If anyone figures out the Shield of Ancients Puzzle...

Post here! You have to turn slabs, then I assume lay some runes down you find....but i've spend a whole night. The clue is vauge as hell, and does not give you any idea on where to place the runes after turning the tiles.

I've blown through this game, untill now. Basicaly I cant play anymore...retrieving this item is key to the plot, and I know that, like most of the game, I could probably kill a few dozen people and achieve the same result, but I like to actualy DO things in a game and not ruin it by offing everyone and thing in the game even if you can (For example mindless slaying of Morrowind...something I hold Arx in higher regard for actualy making a person care about the story instead of turning it into a FPS hack and slash.)

Yeah, FWIW I'm stuck there too; I'm just exploring the rest of the places available to me and hoping I find a clue somewhere else. After all, I've never before seen those runes that're on the inside & outside of the circle of slabs. (No, I don't mean the runes on the slabs...) For instance, I found the crypt does extend further downwards, past that pink field, and has some pretty nice armor down there...

All six of the "Broken Glass" symbols were found in the earlier parts of the Crypt. There is a Sun, Moon, Moon w/dot, Circle, Stick Figure, and C shape.

The clue is sun is setting, go towards the rising sun..blah blah. I assume that North, the Sun is then south is probably the Moon with the Dot (would represent the sun/moon transition...however if you go by shape, then the Line with the Dot makes mroe sense to be the Mood and dot, then the single line should be the Moon, bah...its very stupid...and my only guess is since the Company is German, it makes ALOT of sense to them, and none to us

Guess i'm with you...time to explore the rest of the Crypt. Or...just go kill the damn Rebel and get Kharoz or whatever the Evil Guardian way hehe

It's actually pretty simple. Before you entered the puzzle room, there were six small rooms positioned around a large room (stained glass windows overlooking). On the floors in the six smaller rooms are symbols carved into the stones. You just need to set the symbols on the disks to match the order of the symbols on the floors in the six rooms.

Match it up so that the outer edge of the disks match the order of the six rooms. Then place the stones on the pedistals so that they match up with the symbol on the inside of the discs.

It's hard to descibe... hopefully this makes sense.

Ratchin, fratchin, ding, dang, flippintejippin... (yes, that was the censored version of my reaction).

I'd been trying just about everything except the obvious... dammit. I'd been trying to combine the opposing symbold to make some sort of numbers, tried turning the disks to make the symbols appear in the same orientation as they are on the ground outside.... arrrrrrgh....

    (Oh, and thanks, DN )

Neojin: Imagine if you were to drag the six disks into the center of the previous area, the one with the stone coffins down below and the symbols carved in the ground up on the 2nd floor. The outermost symbol of each disk needs to match the symbol it'd be pointing at.

Yeah, about that, I'm having a couple problems down there, so if anyone else got right to the very bottom of the crypt, any input is appreciated:

    spoiler:
I've gotten through the maze of lost souls, past the watchman, and down into Proxellis' tomb. Used the four orbs to open the tomb, but as soon as I take the helmet, the ghost freaks out and unleashes some lich-guardians on me. The stairs out have been blocked by a gate, and there are no evident switches or buttons, so I figure I have to kill them. If so, how the hell do I kill those things? They never seem to take a hit! If not, how the hell do I get out? Very frustrating.

Or, alternately, if anyone knows a way to kill the lich-king like undead, (they're heavy spellcasters, summon zombies, etc) I'd appreciate it.

Hrm... as a mage-type player, I might have problems here, as I don't believe I have the strength to wear the item. I'll have to ponder this some more. Thanks for the info.

    Anytime

Btw, if you can't wear it but you still want it, try just wandering down the hall casting 'reveal'. Takes a heckuvalot of mana, but you can manage it. (it's what I did when I was mapping it all out before I nicked the thing )

I can't find the stone that has the crescent moon sans dot on it anywhere, I assume it's either in one of the locked rooms on the upper levels, or in that small locked chest. confirmation of my assumption and hints on how to open them would be much appreciated.

I can't remember which stones go where but I'll see if this helps.

    spoiler:
Have you checked all of the graves in the rooms surrounding the big crypt?

If you've already gotten that one than I can go back and check where I got it. Just let me know.

I've opened all the graves I can get to, I fear I may have picked it up, decided it was worthless, and then thrown it away in some random place, but I don't think I did.

OK I'm not exactly sure where the specific stone you are looking for is, but I will list out the places where I picked up mine.

    spoiler:
On level 5 go to the circular room, from there head left and it will be in the second crypt you come to.

On level 6 you will find one in the big crypt room: look in the second crypt on the left from the entrance to the room.

Also on the 6th floor is a stone that can be found by going into the upper crypts on the left in the middle room (that's a mouthful).

On level 4 you will find two by descending the stairs on the right and left, searching those tombs carefully.

The last can be found on level 5 by taking the right path after the entrance and going into the last tomb: there should also be a secret passage in this room.

    Good luck!

On the second phase of the puzzle... where exactly are the pillars? I was under the impression that they were in the "puzzle room", but nothing seems to be useable (okfine, I wasn't paying attention to the cutscene... I don't know why I don't take cutscenes in this game very seriously ).

the pillars are those blocks outside the circles... you should just put the stones on them if i remember correctly

About that crescent moon piece, I remember it was on the first crypt level ( no zombies or mummies on this level) in a corpse laying on the ground next to a bunch of tombs you can pickaxe.

Maybe someone can walk a complete moron through this. I've been trying just about every combination for the last 2 days and can't figure it out.

There are symbols in front of the movable discs:

    1) 3 DOTS
    2) V
    3) l
    4) L
    5) ]
    6) -l

Which of the rune symbols match to those? And where exactly do you place the rune disc? On the triangular pillar or the symbol on the floor next to the pillar?

    Any help would be appreciated.

first lets redefine your symbol definitions:

    1) a crescend moon
    2) a crescend moon with an added dot in its center
    3) a sun (a solid circle with 6 rays)
    4) an open circle (like the letter O)
    5) a rectangular shape with one open side
    6) a line with a shorter line perpendicular to one side and two diagonal ones on the other side ( basically: "-K" )

the first part of the puzzle:
    spoiler:
the each rotating disk in the room has two 'windows' to select symbols, the first puzzle is about setting the correct symbols in the outer windows
in the six rooms bordering the large center crypt, the symbols can be found carved in the floor. The discs need to be set so that the symbols have the exact same order and orientation as in the six rooms:

when you look at you map:

      (5) (3) (4)
    *
      (6) (2) (1)

    * = entrance to the room

    second part of the puzzle:
    spoiler:
now the outer 'windows' are aligned with the floors of the six rooms, the inner 'windows' indicate the symbol to place on the cylindrical pedestals on top the outside of the mechnism. (the game does hint that these pedestals are to be used, by using them as the center of rotation during the ghost's explanation, but admittedly I only noticed this after I solved the puzzle and replayed the explanation)

    tip after solving the puzzle:
    spoiler:
after you've solved the puzzle there's a hidden passage to ...

I actually found two interesting things in there.
    The hidden passage to
    spoiler:
the death rune (was it mortis?)
    and the
    spoiler:
switch behind the shield grave, which opens the centre tomb, containing the mithril leggings

One satisfying area of the game, definitely

    Thanks for the help.

I was looking at it all wrong.
Once you get which direction it lays out, it's not too hard.

i have solved it, finnally taking all the bits and pieces of info you guys have so generously refrained from giving in an intelligent order. here is the solution to the puzzel.

first part. enter the room and turn the outter pictures of the circle starting from entrance to the room left and continuing clockwise

1.stone henge shape (i refer to it as house)
2.the full sun(circle with lines extnding from it)
    3.the circle
    4.the crescent
    5.the crescent with a dot
6.and the mishshapen one (if you cant figure this one out, it's the last one you havent used)

the ghost will now say that your on the right track

step 2. place, on the now raised pedestals behind the triangle columns the 6 glass shards.
place them according the the inner picture

ie. if the inner picture is the cirle place the circle on it's corrosponding collumn.

congrats youve just solved the most confusing damn pussle in the world mabey if the ghost would have said hey figure out how these should be placed, i would have figured it out long ago. (setting to rising confused me, i matched the pictures from setting to rising clockwise in a logical order).

Ok, I have Arx for Xbox and I have read everything here...(hope I didn't miss something simple!) I have all 6 runes and thesignsin the middle are lined up correctly. I can get two runes to "combine" with the pedistals but none of the others will. What I mean by that is...two runes disapair while the other s just stay on top of the pedistals. Do I have a problem with my disk or is there something I am not doing correctly. Please help!
