your opinion's on this idea for a future contest

i was think we lost some amazing fan mission authors, bbb, FreddyFox, Lady Jo, Lady Rowena, Naks and Zaccheus, on the Special Category:- In Memoriam

how would a contest be if the idea was the create a mission "in the style of one of the people that were lost"

for example i miss the amazing exploration of a bbb mission and wish someone would make missions in the stlye of his/ also lady rowena would be amazing, and also a branching idea would be to continue a mission from a series they did furthering the story like best example would be naks snobs series i love the first 2 in the series but we never got a third in the series = at the end of part 2 of snob you can find naks in her house working on snobs 3 but we lost her and never got to play it, would be epic if someone could pick up on all series from past authors and make more, not remakes but the next part inn the series, how do you all feel about the idea's

either a mission in the style of or a continuation of a series never finished

cant wait to see what you all reply

If someone takes inspiration from another's work that would be one thing but to have a competition with the theme of imitating another's style seems a bit disrespectful in my opinion, especially if you want to expand on one of their stories without their permission (which you can't get from those no longer with us).

Finding "in memoriam" easter eggs in levels makes playing those levels more touching though.

I agree wholeheartedly with Emerald Wolf.

Let's leave those missions as they are as a memory to the authors.

I think it could be fun to have people sign up to imitate others and have their work imitated. e.g., everyone who wants to participate throws their name in, then there is a drawing and they get their "assignment" of who to mimic.

But I don't like the idea of mimicking authors who didn't agree to be mimmicked.

The downside of my suggestion is that it limits to pool to only well-known authors. An alternative would be to let well-known authors agree to allow their style to be mimicked (without necessarily agreeing to participate in the contest), and then anyone who wants to participate in the contest can make a mission in one of those agreeing authors' styles.

my definition of in the style of seems different then the reply's i am reading

i was not talking about stealing anything already made by a pasted fan mission author, if you read my first post i said "in the style of" and it would be 100% new work done, as far as continuing a series of a lost fan mission author, wasn't that done for lady rowena's last map = was amazing, and i don't think people did anything but praise the work done

a way to remember/dedicate a mission to a past fan mission author seems to be a good thing, but i was just curious how people felt

I'd love to see more Purah-style missions being done, though to be fair many FM's we've gotten over the year fit the style (eg a few of the T1 anniversary missions, and Black Parade)

How about making a competition "in the style of", but not attempting to continue any series that our deceased community members started? That would be a great balance between appreciating those authors and keeping a respectful distance from memories and works.

Ticky, I agree with your point and think it's sort of a t2x approach. Tell a similar story, but from another perspective. Alluding to events from other FMs seems fair game, as long as the events from those FMs are shown as ancillary to the new FMs plot. Continuing a plot line from an FM is far less desirable. It can be done in a subtle way, but that is an art that some may not possess, or at least pull off without looking like a rip off artist. Thankfully, I cannot think of one FM that fully rips off someone else's work. I'm sure they exist, but I've not encountered one yet.

Continuation of an original plot from the OEM game is fine. Using someone else's plotline is a road that should be treaded upon lightly. Just an opinion. Having a contest to make similar FMs to well respected past FM creators is an OK idea. Mimicking an FM creator's style? Meh, that's something to pause on. Creating an extension of the beloved FMs? No.

Lady Rowena's last mission Home Sweet Home was 99% completed by Lady Rowena, but Yandros fixed a few things and made it ready for public release.

if it ever goes further please let me know as i feel i know the themes that suit a lot of there styles

for example bbb did amazing exploration missions where you traveled/lots of hidden spots for loot/gear, his best story in a fan mission i feel is Augustine's revenge, and three crowns, bbb did not worry about making the mission the best graphics so he was able to make a lot more area to explore then most authors, there is more but that is a gist of what he did

also i am a bit sad to see not many people request escape maps, i love those so much and haven't had one in years, weather breaking out of a jail/etc

and this post was just to see what people think of the idea's, this is not a post telling people to do anything considered wrong by forum standards = i dont want to be a bad guy for wondering about this topic and how others think

I think it's a nice idea. If I were gone I would love to see what people would make that would be in my style as a tribute.

I just wanted to state the same answer and it was dedicated to her and made very clear that she had build the mission almost to its finish.

I agree if there's a call for tribute FMs, it doesn't feel right to rank them.
It feels better being just a general call than a contest.

That's my take, I can see it the other way. But bringing it up at all, I like the idea of a more general "in the style of" open to any author ever for a contest, in which case it doesn't feel wrong to have a contest (even including representation of some authors that are gone) because it's not singling them out as a tribute, but it's just as one big FM community family that we're all in.

Also I'd really love to see an FM in the style of KFort because it's one of my favorite styles, and really no one else makes them like that, and this is my chance to maybe see (or make?) one!

speaking of kfort, omg the shadowjack needs to be added to more fan missions = play wicked relics if you got no idea what i mean and find the room in basement with a lot of doors and figure out how to open them all

I like playing contest missions that with rules like a specific theme or with space and area shape limitations. Those seem to produce some really wild and memorable missions.

    I agree with demagogue
Having it being some call or event to present tribute for beloved author is fine as long as it's not rated.

For contest, we must encourage creativity and the rating works to motivate author to push their ideas of design, narrative and gameplay to their best.
If it had to be authors inspired style only, better it be on a contestant's choice but tbh, I'm not sure if it's possible to easily mimick all authors styles.

Imitating the style of Lady Rowena is for example possible because she has a strong design personnality.
Now ask me about Lady Jo who was an important person in the French community but more in term of community management than Fan Mission (she did only one or two missions iirc and never alone)

As for the sense of respect, I also consider it rather respectful to mimick an author style, even gone.
As we all know nobody will do it on the purpose to do style appropriation or to mock them, but definitely an hommage for their legacy, even if the author doing the mimick do it badly - the intention matters the most for it.

Like Random_Taffer, if I had to die tomorrow, I would definitely be happy if some authors do Fan Missions that could have been mine, as it'd means my work inspires enough to worth a new contribution in my style.
(And I would wish good luck to the author doing so because my style has no specific visual hehe)

thank you so much firemage, you have the same thinking as i do when i made this post

its all about remembering how amazing the fan mission authors we lost truly are

my vote for future fan mission contest is

    1.escape
    2.traveling long distance/journey
    3.prequal to thief 1
    4.post thief 3
5.in the style of = can be anyone as i dont want to make people feel they have to pick authors we lost

Oh, I would love prequels to T1 or missions exploring events after T3. I also fancy murder mysteries, so I wouldn´t say no to these either.
