The color of the cover sums up the game pretty well. Dull, nonsensical, pretentious.
It's a good looking cover! I liked the aesthetic of T4 a lot. If we're ranking the boxart of the series I'd go T1 > T4 > T2 > T3.
I will say I liked the aesthetic of T4 as in the game itself. Those artists and world builders did a great job, they can't be blamed. I liked the feel of the city hub and many of the missions. The problem was the gameplay and of course the horrendous story. But if we are going by what a modern Thief should have looked like following Thief 3, I think visually they nailed it. It had the dark moody atmosphere of the previous Thief games. Clocktowers, a large sprawling city, mist and shadowed corners everywhere to lurk in. Great lighting. It was all very well done especially for 2014. I just wish they'd take another shot at a Thief game, because visually it was fantastic. This time just give free to choose level approach like the first games had, an actually good story, and gameplay which again is more similar to the first game (example: rope arrows in any wood surface like previous games). There's no reason why the magic of the first Thief games couldn't be brought to a modern game engine. It just needs to be lead by devs who enjoyed the originals. Not some new gen game designers as was sadly the case ;0
It's boring.
Well, it's not bad. The aesthetics of Thief 2014 is my least complaint. The game world and design is actually pretty nice.
The game certainly looks fantastic in many ways. In some ways, and it's not the fault of T4 designers, the video game industry goes a bit too far with visual technology to the point where it becomes very overwhelming and difficult to look at for long periods of time. Maybe I'm just a simpleton though.
T1/TG and T2 are pretty simple graphically compared to newer games but left so much to the imagination, and the story/gameplay/audio made up for any lack of visual appeal. Some of the oddities of the first couple of games added an entertaining quality like crate stacking. Part of my personal dislike might be age related too. As I get older the less I like increasingly higher visual qualities. I mean I get excited about film grain and fuzzy 35mm slides from the 60's and 70's over insanely sharp modern images.
To me T1/TG/T2 are the pre-WWII Lionel stamped steel O gauge train sets with simple detail and few colors which leave a lot to imagination and don't distract from task at hand: running freight. I didn't like Lionel trains when I was younger and always looked toward trains that were more modern and much higher detail but these days I get the fascination with the old simpler machines. You might even compare earlier Thief games to old simple LEGO sets vs. new Thief games and new LEGO sets. The newer ones are cool to look at but are they more fun to play with on the floor of your bedroom?
That pretty much sums up the issues with AAA games these days. They're all done with the same cookie cutter formula which more or less guarantees you a return for your production costs. Unfortunately happens with everything commercially successful.
TBH, I hardly care about graphics anymore. On the contrary, I even think they can get in your way, because, with that amount of detail, it's often hard to focus on interactive items in the game world. AND, it's also pretty ridiculous that about 90% of games development time involves graphics. Same with the size of current games. 95% for texture data. And, for what? For a shiny surface of something really bland and boring.
Agreed.
One game/simulator where graphics and realism are welcomed is the latest MS flight sim. If the stock graphics of an area you fly around most often aren't good enough for you there are add on packs to add more detail. Overall I enjoy high detail in flight sims because it makes sense for a lot of reasons. My other favorite game, GTAV, is heavy on graphics but not so much that it hurts the eyes. In fact I love hanging out in game and just looking around at all the crazy stuff they put in the game.
Yeah, graphics can be a lovely thing. But, it's by far not the most important for me, as it is for many these days.
And, true, a flight simulator with bad graphics kind of defeats the purpose.
It looks awful, it's a ad calling for awareness of subway thiefs with kleptomania who snatches smartphone.

How can the colour be dull and pretentious?
For me, it's just a cover, but I think it's a pretty good one! It's simple, it's stylish, it stands out without trying too much. Perhaps it's a bit too simple, but all in all, I can't find anything negative to say about the cover. If only the same applied to the actual game, but oh well.
