    Thief Mod List

Here you can find the list of (hopefully) all Thief mods, and instructions on how to load them properly in the modern Thief environment.

    General Note

To ensure everything works as intended, you need to patch your game with TFix or T2Fix first (the full patchers come with a few integrated mods that are not available anywhere else), then use the included modmanager (Dark modmanager, dmm.exe) to load mods (install mod archives button, point it at the downloaded zip with the mod and open it, then activate, and apply changes). The most recent mods should already be in the proper format to allow this, older ones however usually aren't, in that case the correct install instructions are provided here right after the short mod description. If they are, they are to be followed to the letter (ignoring everything the original mod author may have instructed, especially on ModDB), else there will be issues (ranging from the mod not working up to having to reinstall your game completely).

    Enhanced resources

    • Thief Enhancement Pack 2.0 (HD textures and objects, aims to be as close to vanilla as possible. T1/TG support is not complete, you can supplement it with the TG ESRGAN pack, just make sure EP2 has higher priority)
    • Necro Age 2.3 (HD textures and objects, close to vanilla, but darker)
    • T2X Necro Age (T2X HD textures, close to vanilla, but darker, download the zip and LOAD IT AS A FAN MISSION using FMsel or any other modern fan mission loader)
    • Thief Object Enhancement Pack (hires objects, make sure this has lower priority than EP2, NecroAge or other HD texture packs)
    • Thief Gold ESRGAN Pack (HD textures, AI upscaled, to install, extract the USERMODS folder from the zip to your MODS folder, rename it to ESRGAN and use dmm.exe to activate. do the same with any ESRGAN addon, name the addon mod folder accordingly, Paintings etc, give the extra bits higher priority than the base ESRGAN pack, but lower than EP2)
    • Thief II ESRGAN Pack (HD textures, AI upscaled, to install, extract the USERMODS folder from the zip to your MODS folder, rename it to ESRGAN and use dmm.exe to activate)
    • Thief Gold HD Texture Mod (custom HD textures, modified maps and game mechanics, to install, open the downloaded hdmod installer exe with 7zip, and extract the hdmod folder into your MODS folder. use dmm.exe to activate. if you want dynamic skies, enable the TFix version)
    • Thief 2 HD Texture Mod (custom HD textures, modified maps and game mechanics, to install, open the downloaded hdmod installer exe with 7zip, and extract the hdmod folder into your MODS folder. use dmm.exe to activate. if you want dynamic skies, enable the T2Fix version)
    • T2X HD Texture Mod (custom HD textures, download the 7zip version and LOAD IT AS A FAN MISSION using FMsel or any other modern fan mission loader. if you want the latest bugfixes, get all the mis files from the T2X base package and bin files from the obj folder, and overwrite those in the T2XHD folder and its obj folder)
    • Thief I + II Sound effects enhancement pack (enhanced sounds, cleaner and more detailed)
    • Gecko's HQ Water Mod Pack (to install, create a HQWater\FAM\Waterhw folder in your MODS folder and extract all the blin files from the archive there, use dmm.exe to activate)
    • TG and T2 Carry Body mod (higher poly meshes and proper textures for carried bodies, to install, extract the CarryBody folder from the zip to your MODS folder, use dmm.exe to activate. if you patched your game with TFix/T2Fix full, you already have this mod installed)
    • Thief Gold movies, filtered and resized (to install, create a Cutscenes\movies folder in your MODS folder and move all the new avi files there, use dmm.exe to activate)
    • Thief 2 Refiltered Movies v1 (to install, create a Cutscenes\movies folder in your MODS folder and move all the new avi files there, use dmm.exe to activate)
    • Thief Gold 60 FPS Video Pack (to install, create a Cutscenes\movies folder in your MODS folder and move all the new avi files there, use dmm.exe to activate)
    • Thief 2 30 & 60 FPS Video Pack (to install, create a Cutscenes\movies folder in your MODS folder and move all the new avi files there, use dmm.exe to activate)

    Tweaks and additions

    Subtitles and translations

    Modmanager gui, standard TFix mod loadout, with EP2 and ESRGAN texture packs added, and the fan mission dml fixes paused;

I pretty sure the ultimate difficulty mods do not work with Newdark, certainly not T2 ultimate difficulty one, IIRC the only one that works still is Gecko's version of the T1 ultimate mod that should still work with Gecko’s HD mod.

I also listed a few other mods in my Cheats, Mods and Engine Exploits thread, such as X-Raydar mod, Fairy Lights, Auto key mod.

PS. Does Gold to Dark mod still work with Newdark? Feeling it doesn't.

Dark doesn't really care about the resources that are being loaded, so whatever just changes those (crf, mis, gam) will be ok. so even the old ultimate difficulty mods should still work, but you have to have vanilla maps to go along with them (you cannot separate the overhauled maps from the overhauled gamesys, so if you load the difficulty mod on top of that you will override the overhauled gamesys, causing issues). warnings added. same goes for Gold to Dark - if you apply it and then install TFix full or TFix lite, everything should be ok, lite will just pop the ND exe in together with a bunch of dmls, and full will just think you have T1 and patch everything accordingly.

added a bunch of mods (those that seem ready to go) from your post, thanks.

also, I have given up on the idea of making all the Thief mods mod manager ready (proper modern mod format is a zip/7zip archive, all the modded resources right in it, no extra folders. ideally, all mod authors should convert their already existing mods to use this, but good luck trying to contact them all, can't even reach Gecko so we could untangle the gordian knot of his hd mods which currently will nuke a TFixed/T2fixed install into stone age if their own installers are used), so whatever, we'll see how many support requests we'll get ("hey this mod does not work" "yes, you have to move the modded files from the extra folder into its root folder" and similar).

and if manual edits are needed to be able to use the mod (or the mod is just a set of instructions on how to modify the files), then it doesn't qualify as a mod. lets not set the bar too low.

I've read a number of threads over the years that say the ultimate difficulty mod no longer works, here's a thread from 2015. Maybe others who know about this mod can confirm.

And yes you could never use the ultimate difficulty mod with FM's, it only worked with the OM's

yes, and my explanation can be found in the very same thread - to make it short, you need to use the difficulty mods with vanilla original missions, and nothing else, and then they will work properly.

just for the record, right now it is still not possible to convert the difficulty mods into dml, so unless our mysterious feathery friend swoops down from a tree and drops a chunk of cheese unexpectedly..

//descriptions added where necessary, should finally clear all the EP2/NecroAge/hdmod confusion, assuming the user lands here and actually bothers to read them.

So it's TFix and T2Fix that causes the ultimate mods to break, always thought it was Newdark, my bad.

OP with inserted comments looks good.

I'm sure there are a few more mods out there, hopefully others can point the way.

As for making a dml alternative to ultimate difficulty mod I had this conversation with Glypher some time back, IIRC he said it maybe possible with a few alterations but this is not something he is likely to do any time soon. But if anyone was ever to make such a ultimate difficulty dml it should be one that works for FM's as well as OM's, now that would be awesome.

it would be possible to do with some TFix/T2Fix gamesys alterations (add the required archetypes, and let them sleep until a dml activates them), but that would mean no FM compatibility. not sure whether that's worth doing, but maybe I'll ask Jax64, if he's ok to modify the T2 gamesys (so both TFix and T2Fix would add the required changes) then maybe.

they do not break, they are just not loaded, as they are not compatible with the modern Thief environment. this is intentional, if they were to load, they would break things.

//removed T2 water, it's the old DDFix package which will not work without proper mtls files. that same mod but working is included in both TFix and T2Fix, so no problem. if some of the mods linked in the first post have similar issues (not working without extensive rework), let me know.

//EP1 too, fixed build already included in the patchers. and bit the bullet and checked all the linked mods, and provided proper install instructions wherever necessary. currently, 12/25 mods are mod manager ready, not great, not terrible (whoever knows the authors and is willing to go poke them to update their stuff is welcome to do so). not going to touch the translations, I have the SS2 CZ translation to take care of if I feel like self harm.

This is looking rather good. It should prove to be an easily digestible index for anyone wanting a modded Thief experience at a glance and should hopefully dispel some misconceptions on how to install certain mods.

Regarding the Ultimate Difficulty Mod, the DML limitations do make implementing it as a dbmod problematic, as it heavily relies on receptrons with custom targets. However, it is possible to work around these issues. I've put together a universal conversion of it that ought to do this.

speak of the devil - nice. links to the old difficulty mods removed and the link to the new one added. too bad we don't have any way of tracking download counts, would be quite interesting to see how popular is this going to be.

so I lied - it's actually just 4 people. some already responded (Gecko being one those who did, so hopefully easy to load hmod builds soonish).
