I think Phil Collins in general has not aged well.

His solo career and frontmanship with Genesis had its ups and downs, but the man was/is a solid drummer. There's some incredible work from the rhythm section around the time when Peter Gabriel was singing about what he likes in your wardrobe and the apocalypse coming to town in 9/8 time.

Well I don't think he was as shit as Tony Banks' choices in synth tone and noodling were, at any rate.

I thought this was a fun, sharing kind of thread, not a cynical sniping exercise.

also this, just because it's a boost, if not relevant

    Don't forget these guys Sulphur:

That's the fusion band Brand X. They were originally Island Records' session band whose drummer left when they got serious about recording their own music. Phil was recruited and played on their first two albums before he had to leave to tour with Genesis. They are both great fusion records. Here is a taste of the first:

He did join them one more time for an album in 1979. This is one of Phil's songs from that album. He was trying to move the band toward a Weather Report sound at that point to improve their commercial fortunes and you can clearly hear the influence:

I am still a fan of 1970s Genesis, from Nursery Cryme through Wind and Wuthering especially, and Duke. It's a bit worn out to me now, but only because I've listened to it many times. On the whole, I like Peter Gabriel's solo output better than Phil's. Phil's first album Face Value still holds up for me, not because of the painfully overplayed In The Air Tonight, but for a half dozen deep tracks. I remember liking Both Sides, which was a soft, intimate album with a lot of introspective lyrics that Phil recorded entirely by himself. There's no horns on it; he learned to play the bagpipes for that one, and they give it a different sound and mood. I also remember liking the song Take Me Home, which was the same concept as ITAT but I liked it more. But the rest of his solo work is unmemorable to me. A lot of horn arrangements that sound overly hip, overuse of gated reverb and drum machines, too many sappy chords, too many songs about his breakups, self-indulgence.

Like him or not, one thing we can all agree on is that he hasn't aged well:

OK, I'll stop being Patrick Bateman. Too bad fett isn't with us anymore to weigh in on this important subject.

Hear hear! If you want to say that Collins sucks, you have to climb Mount Brand X and shout it from the peak.

And lots of us don't age well. But just getting to get old is a triumph in itself. Phil's still having a grand time doing it.

This whole forum is a cynical sniping exercise, lol. A bitter tribute to a dead studio.

I never did check out Brand X before, so thanks for that, heywood. I like what I'm hearing, so I'll dip my toes in a bit. And I agree, Gabriel was always going to be a better songwriter than Collins, so his solo work's only got a few high points compared to, well, anything between Scratch and Up (Up has some remarkable duds, though, and I/O is... well, I haven't formed a coherent opinion on it yet, thanks to his approach to its mixes).

And no, Pyrian, this forum's what you want it to be. Sometimes it's what you said. Sometimes it's nicer. Most of the time, it's just crusty. <3

It was more of a cynical sniping exercise in its heyday compared to now.
