had an objective and could approach however you liked with the tools at your disposal.

Far Cry 3 was kinda where the series turned into a generic Ubisoft open world game, a pile of icons on a map that you have to clear by doing the same thing over and over.

2 was just kinda nuts. Like you'd launch a rocket at a camp, then engage the enemies, meanwhile the backflash from the rpg set the grass on fire and suddenly you're getting shot because you're frantically trying to find a place that isn't burning. Then your gun jams and you start blacking out because you have malaria. Pop a pill, head into a building and keep firing. Then something sets off the pile of ammo next to the window and you have popcorn explosions going off in your face.

People complained about respawning checkpoints, but I always kinda liked how they made you look at the map and try to find the optimal way to get somewhere with minimal engagement. And it had the best jungle atmosphere of any of the games somehow. Collecting blood diamonds to buy gear. The weird buddy system. Enemies that you can't see dropping mortars on your head. The game map being an actual physical object that you had to pull out and look at. Every single thing outside of the safe town doing everything they could to murder you. Damn it I need to go replay it.

One of the biggest crimes in gaming is that rather than ironing out a few of the annoying elements of Far Cry 2, Unisoft just flat out paved over it with generic open world collectathon shite.

Redfall will require an online connection, even in single-player, Bethesda confirms
Under the question, “will playing Redfall require an online connection for single player as well as co-op?”, the FAQ states: “A persistent online connection is required for single player and co-op.”

It also states that a Bethesda.net account will be required to play the game.
    Welp, I'm out.

Purchasing this is gonna be a nope from me, dawg. Exclusively Game Pass rental territory. I don't do always online DRM for SP.

Always online is not a complete deal breaker, but it factors into the price I'll pay. I'm willing to pay more for a movie on Blu-Ray than the same movie on a streaming service, because I retain an offline playable copy. Same with games. A game that requires a persistent connection may as well be streamed, and I'm not down with that at $70.

The world looks good. The gameplay looks like typical Arkane guns & magic.

But vampires, why'd it have to be vampires?
