Thanks. I feel like I have to stay off the internet now; even just scrolling through Twitter I’m seeing random videos of people fighting major bosses. I still haven’t reattempted Margit yet.

Yeah, I've unsubbed from the ER Reddit for that very reason.
Going through it blind is a real treat.

I just finished Stormvale Castle, grafted Godrick a new a-hole..
Stormvale Castle is one of the best FS levels I've ever played - it's grandiose and filled with detail.
This game rewards exploration a lot, which is great as that is most of what I enjoy doing.

I think I have done probably most of what there is to do in the starting region.
May spend some time trying to beat Tree Sentinel now.

One very persistent annoyance for me at the moment is that I tend to tense my hands when fighting tough enemies and keep unintentionally pressing the L stick which tosses me from my horse / goat / goat-horse-whatever, which is obviously not ideal when fighting mounted enemies. This is a me problem and I need to maybe let my hands relax more, but hard to control it.

Margit's down, with the help of some wolf buddies in phase 2. Someday I'll come back and beat him solo. I'm finally getting the hang of enemy posture; I learned that if you attack aggressively, you'll fill up an invisible meter that will eventually stagger the boss and let you get in a visceral attack. That's a touch of Sekiro in that it encourages engagement over hiding. Conversely, there's guard countering, which I'm just reading about, and it sounds like it could make using a shield a lot more interesting.

I'm also finding generally that weapons that I have the skill to use are more effective than in previous souls games, where you'd find tons of weapons but most would be seemingly useless unless you consulted the wiki to learn what specific elemental traits you need to apply and in what specific circumstances they'll actually work. For instance, I found some claws in the castle that do surprising damage off the bat, so much that I'm actually leaving them equipped for now, and that's never been the case before. So for me it's encouraging experimentation.

My button gripe is accidentally summoning my horse when I mean to drink a flask or vice-versa. Guess I need to familiarize myself with the quick menu. And motion-enabled gestures on PS5 are finicky as they ever were in Souls games, so I've disabled them, which is a shame because they could be fun for PVP.

I've been abusing the hell out of that in my playthrough. It's easy to do. You just hold up your shield, wait for them to hit you, then immediately swing a heavy attack the moment they bounce off your shield. You're almost guaranteed a stagger against a smaller enemy.

Also, almost all dex based weapons have a bleed stat applied to them by default.

Bleed is great, it's why I want to respec dex, but I haven't figured out how to source a good supply of the thing you seem to need in order to do that. I don't want to get stuck in some weird spec and I want to at least try dex and magic. Anyway, the only str weapon with bleed I have is the morningstar, and I always equip that for bosses along with the Wild Swing weapon art. Any boss that stops moving for a while just gets chewed up. Also the jump attack is fast, closes distance well and seems to fill the stagger meter almost as well as a charged heavy attack, so that gets a lot of use.

I like going to places I have no business being in in the hopes I might luck into some cool items, so right off the bat I went as far east into Caelid as I could. It's the place in the trailers where dex lady and star general square off. There's a couple places where you can pull lots of enemies into each other and have them fight for your amusement to the tune of 7k xp a round, which is how I got quite a few levels, so the first two legacy dungeons were a relative cinch, although Rennala's second phase can go to hell. On a similar note the Radahn Festival is a shitty festival, can we just do Obon or something? I think I'll have to leave it for later, but it's not like there's a lack of things to do. I should probably do another round of Stormveil Castle, because I definitely saw some items that I never found my way to. And there has to be a way to open the door above the grafted monstrosity.

I have no idea how many of these big dungeons there are in total, but I hope several more, because the first two were great. The field dungeons on the other hand get a bit repetitive once you start seeing the same building blocks being reused over and over, but not to a Skyrim level at least.

I'm also liking the parry timing more. I still wish it was instantaneous like Sekiro, but it feels a little more synced up with what's actually happening as compared to the weirdness of Dark Souls. I was having lots of trouble beating the grafted scion (the intro boss) in Stormveil, until I learned to parry it and took it down in four or five of em.

I haven't even tried parrying yet; I never could do it reliably enough to count on it. I get that it's supposed to be a high risk and reward type of thing, but mostly it was just risk. I should probably go practice with some weak enemies if they've made it more intuitive.

Also, are the message up-/downvotes broken or are you really not supposed to see what the breakdown is? I'm a bit fuzzy on it but weren't you able to in previous games? As far as I can tell both just make the rating go up, so there's no way to gauge the reliability of the message.

General rule of thumb? If you come across a message situated on the edge of a cliff telling you to jump down, don't do it. This is triply true if there are a lot of bloodstains surrounding it.

Someone telling you there's a secret behind a wall? Chances are better than good there isn't, but you may as well try it anyway, since you risk nothing in doing so.

A warning for a tough fight ahead? Take it seriously. More often than not, they're telling the truth. Worst case scenario is you'll get yourself psyched up over something that dies after a couple of smacks with your sword.

I only have a heater shield, which seems like it has a relatively slow parry, but my sense so far is that you should time it as if you were actually trying to swipe away the attack. So once the enemy's sword starts falling, hit L2. It's probably a bit different for every enemy, but for slower, more deliberate attacks I've had pretty good success (and I could hardly ever do it in old Souls).

Reminds me most of DS1 parry which is my favourite of the series.

I went back to Stormveil Castle to explore because there were some doors I never managed to open, and turns out I probably missed at least half of the place. Even one boss! In case anyone else went through the place with blinders on the first time, here's some of the bigger things I missed:

1: From the Liftside Chamber bonfire take the lift up and in the room with the pot guys circle around the platform and climb on the wall. After a couple jumps you'll find a door and the path is fairly self-explanatory, but involves a lot of dropping down.

2: From the Rampart Tower bonfire go towards the eagles and after the first three drop down from the left side.

3: Also from the Rampart Tower go back towards the lift and up and circle around to the rooftop with the six hoodie guys. You can get on the rampart using the sacks, and there's a whole lot of rooftop running after that. The tower on the right can be entered for an item and a surprise for the murder bird.

There were some other little nooks that I missed earlier too, but those were the big ones. It's pretty impressive how much exploration they managed to cram into this place, and how easy it is to miss a huge chunk of it if you're just focused on getting to the main objective.

At one point in Stormveil Castle I fell off a roof into a big hole and at the bottoms, right before I died, I saw a giant stone face. No idea how to get to it, but yeah, there’s definitely more to see than is initially apparent.

That place is covered by one of the above sections! I won't spoil which one, but it's quite a trip!

I should poke around the second legacy dungeon more too but I didn't get the feeling there was quite as much to it. I feel like the same goes for the regions they're in; Limgrave is absolutely jam-packed with detail and you're constantly tripping over field dungeons, but I can't help but feel the areas that come after are a lot more sparse. Not that that has to be a bad thing.

I took my time to explore the castle as fully as I felt I could before boss fight.
    Took way longer than anticipated.

Only one thing so far I truly dislike about this game:

"Put these foolish ambitions to rest."
"Put these foolish ambitions to rest."
"Put these foolish ambitions to rest."
"Put these foolish ambitions to rest."

"Put these foolish ambitions to rest."
"Put these foolish ambitions to rest."
"Lowly tarnished. Thou art unfit even for grafting!"
"Lowly tarnished. Thou art unfit even for grafting!"

I'm dying to these bosses a lot, and while they've removed most of the friction by putting bonfires close by, the endless repetitive taunting is annoying. Thank goodness the loading is fast at least.

If you're still stuck and don't mind being cheap, rot/poison & avoid until dead will put his grafting days behind him. Wait til you get to a certain unnamed boss and have to do the long setup for the 20th time while fighting the auto-adjusting camera, just to get pulverized in seconds by some basketball court sized AOE that he spams without pause once the actual fight starts. I've never had so much trouble with a souls boss.

Oh, I beat him already. I ended using summoning help from an NPC I found elsewhere in the castle, and it was easy then. I’m still in the mindset that I need to get it solo, but I also don’t really want every encounter to take hours and hours, so I may resort to summoning more often.

You know what really sucks? When you're literally one hit away from finishing a boss, and your controller picks THAT VERY MOMENT to crap out on you.

    It's just...

    ...SONUVABITCH!

I'm 34 hours in, just beat Godrick. Phew. My progress so far: spent the first 10 hours exploring everything south and a bit east of Stormgate, then everything to the north, all the way to the Lift. Only really got into Stormveil castle at 25h or so. Been fast traveling all over the place mopping up dungeons and bosses for the last 10 hours. Got Wolverine blades on my hands, feeling like a badass.

So I'm fighting Rennala, for about the 50th time. She's summoned the dragon, but I still have 3/4ths of my health, about 4 flasks, and she's only a couple of hits away. I roll under the dragon fire, approach her, hit her for a stagger, and land home that final swing.

    She's dead.

I drop the controller in my lap, relieved that the fight is finally, FINALLY over. I'm watching her dissolve into bright light as she says her going away phrase...

...then the dragon lands on me, killing me in one hit.

    So I'm still fighting her.

So many going-away phrases! The people in Elden Ring talk a lot, but they don't say very much.

Really loving this so far. :3

Magrit was a pain, but still enjoyed the fight against him. Ended up using the wolf trio spirit summon. Felt a bit guilty as my purpose is to kill every boss in the game solo. Oh, well...

By comparison, Godrick didn't even take me more than ten attempts.

Ah, it seems I also stumbled and parry-killed the Crucible Knight at Stormveil Castle. Took me more than a few tries. :3

    Wheeeee!
