Where do the Thief games rank in your personal top?

Thief The Dark Project was my favorite game from 1999 to 2008, when I finally got into Deus Ex. To this day these two games are still my number 1 and 2.

Thief II didn't make a entry in my list, it was a big disappointment for me due to weaker atmosphere and level design.

Thief Deadly Shadows was just a good game for me, I don't include those in my personal top.

Thief 2014 was a misunderstanding, let's leave it at that

    6. Max Payne 1
    7. Doom 3
    8. Max Payne 2
    9. Heretic II

On the PC for me the big three have always been the Thief and Deus Ex series (without getting into comparing individual titles within each franchise), and System Shock 2.

In the SNES days it would have been RPGs such as Secret Of Mana and Terranigma.

In the Spectrum days it would have been the Dizzy series, and maybe others I have forgotten now.

But in the PC era those three were the big three. TDP & the first DE blew me away when I first played them. Oddly enough I didn't really get into TMA when I first played it, but my second playthrough around two years later was another one of my all-time great gaming experiences.

They rank pretty highly for me.

    1. Thief: The Dark Project/Gold
    2. Quake
    3. Elden Ring
    4. The Witcher 3 GOTY
    5. System Shock 2
    6. Unreal
    7. Thief 2: The Metal Age
    8. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
    9. Alien: Isolation
    10. Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss

@Azaran: Didn't expect Doom 3 to be in any Top 10. It's an unfairly maligned game imo.

It's a great horror experience. When I first played it (at night), it left me genuinely uncomfortable afterwards, looking over my shoulder (in a good way, no other game has managed that, not even Amnesia)

Putting Elden Ring on this list would be a tough one for me. I do feel like it's one of the best game experiences I've ever had, but it hasn't even been out two months yet, so I feel like I'd want to wait awhile to see if the allure sticks.

Thief 1 would be my clear cut #1 game of all-time. I'd have to think more about the rest. I'm guessing Skyrim, Dying Light, SS2, Doom and some of the early Zelda games would be in there somewhere too.

Max Payne 1&2 were in my top 10 for the longest time too. My current top looks something like this:

1 thief 1=had best mission order and story
2 thief gold=extra missions were nice but the order of missions was bad and they ruined talisman's layout
3 thief 2=dewdrop was epic ,but lack of magic hurt this game,it became to average looking levels
4 thief 3=the turning of character then moving felt like garrett had a hip replacement, everything else was great story/levels,i did not mind loading hubs

I think the idea is to rank the Thief games in comparison to your other favorite all-time games, not against each other.

Thief 1 and 2 are "great but don't rate" for me personally. They definitely land in the top 25 probably:

    1. System Shock 2
    2. Dishonored 2
    3. Deus Ex
    4. Zelda: BotW (greatest im-sim of the past decade were it not for D2)
    5. Thief: Deadly Shadows
    6. Bloodborne (Haven't beaten Elden Ring yet, might swap them)
    7. Hitman: Blood Money
    8. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
    9. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
    10. Starsiege: Tribes

The list is always changing, but currently I guess it's about...

    Silent Hill 2
    Thief 2: The Metal Age
    Dark Souls 1
    Vampire: The Masquerade -- Bloodlines
    Planescape: Torment

...in terms of general atmosphere, storytelling, and replayability.

If I were in a different mood, you'd see more games like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri on there.

I'm one of these heathens who prefer T2 over T1, never been a big fan of the trickster missions, although I will admit that the levels feel overall "tighter" in T1 and T2 uses some cheap tricks, I still prefer the flow of missions and increased detail in the sequel.

Well, well, time to show my top 10 as well then!
The genres I like are kinda diverse so hopefuly there won't be too much games nobody knows between a few famous ones! haha

    1) Thief The Dark Project/Thief Gold

    3) Outlaws
    4) Heroes of Might & Magic III
    5) Thief 2 : The Metal Age
    6) Broken Sword
    7) King's Quest
    8) Turok
    9) E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy
    10) Army Men

I could give as honorable mentions :

    This is it, chief.

Anyway, it changes pretty regularly but my current personal list goes something like this (so the list doesn't get completely crowded by the same things I've limited it to one game per series):

    1. Thief TDP/Gold
    2. Dishonored 2
    3. Bloodborne
    4. Deus Ex
    5. System Shock 2
    6. Dungeon Keeper 2
    7. Dawn of War (specifically its Dark Crusade Expansion, but all of DoW 1 is great on some level)
    8. Dark Souls
    9. Psychonauts
    10. Bioshock 2

I've played too many good games so I'm already second guessing this list. Other honourable mentions include Alien Isolation, Silent Hill 2, DUSK, Prey (2017), Blood, TES IV Oblivion, A Hat in Time, E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, F.E.A.R., and Portal. I'd put Elden Ring on the list somewhere too if it weren't for recency bias.

    1. T2
    2. TG
    3. World of Warcraft (until Cataclysm 2010)
    4. Combat Mission (all WW2 ones)
    5. Company of Heroes
    6. Silent Hunter 3
    7. Civ 5
    8. Total War: Rome
    9. XCom Enemy Unknown

T 1 and 2 are easily my favourite games. I can still enjoy playing through them now. I preferred T2 over TG mostly because I preferred sneaking through buildings and mansions to caverns and ruins. It just felt more thiefy to me.

I never played Deus Ex. I still don't know anything about it except it's popular among Thief fans. I think I should give it a go!

Thief: TDP/Gold is my all-time favorite as well. The rest of the list would include, in no particular order, Thief 2, Dishonored and Dishonored 2, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, Grand Theft Auto V, and Doom Eternal.

Do you mean the whole franchise or just KQ1? Your Beneath a Steel Sky impressed me as well.

For most people it is hard to get into it because the first mission is off putting - you are thrown into a large map with quite a lot of enemies, it's a hard mission even if you completed the tutorial (I highly recommend that you do). But once you complete the mission and return to the office, the Deus Ex magic begins. It took me a few tries from 2006 to 2008 until I finally beat the first mission.

I loved playing the PS2 version too even though it was dumbed down, but the controls are amazingly well done, it's a very underrated port of the game especially now that you can play it on emulator with better graphics and no loading times and at 60 frames.

I hated Deus Ex Human Revolution when it came out and I still strongly dislike it after playing it 2 times, it has the annoying features of modern triple A games like auto health which makes no sense in a Deus Ex game. I liked Mankind Divided better, but most people agree that the original is the best one.

    1. Mount&Blade
    2. Thief 2
    3. Heroes of Might Magic II
    4. DeusEx
    5. Fallout 1
    6. Fallout 2
    7. Bunch of LucasArts adventures (Monkey Island, etc)
    8. Might and Magic 6-7-8
    9. Conquest of the New World

Something like that. Yes, I don't like T1, don't even remember the plot of T3, and dislike T4 for its strange world and overly-consoleish gameplay.
