    Thief 5 Teaser

I was watching a YT video of 15 upcoming Stealth Games. Since I've always been a Thief fan, I wondered... and...sure enough, there was a teaser for Thief 5.

FF the timeline to 16:10. The thing is made entirely of Thief 4 in-game capture. I drilled down a bit and found articles saying Eidos Montreal was totally focused on Assassin's Creed and "had no time
to spend on developing a new Thief Game from the ground up." Translation: We've found the Golden Goose and are gonna squeeze it til it honks.

That said, Square Enix is selling off Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain, and more than 50 other back-catalogue games to Sweden-based Embracer Read the entire ARTICLE

While Eidos claims that titles like Thief4 aren't worth the investment, they also say it contributed to their "favorable" annual profit. ARTICLE

I also ran across an article that hinted at orchestrating a deal to bring Stephen Russell back as the voice of Garrett. But the source info is somewhat unreliable.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I'm gonna look into it as soon as I can, and the family (in-law) drama dies down. Ugh, I hate drama!

    I'm not holding my breath.

They need to leave Thief alone, forever.

After Thief 4 I dont need a Thief 5. They should just leave it be.
Im really surprised about the news of a "The witcher Remake". Is this for real?

I think this is just a case of a random youtube channel manufacturing news that isn't real. If there was a new Thief game in the works, there'd be way more coverage and press.

i guess i am going to have to clear the record once again "thief reboot is not thief 4" so no thief 5 please stop destroying the correct titles to thief games,i will also be so nice as to list game titles

thief the dark project = 1
thief the metal age = 2
    thief deadly shadows = 3

    thief reboot = 1

    have a nice day everyone

Too many people referred to it as "Thorf" for me to forget that. Sorry.

I think new Thief will be complete reboot but it will have some entitlement like, for example, Thief: Writhing darkness or Fallen sanctum...

None of the links are YT except the first one. The others are industry letters.

I was mainly referring to the first link, which is from a site that has no affiliation whatsoever with Eidos or Embracer Group. They're just just trying to gain a few clicks with no credible evidence to back up their claim. We really shouldn't even consider it to be a Thief 5 trailer, because there's no actual Thief 5 footage in it, or any statements or facts about the game that are verified.

Not sure what exactly you mean by "industry letters" but those last 2 links contain old news that is fairly well known around here.

Gee, I feel like I'm in an old folks' home, sitting with a bunch of grumps. Well, whatdya expect from a bunch still embracing a 50-year-old game.

That's fair, we're old! Still fun to speculate sometimes though.

I don't understand what's the point of this thread to be honest. There's quite literally 0 information on Thief 5, there has been no teaser, nothing. Some garbage channel uploaded the low quality version of Thi4f and called it as something else, does it warrant the existence of its own thread? No. I suppose it's frustrating to me because the name implies there's a piece of information, where in fact nothing like that exists whatsoever.

At this point I'd expect Beyond Good and Evil 2 to come out before Thief 5.

Tomb raider and Deus Ex are in production. Question is who would produce Thief 5, Eidos Montreal or somebody else?

I sincerely doubt Thief will ever get to have a new AAA entry. Thi4f was a flop that tainted the brand, but what's even more important is that the genre itself is not profitable. Every major stealth game today focuses more on action, and what Thief is known for: great audio propagation, very little focus on combat, extremely immersive world, etc. That is not how games are made today. These aspects are often poor or non existent now. You have to consider that far more marketable type of games can sink companies, nobody will make anything like Thief again (with the AAA budget I mean). Embracer has the rights, but that's only because it came in the Square Enix bundle, not because they actually care or want to make more Thief.

Well, that is another problem because Thief 2014 was called Thief 4 by pretty much everyone except the devs themselves, so if you make actual Thief 4, it would be extremely confusing and would collide with everyone's already ingrained thoughts. What do you mean Thief 4 is coming out? It came out in 2014 - is what would an average gamer say. That's hell for marketing. But then if you make another Thief, you definitely want to have a follow-up on the trilogy, not the reboot, so you can't call it Thief 5 either, it's not a sequel to (unofficial) 4. I mean, the devs and the publisher really fucked it up with the whole reboot but not really thing.

The next Thief would have to be named Thief: something, like with God of War: Ragnarok. It's technically GoW5, but also GoW2 based on their own new vision as to what that series should be. Hence you won't see God of War title with any number ever again. The same would happen to Thief, if it was to be made. Things like that is why I think the series won't be resurrected ever again. Too much stuff that went wrong, and too much stuff that is too difficult to execute and won't bring big returns. Fanmissions are more than enough for me, so I don't mind.

Surely it is common practise to give the latest entry in a franchise a working title that ends with the installment number, irrespective of how the latest installment ends up fitting (or not fitting) within the previous installments' timelines / stories?

For example, don't they initially use the working title James Bond #n for the next James Bond film. Even if, as with Casino Royale, it ends up being a reboot and not James Bond #23.

So anyway, you should interpret Thief 5 as meaning the 5th game made in the overall Thief franchise, and not necessarily as intending to mean the 4th direct sequel to the first game.

Also, while Thief 2014 was a reboot and not a direct sequel, you could just about call it a continuation of earlier Thief as it does continue the storylines (a little bit).

Even though it is set in a new "cycle" of the city decades or centuries later, you can learn through historical documents that (for example) Edwina Moira, after losing her husband and going a little mad for a while, later founded the Moira Asylum. A place that the original Garrett spent time in as an inmate, and for some reason his mechanical eye was left behind there.

We can also learn that the Hammerite and Keeper Orders declined, and all that is left are old ruins of their former buildings.

So Thief 2014 does not represent a complete severance from the characters / stories of the originals.

Who knows if Thief 5 (if it ever appears) will also maintain some level of continuity with the earlier games. And so the 5 could represent both the 5th installment in the Thief IP franchise, as well as the 5th game to have some level of continuity with the original characters / events.

What I foresee some day is some kind of spiritual successor to Thief, along the lines of Dishonored but with more stealth and thievery emphasis.

    Cutpurse 2: The Metal Era
    Cutpurse 3: Pernicious Gloom
