New T2 Mission 3/19/2023: The Sunken Library

The library in the ruins of Darkglow has been untouched for centuries. It's sat in the middle of a city teeming with undead, with no possible way in; its knowledge and secrets hidden forever within its magically sealed halls.

Until a week ago, that is.

Apparently, some kind of tidal wave hit Darkglow, flowing over the ruin and smashing its magical wards
to dust. For the first time in many hundreds of years, the library is open again. Or, at least, open
    enough for my purposes.

My main target is "The Book of Untold Stories", some kind of anthology that apparently has some pretty
sizable enchantments on it. My client is certain it will be on the top floor, assuming it's still intact,
locked away with a collection of other magical texts.

With the place open, there is no sense in waiting. The longer I delay the more time the local government,
the Dominion, has to organise itself and launch a full cleansing. Their bureaucracy is slow, but I really don't want to be here when
the hammer finally falls, and there won't be much left once they are done.

(NOTE: This mission was created by Angder, not by me. He does not yet have a TTLG forum account but it's in process. Until then, DOWNLOAD AND ENJOY! If you liked the original "Haunted Cathedral" mission, you will LOVE this!)

Additional cautions: This is for Thief 2. This mission contains undead and SPIDERS! My personal assessment: It is spooky, but not terrifying to the level of Shalebridge Cradle, A Night in Rocksbourg 3, etc. In other words for those of you who don't like scary missions or the undead: give it a chance, it is not that bad.

Finished 1h 55m 3055 loot. It's not a bad mission. Still not a spidey fan though. Thankfully I didn't have to go below the sewers to progress. Definitely got a bit of that Old Quarter feel to it.

55 minutes?? took me 3h 20m! i guess partly that was due to me mostly avoiding enemies instead of dispatching them, so quite a lot of sitting in corners waiting for openings in patrol paths.

a really fun mission! except for the pitch-black spider nest below the sewers, which was very rough on my nerves. thankfully it was optional, even though i didnt realise that until it was too late — note for other arachnophobes: stay away from the hole that is in the room in the sewers with a large spider. you dont need to go down there unless you want 100% loot. there are three or four other spiders around the library itself, but they can be either bypassed or dealt with from a distance.

Repeat after me: pitch-black places are bad for gameplay. Players don't like pitch-black places. Pitch-black places add nothing to the gameplay, just irritate the player. Don't use pitch-black places. Pitch-black places are BAD. Refrain from using bad things and prefer good ones.

The most difficult thing to find was that dragon-themed book

Many thanks to Angder and the beta testers for this marvellous fan mission. Thoroughly enjoyed exploring the ruined library and its many interesting nooks and crannies. My rating: 9/10.

    1) It's an optional area that is not mandatory to explore.
    2)

A wise taffer always uses flairs
To light up the pitch-black spider lairs

You should not go in without your 36 pieces of flair.

I'mma go in with so much FLAIR the spiders will all join up with me into a huge Eurovision dance number 🌈🌟🎉

The pitch dark section was awesome! If a mission has to have one of those, this is definitely the perfect way to do it.
The rest of the mission was super enjoyable as well! Thank you for making it.

Angder should completely ignore this (as usual) cringe take. More than enough flares were provided to make it through the section and it actually gave flares a purpose in Thief for a change.
The tense spider scene was actually my favorite part so far, though I was worried before going in. But it was relatively small and limited and had more bark than bite. It was a great section and made for some unsettling spider action.

Also, I found the dragon book almost immediately upon entering the room. 0/2. Bad form.

Finished it up. Excellent mission! I loved all the lore and how big it made the world seem. Some very funny and clever readables, I enjoyed them all.
Great gameplay, multiple ways into every area. Great environmental storytelling as well.
Excellent work, I look forward to another.

I actually wish more missions utilized pitch black shadows, there's some potential there, either for horror or just disorientation purposes.

I don't like such pitch-black areas and have just given it up, exactly because of this darkness, and because of not finding a reliable way out of the depths any more. May others have fun with this mission - I won't.

So reload a save and just don't go there. There is really no reason to go down there unless you are determined to get 100% of the loot.

The key down there suggests something else. And I don't have to play and like every mission out there. I don't say it's bad, just that I personally don't like it. If you don't want me writing that, prevent positive remarks like the one from zomfg1234 as well.

You don't have to play and like any mission. Just saying that the pitch black area is optional. If you liked the other bits, you could reload from the start and just not go there since it's not required to complete the mission.

I just finished Great Mission!! The first time I went down into the darkness I only had 8 flares and I did not get very far. I explored the rest of the mission and found all the objectives and more flares ended up with 20 or so. I then went down there again and it was not too bad I don't know what all is down there I found some more loot and ended the mission!!

Thank you for a few great hours!!!

There's another copy elsewhere of the vampire key in the pitch black area, no need to go there except full loot.

Many thanks to the author, who was right - the undead aren't that bad, nothing like the bonehoard.
