    TG FM: A Thief's Training [10 March 2024]

I am very pleased to announce the release of my first FM - A Thief's Training (for Thief Gold).

    Briefing:

Cutty must be feeling generous, or guilty, as he threw me a bone in lieu of any actual work. It seems Sigurd and Radbod, two of the Downwinders’ best, have recently gone rogue. Word on the street is they have a new employer, unlikely a warden but definitely someone with deep pockets. Cutty tells me they were spotted last night checking into the Hoofed Liar, a dilapidated inn located in Chapelshade, a half-abandoned hamlet on the outskirts of the City.

Normally I would look down on poaching work from others, but the rent is due, and Cutty has nothing else coming my way. It’s still daylight, but I will have to leave now if I have any chance of cutting Sigurd and Radbod off before they leave that inn. If I’m lucky, they might still be sleeping, which will give me a chance to figure out where they’re headed.

On the bright side, at least whatever I find is mine, that is, if there is anything to find, and if I can get away with it...

    Beta-testers:

    - DirkBogan
    - Jayrude
    - LoudEmitter
    - marbleman
    - Walder

    Notes:

    - This mission is for Thief Gold, it will not work if you load it in Thief 2.
    - This mission mostly uses stock resources. It is intended to be an homage to The Dark Project. The mission should therefore be played without "upgraded" texture and object packs.
    - This mission is not compatible with the Thief Enhancement Pack. Playing it with the Enhancement Pack enabled can cause numerous clipping object and missing texture errors.
    - NewDark 1.27 or later is required.

    just what I needed today!
this one seems small, but I keep finding new places - I think I missed a couple things (the astrologist's window and something hidden in tetbert's tomb) but I'm soldiering on!

two small things to correct if you do a revision: the release date is set to March 10, 2023 (an easy fix in AngelLoader, but confusing at first) and the ladders in the sewer tend to throw me backwards if I climb to the top then mantle

after about 90 minutes of exploration I completed the last objective and headed out - only to realize I missed half the loot!
I did find a couple bugs: the doorknob on the office of the elder doesn't move when being lockpicked, and I never got Objective Complete notifications.
both minor, still had a lot of fun exploring; really not sure how I missed so much loot on normal! I fulfilled the last will & testament, found the rowdy keeper's gambling closet, checked the high shelves in the restricted library...

Quite a lot of loot is in secrets so once you start finding more of those, your loot total will go up!

Regarding sliding door handles, this is a stock thing with sliding doors, usually they don't have handles so I probably should have removed the handles or added tweq settings. Also I think objective complete sounds are added by tfix but are not in Thief Gold by default.

Congratulations on the release. So far I'm really enjoying it.
However, I have one problem: I turned the busts exactly according to the instructions in the scroll, but nothing seems to happen. I also tried multiple other combinations. Do I also need to do something else to open the gate?

In the cloisters? garden?.....there is a hexagonal grill and down below you can see a tomb and a pathway leading to and from it.....how do I get down to that place?,I think its the only place I have not been to....I only have the Medallion to find..is it down there?..if not where can I find that?

edit...I missed yet another door in the restricted library so have found what I was looking for

the correct sequence for the heads should raise the gate to the library...nothing else needed...one pair of heads do not need to be turned, one pair are both facing away from each other and the last pair only one needs to be turned away

I have just gone back in to game and gone to the heads and turned one or two and the gate lowered to closed, and I could not open it again....maybe you have done it a few times and that's why its failing to work now....try loading a save before there again and redo the puzzle?

via the restricted library; there is an out of the way door to the Interpreter's Tower room, and from there another easily missed door

Eventually solved the puzzle with the heads by frobbing them randomly, but the correct way to do it is mentioned in Snake's post below.

Regarding the statue head puzzle, there is unfortunately an issue with this which was also raised during testing.

There is a slight frob delay on the statue heads and this can sometimes result in a player inadvertently frobbing the statue head twice but it only moves once and therefore the statue head will appear to be in the position you need it to be to open the gate but the engine recognises the frobs only and reads it as being in the wrong position.

Therefore if you have an issue with the gate not opening but you are certain you’ve figured out the correct combination, then just experiment with turning the relevant statue heads the opposite way until the gate opens.

Spoiler below for the correct head positions if you need to be certain:

1 - Third Keeper Mayar and First Keeper Riquin should be facing each other (they don’t need to be frobbed at all)

2 - Interpeter Verderosa should be facing away from First Keeper Modrian, so only the Verderosa statue head should be frobbed to face away

3 - Translator Columb and Interpreter Sadrilde should be facing away from each other, so both statue heads should be frobbed to face away from each other.

The secrets are well hidden in this FM: I have found only one and only because I knew that it is there somewhere (gambling "room").
