Thief: Deadly Shadows 20th Anniversary Contest - May 25, 2023

The 20th anniversary of Thief: Deadly Shadows (well, the North American release anyway) is exactly a year from today (May 25, 2024), and we are announcing the official start of the contest NOW!
We are doing things differently this year for a few reasons: Deadly Shadows' editing tools are tough to get into so we thought it would be a good idea to open the competition to Thief 1 and 2 as well by providing contestants with an optional pack of textures and sounds from the game. This means that this contest is open to Thief 1, Thief 2, Deadly Shadows as well as The Dark Mod!

Starting today, you have exactly one year to build a mission for Thief 1, 2, Deadly Shadows or The Dark Mod in the style of Deadly Shadows. Please read the detailed rules below. This year-long building period also includes beta-testing, so manage it carefully!

    Rules:
    - The mission(s) can be for Thief 1, Thief 2, Deadly Shadows or The Dark Mod.
    - Collaborations are allowed.
    - Contestants can use any custom resource they want and are not limited to the Deadly Shadows resource pack.
    - Contestants can submit more than one mission.
    - Contestants can enter anonymously.
    - The mission(s) can be of any size.

    Dromed Startpack:
Brethren has kindly created a Dromed Startpack which is a mission with some basic stuff already set up for you to save time, especially for newer authors. Using this is allowed, as is the importing of small multibrushes (think small templates as opposed to large areas from an unreleased map). However, starting from an abandoned map or importing large areas from other maps is not allowed. Naturally this is on the honor system as we have no way of validating.

    Optional Resource Pack:
Here is a Resource Pack that contains the following:
    - Original Textures (in .dds format, their filenames are likely too long for DromEd so you should rename them)
    - Original Ambient Sounds
    - Original Voicesets (unedited and without schemas)
    - Esse's TDS-Inspired City Watch Guards
    - Esse's TDS Object Textures
    - Purgator's TDS City Watch Guards
    - Thief 1 Hammer Vox for Thief 2 (basically a port of the three Hammerite voices from T1 with their corresponding schemas, use this if you want the original Hammerites in Thief 2)
    - TDS Hammer Vox (Hammerites 1, 2 and 3 from TDS with their corresponding schemas)
    - TDS Pagan Vox (Pagans 1, 2, 3 and 4 from TDS with their corresponding schemas)
Note that TDM entries are forbidden to use this as per TDM rules.

    Mission themes and contents:
There is no requirement from a theme or story viewpoint, however contestants might consider that many players may expect or prefer missions to be celebratory of Thief: Deadly Shadows in this respect: castles, manors, museums, ruins inhabited by Pagans and the like, with a balance of magic versus technology. This is entirely up to the authors, though, to follow or not - it is just mentioned here as an FYI and, while individual voters may of course choose to vote higher or lower based on this on their own, it will not be a criteria used explicitly in voting or scoring.

Deadline: May 25th, 2024 at 23:59 Pacific Time.
Here is a countdown timer in case you aren't sure.

    Submission:
Please submit your missions to Yandros or skacky through private messaging or by sending an email to wearytaffer[at]gmail[dot]com or skacky2002[at]yahoo[dot]fr and put a subject for your email so we don't miss it/discard it (e.g. "Thief: Deadly Shadows Anniversary submission").
The archive must be named TDS20AC_yourmissionname.zip. Make sure your missions are tested before submitting them!

    Voting period:
The voting period will start on June 1st 2024 and end on September 1st 2024. Results will then be announced along with the unveiling of the identities of potential anonymous entrants, as well as the publishing of voters’ comments.

    Posting Screenshots:
There is a dedicated thread for sharing screenshots and updates here: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152225

    Happy DromEding, T3Eding and/or Radianting!

    - skacky & Yandros

Any chance to consider TDM missions for this contest? TDM development story is very intertwined with this game and if contestants are already able to make maps in other games it kind of makes sense to me.

This is really exciting. I've never played TDS fan missions so I'll try out a few over the year to prepare for the contest!

Great to see this, thanks skacky/Yandros. One other idea for authors - The TDS City mission released by Child of Karras in 2009 could work as a good base for new authors (or veterans even) for their missions. The architecture of course couldn't be used, but there are models/textures/objects/sounds all set up in an editing environment, including a gamesys. I know CoK has openly stated in the past that the mission can be used as a base for anyone's Thief related projects.

If it's to be in the style of TDS we expect to see the use of climbing gloves rather than rope arrows and of course only a couple of walls within the whole map where you can use them.

@ TDS City mission by Child of Karras. It's a faithful rebuild of the TDS city (Southquater, Stonemarket, Docks) but it was made prior to Newdark so are a number of bugs including that can mantle out of the map in 100's of locations, but Bad Hangover & Pestis Cruenta which were contest missions that used TDS City mission as a base were made after Newdark was released and are very much better maps to work with as most if not all the Newmantle issues were fixed in those maps.

The architecture in all of the maps you mentioned though is irrelevant, because it can't be used for the contest. You'd mainly use it for the assets and resources.

As an aside - I'm guessing any level with swimmable water will be disqualified from the contest.

Not sure if this request by Wellingtoncrab was noticed by the organizers and is under consideration, but if it does not go ahead on this occasion an idea for a future contest could be to have a Thief vs TDM contest. There's enough mappers from both games to give us an exciting range of FMs.

Brethren, looks like the Southquarter link to your Starterpack is no longer working.

The suggestion hasn't been unnoticed, in fact the competition is now open to TDM as well after some discussion.
As for a Thief vs TDM contest, I'm not a fan because it implies there is a competition between the two communities and there isn't.

I understand your sentiment but would people really view it as a competition between the communities vying to prove who is better?

Yeah your probably right some would and may even keep mentioning the fact for some years to come, but I would like to think the most people don't view the 2 games as competitors rather than siblings, albeit with a bit of friendly rivalry. I'm just grateful to those who took on the massive commitment 10+ years ago to build the Dark Radiant and all the models, scripts, texture etc that has allowed so many talented author to give us another 200+ missions.

Hey thanks! I dropped a note on the TDM forums directing folks to this thread for the contest details. I realize I probably should have checked that that was ok with the organizers before I did that. If it’s an issue apologies and I can take the thread down.

I looking forward to (hopefully) participating!

Best thief 2014 review : "Thiaf (2014) - this game wouldn't be worth your money even if it shipped with a brewery and a brothel."

If you’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of T3 it would seem a bit odd not to allow a T3 entry.

Don’t worry though it is highly unlikely there will be many if any T3 missions, not only is the editor even more of a nightmare to work with than Dromed, Savar has retired (well he did say Shadows of Death was his last ever mission) and I doubt if Adsk1 would enter the contest. As for seeing a T3 mission from a newbie, I wish them the best of luck as there is hardly any T3 editing advise out there with all the authors from 20 years ago having moved on.

Can't wait to see and play what comes down the pipe for this contest! Here's hoping some T3 missions are added in. I know the editor is a bit finicky to work with, but it wouldn't feel like a T3 contest without some T3 submissions.

i am hoping for storylines that are post thief 3 in thief 2 newdark fan mission

also would be nice to get a storyline about artemus as he died in thief 3 and he was really the mentor of garrett and should never be forgotten

also a story line about the merlock should be a must as everyone loved them in thief 3 and all true thief fan freed the one in that tiny jail

also a storyline showing the golden child post thief 2 = main enemy in thief 4 if it would have came out

Fixed the broken link to the DromEd Startpack, thanks to m_h for uploading it. The link in the OP is a Google Drive mirror.

Hope ya'll amazing Fan Mission makers can make something fantastic, I can't wait! I always love these contests, even the "bad" (or poorly voted) ones have a charm.
