Finally beat Margit, although it only took me 4 tries. I have spent a lot of time exploring limgrave and leveling up.

I woke up today to find the message about Elden Ring I eagerly wrote to all of you in bed after taking a sleeping pill, preserved for posterity:

Started reasonably but went downhill fast I kinda regret not taking notes too, because I end up reading way too much about things or watching some step-by-step video when I google stuff. I was determined to do my first playthrough blind but it hasn't really panned out like that, although I only look up things I was already doing, I don't go out of my way to hunt down questlines.

I started taking notes, but they're completely incomprehensible anyway!

I've been taking notes for games like this for a long time. There's just something so satisfying about exploring and drawing connections and ticking off things. And it can be games as different as La-Mulana, Obra Dinn, The Witness... they all seem to scratch fundamentally the same itch as long as they support and reward exploration and knowledge gathering.

With Bloodborne there were multiple occasions where I got stuck because the place I needed to go was someplace I’d already been but forgotten about. So for Elden Ring I did in fact get a little notebook, and I write down whenever I see something unusual that I can’t resolve (“pedestal for item here,” “locked door here,” “saw a cave; explore later”). I’m also trying to keep track of the quests, but let’s be realistic — if ER is anything like every souls game, I’ll have to miraculously be in the right place at the right time over and over again to actually get the best endings.

Also, fuck Rhadan although it’s a pretty great conceit for a boss fight. Plus it’s hilarious how you can summon Patches, who takes a look around and then leaves. Even with a festival’s worth of companions I couldn’t get the boss much past half, so I may have to come back leveled up (how often will I be saying that?)

He's absolutely insane, I honestly thought I might not be able to beat him no matter how many times I tried. When trying to convey the frustration to my non-souls friend, FightinCowboy's video here was very helpful, especially the montage of the many many deaths at around the 21 minute mark. Obviously huge spoilers for those who haven't gotten there yet; it's a pretty standout moment in the game so don't ruin the surprise for yourself!

Anyway, I went from thinking it was a cool fight, to thinking it was total bullshit, to again thinking it was pretty cool after I finally got him. Definitely not looking forward to doing it again though.

Is anyone else having trouble summoning players? I’ve never seen a summonsign from another player, despite activating every marker I’ve come across and used the Furlcalling Finger Remedy near a few of them. Just put down my own summon marker near a boss but no one’s summoning me. I see spirits of other players running around, but I seem to be completely cut off from everyone else as far as summoning goes. :( Or am I just doing something wrong?

I've read that the high player activity means that there is usually a high contention rate for summon signs, so when you are activating it, there are probably a few other people doing it at the same time, so you only have a 1 in x chance of success.
This makes sense to me because I've noticed that I never have long to wait to be summoned myself.

I'm not even getting that far. The only summon signs I've seen are the ones for NPCs like the one before Godrick.

I haven't done any real-person summoning or helping yet, so I can't say if it works.

However, I am pleased to report that the Starscourge is now stardust. I put five or six more levels into my health so that he (mostly) couldn't one-shot me, and I upgraded my Bloodhound's Fang, and then it just took a couple tries to get a run with good luck and he went down relatively easily.

By the way, the Bloodhound Fang is far and away the best weapon I've found so far for dexterity/strength; it staggers anything and makes it bleed, too, and I could see myself using it for most of the game except that's kinda boring so maybe I'll start switching it up for kicks. I killed a weird stretchy guy draped in skin and got a twinblade as reward. Maybe I'll try holding with both hands.

having spent some hours basking in discovery I had to rely on my son's tips to give me a bit of an advantage, and I unashamedly use a wiki because I'm impatient. Even with exrtra information I can still discover things.

There's a good spot for a rune farming and practicing dodging in greyholl's dragonbarrow against imps that can kill you very quickly but don't need too many hits to take down and you get 1094 runes each. When I decided to ride back along the coast I saw a tower on the right that looked climbable, and looking closer it's possible to get on via a big tree root. Didn't get all the way up as I hadn't got a good ranged attack to take down enemies on the ledges, but a discovery nevertheless.

Took down Margit with the help of Rogier and a Jellyfish summon, and a faith scaling sword you have to trek to the altus plain to find.

I was struggling with godrick so took a break and leveled up a bit, tried to get into the academy but didn't get past the red hound, went far enough into caria manor to find the sword of night and flame, then went down to Soifra to find Marika's Scarseal - which involved racing past the spectral vikings who like to snipe you with giant arrows to find a waygate to get up top. The talisman boosts faith and int so was able to actually use the sword, and it's an utterly bonkers item that feels a bit like cheating with both the skills it has, but I don't care particularly - I think it's great that you can use some knowledge to get silly advantages against some enemies, but you can still go somewhere else and get blown away instantly from overconfidence. You still have to use judgement with some overpowered items, and even if you can wipe out most of an enemy's health in two seconds finishing off can still be a challenge - like agressive rune bears

I finally beat Margit last night, man, it feels like that was unnecessarily difficult, especially for the first big boss in the game. I've played thru Dark Souls 1 and 2, and half of 3, and have never summoned anyone to help me with a boss fight before. For Margit, I had to summon 2 AI to assist. Kind of wondering at this point how ugly the road ahead is! That said, still an awesome game though, this really feels like an all-timer.

Margit felt like a wall to me, but my sense is that the game is intended to be harder unless you're willing to use all the tools at your disposal, in which case it actually can be easier. I tried to beat him solo for an hour or so and eventually gave up and used the spirit summons. But (spoiler alert) he comes back later on, and I got him solo then, the smug jerk.

One thing I find frustrating here (and probably with all Souls games) is how little information you get sometimes as a player. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I had no idea what Spirit Ashes were in the game. I never ran into the NPC that gives out the summoning bell early on, I had to read online to find out about it (eventually I was able to buy it at Roundtable Hold). Then I kept hearing about the Jellyfish Ashes, so I went to find the NPC who gives them to you (Roderika) at Stormhill Shack. Well, she wasn't where she's supposed to be. Read more online, and found out she may move to Roundtable Hold. OK, go there, talk to her multiple times, nothing. Read more online. So I find out I have to talk to the blacksmith, then her again, then back and forth between those two several times, then come back later after resting, and she's become a vendor. You then have to (literally) beg her for the Jellyfish (you have to choose the "Please" option in her NPC menu, that's all it says, I'm not kidding).

Wow, surprising I couldn't figure that all out by myself!

I'd like to think you can reasonably do all these things in-game without consulting online guides, but it seems so unlikely. Again, not really crying here, but it seems things could sometimes be a bit more intuitive. I don't need (or want) objective markers and quest logs and mini maps, or any of that BS, but when there are major features you could completely miss by just playing normally, that seems like it might need some adjusting.

I know, WAH, WAH. (Just waiting for it, tough guys).

Yeah, that's Souls for ya. Reading every item description is tedious, but it help, though you do definitely miss stuff unless you use the wiki. My process is usually to play it once blind and then use a wiki for NG+, but that's a bigger ask in a game as huge as Elden Ring. I'm at 50 hours and I haven't even beaten half of the demigods yet. Not sure I'll be up for round 2.

I'm a bit disappointed because, allegedly, he was nerfed in the most recent patch for the game, and I arrived somewhat on a higher level than the recommended (Lv. 100+). I didn't use any summons and ended up beating him after only a few tries. It was a fun, and spectacular fight that kept me on my toes, but still felt a bit dispirited when I beat him. Oh, well...

I'm currently down at Nokron, Eternal City, and it's been a blast. :3 I love these underground parts of the world, I dig how they visually made a place of perpetual night, with glittering "stars" dotting the "sky".

While there, I had a run-in with two Crucible Knights (fought the sword & shield variant in Stormveil Castle), including said variant, and a new one with a halberd-like weapon. Some good, stiff combat with these fellas. I also fought a duo-boss fight, a pair of Valiant Gargoyles. The fight made me nervous at bit 'coz both pack a wallop, but only one would hammer away at me while the other kept at bay, so I didn't feel overly pressured. I beat them on my first try.

    Good times!
