    The Taffer Code v1.0

    -----BEGIN TAFFER CODE 1.0 -----
    1g+++2++3? H+++M+N++R+T++U+++Z++ G=L+O+P-Q=I+K= A+++ B+++ D++ X+++ J++

    ----- END TAFFER CODE 1.0 -----

    The Taffer Code, based on the legendary Geek Code (www.geekcode.com),
    provides a way for fans of the Thief series to display their own preferences
    on a variety of in-game matters that inspire debate in the Thief discussion
    forums (at www.ttlg.com and eidosinteractive.com). The Taffer Code also
    provides a quick and easy way to identify fellow Taffers whose tastes are
    similar to one's own.

    The code consists of capital letters, each signifying some aspect of life in
    the City or life in the discussion forums, followed by plusses or minuses
    that indicate one's degree of favor or disfavor. The letters, which are
    listed below along with an explanation of the range of views for each, are
    presented in a standard order and form suitable for inclusion in a signature.
    There should be no more than 78 characters per line.

    When Thief iii is released, the Taffer Code will be expanded appropriately
    and will then extend to three lines of information instead of two.

    Please send comments or suggestions for refinement to grundbegriff@ttlg.com !
    =========================================================================O
    In general, the range of favorable or unfavorable views is expressed in

    + I like it somewhat.
    = I'm indifferent to it.
    - Eww! Get it away!
    ? I have no opinion about it.

    These are the meanings of the pluses and minuses, unless otherwise noted.

    ++ Boo! Here's your wallet!
    + Ok, so they saw me once or twice. Still, I try!

    - I never play this way.

    loot, no alerted AI. "Master Thief": blackjack damage only, no
    damage to Garrett, collect all loot, no alerted AI.]

    ++ I'm the Perfect Thief! Ph34r m3!
    + So I blackjack sometimes. I'm still a Master Thief!

    - What a senseless waste of human effort!
    ? I've never tried to play in the Master or Perfect styles.

    Q [Quick Thief (aka "Mad Dash") - Play each mission as quickly as possible]

    + I save prior to Benny so I can replay his dialogue before moving on.
    = What's the big deal? He's just some irresponsible guard!
    - Drunken fool won't even *see* this fire arrow!

    + I use this occasionally.
    = I mostly ignore this.
    - I never use this.

    METAGAME================================O
    * What's your relationship with the multiplayer clans?
    C [Clan status: The discussion forums include many quixotic clans
    devoted to multiplayer versions of Thief that do not yet
    exist. This value may be followed by the abbreviation of
    a clan name, up to four letters, in parentheses. For
    example: C+++(SPCF), C++(CLH), C++(STFU), etc.]

    +++ I founded a clan.
    ++ I'm a member of a clan and participate in its role-playing threads.
    + I belong to a clan, but for now I'm mostly passive about it.
    = I don't belong to a Thief multiplayer clan.
    - I think Thief multiplayer clans are lame.
    ? You people are members of the Klan?

    ========================================O
    * Have you made any fan missions?
    E [Editing with DromEd or UnrealEd]

    +++ I've made and distributed several fan missions!

    - Editing is for grinds.
    ? Haven't given it much thought.

    ========================================O
    * Have you played any fan missions?
    F [Fan mission playing]

    +++ I play every fan mission -- even the flaccid hammer missions.
    ++ I play the fan missions that get good reviews.
    + I've played a fan mission.
    = I've skipped the fan mission scene so far.
    - I think fan missions are a joke. Bunch of no-account hacks....
    ? Whatloader?

    STORY===================================O
    * How do you feel about the apparent romantic tension between Garrett and
    Viktoria?
    V [Viktoria Factor]

    +++ More of this chemistry and unbearable sexual tension, please!
    ++ I can see why Stud and Deciduous Damsel would be mutually intriguing.
    + I suppose it makes sense...but weren't they bitter enemies before?
    = Story, schmory. Point me to the loot!
    - The 180, from enemies in T1 to flirts in T2, was a narrative disaster!

    FAVORITES===============================O
    * Name three favorite missions from each game and your one least favorite
    mission (a total of 7 missions), to give fellow taffers a sense of your tastes:
    TRAI, BAFF, CRAG, BONE, ASSN, THVG, SWRD, HAUN, MAGE, LOST, SONG, UNDR,
    RTRN, ESCP, BEDF, MAWC, BLOO, GEST, INTF, RECV, FRAM, BUSH, EAVS, BANK,
    BLKM, COUR, BLUD, LIFE, CARG, KDNP, CASE, MASK, SABO, ....

    +++ It's a special favorite of mine.
    ++ I like it a lot.
    + I like it somewhat.
    = I'm indifferent to it.
    - Eww! Get it away!
    ? I have no opinion about it.
    =========================================================================O
    ADDENDA:

    A: HOW TO EXPRESS RANGES OF OPINION:
    If your status ranges between two views, depending on your mood, the
    second option goes in parenthesis. So if you sometimes think the Vikki
    love story is great but sometimes burn with anger that they included it,
    your option would look like this: V+++(V-). This reads, "My view ranges
    from 'More of this chemistry and unbearable sexual tension, please!' to
    'The 180, from enemies in T1 to flirts in T2, was a narrative disaster!'"

    If your status is one thing, but you wish it were another or are trying
    to make it another, the second option follows a right angle-bracket. So
    if you mostly play on Normal difficulty but aspire to play mostly on
    Expert, your option would look like this: X+>X+++. This reads, "I mostly
    play on Normal, but I hope mostly to play on Expert someday."

    B: MISSION NAMES
    TRAI "A Keeper's Training"
    BAFF "Lord Bafford's Manor"
    CRAG "Break from Cragscleft Prison"

    Responsible for overseeing Studio Trophis projects, Richard's designs are influenced by the best of Japanese console gaming.

    To quote and paraphrase the instructions at http://www.geekcode.com/geek.html:

    The Taffer Code consists of several categories. Each category is labeled with a letter and some qualifiers. Go through each category and determine which set of qualifiers best describes you in that category. By stringing all of these 'codes' together, you are able to construct your overall Taffer Code.... Some of the qualifiers will very probably not match with you exactly. It is impossible to cover all possibilities in each category. Simply choose that qualifier that most closely matches you....

    After you have determined each of your qualifiers, you need to the construct your Taffer Code Block. Also, pay particular attention to case-sensitivity, there can be a big difference between a 'w' and a 'W'.

    Re: The Taffer Code v1.0

    Nice sidescroller there, Grund.

    I've made a little addition. There were a couple cases where I wasn't sure of my answer (because my opinion was more or less between two of the answers). In those cases, I will signal it with square brackets.
    Example: I like all of the Trickster minions a lot, but some of them are a special favorite of mine, so my code is T++[+].

    //begin taffercode
    1d+++2++3? H=M-N=R-T++(+++)U+++Z++(+++) G=L=O=P=Q=I-K- A++ B= D++ T+++ J+++S-W+Y= C++(STFU) E= F+ V+ BONE++LOST++RTRN+++FRAM+++BLUD+++SABO++RECV=
    //end taffercode

    Dark Angel: BBTZOE! = "Bring Back The Zombies Or Else!", I assume.

    [EDIT] So this is what you do instead of working on the Grymoire, Grundy?

    [EDIT #2] I think that round brackets only confuse matters more, but it ain't my code.

    Yes, the cost of 80-column ascii. :sigh: It brings back memories of USENET, in the days when there were only about 100 FAQs.

    I've made a little addition. There were a couple cases where I wasn't sure of my answer (because my opinion was more or less between two of the answers). In those cases, I will signal it with square brackets.
    Since we're aping the Geek Code, here's how the convention goes:
    • If your view varies or ranges between two views, depending on mood, the second option goes in parenthesis. So if you sometimes think the Vikki love story is great but sometimes burn with anger that they included it, your option would look like this: V+++(V-). This reads, "My view ranges from 'More of this chemistry and unbearable sexual tension, please!' to 'The 180, from enemies in T1 to flirts in T2, was a narrative disaster!'"
    • If your view is one thing, but you wish it were another or are trying to make it another, the second option follows a right angle-bracket. So if you mostly play on Normal difficulty but aspire to play mostly on Expert, your option would look like this: X+>X+++. This reads, "I mostly play on Normal, but I hope mostly to play on Expert someday."

    That way, we stay consistent with the parody.

    thus spake sailoreagle:
    I like all of the Trickster minions a lot, but some of them are a special favorite of mine, so my code is T++[+].
    The correct way to express that idea in "foobar code" generally and in Taffer Code particularly would be: T++(+++), which means "My view varies from 'I like Trickster Beasts a lot' to 'Trickster Beasts are a special favorite of mine'". Including only a single + in the parentheses would instead mean that your view ranges toward T+.

    Heh, we all love filling in questionares about something we're actually interested in)

    begin="taffercode";
    1d="+", 1g="+", 2="+++", 3="?", h="++", m="++", n="++";
    r="+++", t="-", u="-", z"==", g="?", l="-", o="=", p="+", q="=";
    i="+", k="-", a="+", b="=", d="=", x="+++" j="+++", s="=";
    w="=", y="-", c="+", e="+", f="++", v="-", crag="++", assn="++";
    undr="+", bone="-", fram="+++", bush="+++", carg="+++";
    end;

    Interesting, but as always with these things, there is never the option you want in some questions, so you have to pick the closest one

    Parentheses have been a part of the Geek Code tradition for a long time. They seem to get the job done despite their lack of right angles.

    That's what people said about the Daxim relations graph too. I, however, have rarely laughed so hard in ShockGen, before or since

    You might also have made it a little more user-friendly, as it seems a lot of people either can't be arsed, or just can't work it out. I think an HTML form with boxes to tick or fill in would have returned more results)
    One things for sure though..Thief1 and all its creatures will come out the clear favourite, as they inexplicably do in every poll I've seen, even though T2 is blatantly the superior game. I thing most people vote for T1 on sentimental and nostalgic grounds, whether they like to admit it or not.

    That's your opinion. People can have different opinions than you and not be necessarily wrong.

    Umm..yes, I know its my opinion- I wrote it. But thanks for pointing it out to me anyway. From now on just take it for granted that anything I write is my opinion, that way I won't have to start every sentence with 'I think...', or 'In my opinion...', or 'I'd like to make it perfectly clear that this is my view, only my view, and in no way represents majority thinking...', or 'Please Sailoreagle don't take offense at what I'm about to say, as it may in some way differ from your ideas...' etc.

    Well, now we know. Nothing you say will be an objective fact, only you're opinion. Thanks for the clarification.

    Lol, a post to repeat exactly what I just wrote was almost as pointless as this one.
    That was intended for SE, to take what I say as an opinion, as she does seem to take offense rather quickly. Thanks for taking SE's part all the same, but we all know shes quite capable of arguing for herself.
