Thief 1 Mission: "Bloodstone Prison"... a Kung Fu Gecko production (Nov 24, 1999)

Whew. It's done. Finally. My second installment to the thief missions.

It's not gold material, but I hope you guys enjoy it. Please put all comments in this thread.

It's sort of a Cragscleft meets Return to Cathedral. Excellent for the sneaksie thief (you really don't need the holy waters, they're just to fall back on). And remember, I tried very hard to avoid any slash 'n dash. If you're stuck, think of what you've read...

Hope you have fun... just in time for American Thanksgiving holiday, and let's me enjoy it with my wife.

Thought I'd be the first one to say, "THANKS!" I just started playing it, and already it's pretty scarey. Very cool! Have to have a look around a little later, but it looks great from the start. I loved the letter... to the dudes wife... the story in the letter gets you going and gives it a surreal atmosphere. I think you'll get a lot of praise for this one.

Once again thanks, and keep them FM's coming.

WHOA! What a piece of art... and the environment sounds did'nt exactly smell either! GREAT! I have not finished this thing yet but I made it to the prison-area, very nice! I will try again later (damn hammer-haunts cut me down to bits) Anyways, very nice work on the lighting, and this warden seems to be a really nice guy, cant wait to meet him!

Kfgecko, this is a awesome - I repeat, awesome piece of work. Sounds great, the layout of the rooms is great (has a good flow to it), runs great on my machine (this is a great example of making a big castle and keeping polygons down by only showing parts of it as you go around it), AI's work well (with new props), lighting is great (especially liked when you steal the key off the dead priest - yet can do undetected), and just a lot of fun to play. Just one downside - put some more froggies in there! just teasin

People, your gonna love this one... and KF, Thanks for the level.

I'm glad that day one Bloodstone is being received mostly positively. I've gotten a couple instances where people had some trouble completing the mission because they didn't know what to do next...

I want as many people to have fun with it as possible, so what I wanna know, are you guys completing everything? What difficulty? Did the texts give you clues enough? Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, and unfortunately it's apparently gonna look quite dark for people with voodoo2 and low gamma monitors.

Woe... totally AWESOME!!! Haven't completed the goal yet... can't find Bandos' wife's brooch?! I think I killed the Jiggiwiddi, but took some life too.

Any clues or hints to get into the vault, or where the key is?

    Thanks again.

ps. All enemies dead, can't get into vault.

BTW, you did kill the Jiggiwiggi the way St Judel did, right?

    CLUES (SPOILERISH):

    - read the note at the vault again (warden or sebatin for key)
    - read the warden diary in his bedroom again (warden ain't gonna open it for you, but maybe sebastin?)
    - read sebastin's letter... he opened the safe because why?.... can you make the same situation happen again?

    Hidden clues: (highlight to see)

    .
    .
the hammer ghost in the chapel is sebastin
    .
    .
    .
pinch out his candle or water arrow it out
    .
    .
    .
follow his ghost to the warden's office safe!

kfgecko... you are the man... totally awesome! It's been a while since someone has put out a good SCAREY level. Goals complete.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't sure if that (hidden tip) was actually written in one of the letters or not?! But it does make sense. And the story line was great as well. I think I'm going back for another run. Now that the chill is off a bit. :O Definately SPOOKY. Loved it.

started playing it last night, so far I like what im seeing. your sounds and ambients are VERY well done and layed out naturaly to create an authenitic setting. You tapped into my fears with the haunts Ive only just gotten the hammer in the frog area, I hate frogs. your right about the darkness and the voodoo2 things. but hey, ill deal with it untill feb when I build my new system.

heres a question about how you built your rooms. there are many ways to do this but Id like your input.. rooms with multi brushes to create a "molding" effect. are you stacking brushes on top of each other or are you "laying" them up against the walls of the primary brush? I hope this makes sense, If you use the stacking way you can create this effect with 2 brushes for 1 molding, if you lay them against the way you need 5 brushes for this effect, Im not infront of my computer right now, and I havent had a chance to load you level into dromed yet, can you tell me which way you did this, that is if Im making any sense at this point..

    Mr. Kfgecko,

Thanks for the hint's above, I finished the level. Awesome is an understatement!

Played the level on Newbie, but went after the Hard, and Expert goals anyway.

There's a door in a room downstaris on the way from the main castle floor to the prison cells. None of the keys or lockpicks will open it. Intentional? Also, grabbed a couple of broadheads off the shelf, but they did not increase my broadhead inventory.

Did some sniper training on your frogs. Tough! Actually, once one is hit, the rest stop moving around as much and are easier to hit. And read the dead Hammer's book. Am I supposed to do something with the dead Hammer's hammer? St. Constantines Hammer?

Getting to the vault down the c*****r was a stroke! Who would have looked there for an entrance?

One thing I haven't figured out yet though, should I try this on Expert. After getting the "Humoungous Diamond", how do I get back up from the bottom floor? I've tried rope arrowing everything that looks like wood, and nothing sticks.

Another really dumb question that's been bugging me for awhile. Given the extraordinary talent pool of Hobbiests that write these FM's (Bloodstone, Lampfire Hills, Lord Edmund, Death of Garrett, etc., etc.)Howcome you people haven't been approached by LGS, Edios, etc., to do some part time programming and get paid for it? Perhaps it's just envy on my part. I'm an engineer too, but can't program my way out of a paper bag. DOS batch files were a challenge. Hey, I love this stuff. FM's have kept me playing Thief far longer than any other computer game ever. A labor of love because you enjoy doing it, and getting recognized for it is great. But the freebies might be a little sweeter if you were getting paid to help on Theif II, III, IV, Special Operations, Secret Missions, etc. Hope you're at least putting this on your Resume'.

    OK, off my soapbox.

Door to the prison? If you're talking about the door to cell block 2 from the south hall, then no, it can't be opened, cuz of the cave in from the tree root... (start from the south hall and try going down to cell block 2, you'll see what I mean).

    SPOILER!!!

To get back up from where you get the Humungous Diamond, check a flooded cell...

You don't know what to do with the hammer? Uh oh... read the book next to it again... then remember what you read in the Warden's diary... hint... you don't need any arrows at all to kill the Jiggiwiggi (Warden's ghost).

Wrich... not quite sure what you're talking about, but I probably used the 2 brush method. I try also to use the least number of brushes to create my effects...

Do you like the ceilings in the cathedral? :P
