Er, uh, mixed, that's what I'd have to say. Mixed.
Because it would take a lot more than just replacing Garrett's voice, but I have to admit that it would be a decent start..
So LZ18 posted about a new AI audio generator that can mimic any voice perfectly; I tried it with Garrett's voice and the results are impressive.
So now that we have this, what do people think about redoing the Garrett (or other) audios for Nuthief with proper voices and better lines? This can be a game changer (pun intended)

Nothing wrong with Garrett's voice in Thi4f, I think that the new guy is great in his role. His lines obviously aren't always that great (it's not the actor's fault though), but it's the random chatter of guards and bystanders that really needs improvement. Still, I don't know if it's really worth it, since there are other things in the game that should be addressed first.
The thought of replacing all the voices in Thief 2014 with classic character voices...now that would be interesting but yes, there are many other issues with the game that just can't be fixed. Did anyone even come up with a way to rip the sound files from Thief 2014? I remember Thief 3 had a number of modding tools very quickly after release, but nothing ever really happened for Thief 2014. It just died.
If someone stepped up to see if any modding tools were possible, it may find a second life but I don't think the interest is there. Too bad.
Why would anyone want to sully Stephen Russell's voice with Thief 2014? His absence from that game was a blessing.
I don't see the point of replacing the voice of Garrett simply because Garrett in Thiaf isn't even the same person. His story, his motives, his whole persona, that was all written with a different world in mind. I mean what's the point really? The original trilogy is completely different and nothing from it is compatible with the new game, and I mean quite literally nothing.
Well, it's a start toward modding the game in some form...which has been sorely lacking. The lines could be altered to some degree, they don't have to be word for word...so potentially they could be remade with Classic Thief in mind. Perhaps the texts within the game could be altered as well if someone were to find a way to edit them. Thief 2014 really discouraged modding in every way. Deadly Shadows had some really decent content replacement tools in a rather short time. Maybe any movement on something like this would inspire people to revisit it and see if it could be modded more deeply...or maybe not. I would be interested.
I feel like Thief 2014 should be left alone as it is, to me trying to mold it into something that resembles the original games is akin to modding Dishonored. I mean when you really think about it, both Dishonored and Thief 2014 are almost on the same level of being a Thief sequel, conceptually speaking. The only advantage the new Thief game has, is that it uses the names related to Thief in general. Water arrows? The City? Garrett? Only Thief has those.
But then you take a look at what those actually are, the setting is completely different, the equipment looks completely different, the Garrett character is someone else. And so on. I'm sure this has been brought up in some form before, so no need to dwell on it too much. All that I'm really wondering about is why you'd want to work on AI voices for a game that isn't fundamentally Thief, where instead you could use it for fanmissions and other projects in the actual Thief setting, you know what I mean?
Sure but if it spawned some interest then some folks might decide to try and break the engine open a little more. The game engine itself is quite decent. If there had been a level editor along the lines of what was eventually released with TDS, there could have been some potential for some decent fan missions. With a level editor, the rope arrows most likely could have been expanded to work in more areas...and I'm sure player movement could have been more fully expanded. Without some tools though, nothing can ever really come of it.
Potentially, depends on how the rope arrow properties were assigned to materials. If it were possible to find a way to add the rope arrow property to wood that wasn't in designated areas, then perhaps. Same with jumping. You could only jump where the devs allowed you to jump. I think that was by way of some invisible entity. Perhaps it would be possible to stretch those entities throughout the entire map. No idea if that would ever be possible but someone with some coding know how might be able to spot something. It's too bad we have no way of extracting the maps and opening them in an unreal editor.
I donīt see any reason to use this for Thief 2014. The issue is not the voice acting, itīs the game itself. So itīs more like putting sugar on a turd.
Aside that, IMHO Romano Ozari didnīt a bad job.
I would see more use in the tool for FMs. Some other games like Gothic already use AI generated voice files for fanmade content.
