The explosive barrel has to be placed very exactly at the right spot. My notes state that the barrel has to stand upright and as close as possible to the wall it is supposed to destroy. Select the spot carefully, save your game, and then try it. If you do not hit the spot exactly, the outcome is as you described.
So I went back and tried to put the barrel as close as possible. It didn't work. Then I tried to put it in the left and then the right corner. That also didn't work. After that I left a bit of space between the barrel and the wall. You guessed it, it didn't work. You know what did work? Dropping the barrel so it lands on it side and blowing it up like that. What a strange little bug.

Usually, though, these invisible barriers should not come into the player's way during gameplay, so if you hit such a barrier, just go back - there's usually nothing behind there which you should reach.
The barrier I was talking about is not in a hard to reach area though. It's right there on the edge of the balcony. But you are right about it not being anything game-breaking. It's really just something I noticed that might also be a bug which is why I mentioned it.

Have you got a save, maybe we can improve the situation and add it to the dml.

I remember a barrier at the right edge of the balcony above the main entrance to the mansion. I would not be surprised if that's the one Hilfsaeffchen meant. I also remember there are more such barriers on the hedges connecting to the left edge of the same balcony, possibly erected there in order to prevent the player from reaching the mansion's roof and/or the cemetary. Unfortunately, we can't ask the late Lady Rowena about that any more. Thus, any changes there should be made with caution.

Future players surely wouldn't mind if the barrel behaved a bit nicer. I'll go through my saves and see if I can reproduce that bug.

Edit: Found a save and realized I was just extremely unlucky when I tried to blow up the wall. This time approximately a third of the explosions opened the way forward. Didn't matter whether the barrel was upright or lying on its side. So yeah, not sure my save is of any use. Let me know if you still want it.

That's the one. So it is by design. Bit weird that she didn't put another fence there, but I'm sure she had a reason.

Ahh, yes!! Finally finished this mission on Expert, after all these years. I played it all those years ago on Easy, and Normal.. definitely a bit of a challenge on Expert though, without the sword.

Highlight that brought a tear to my eye was when I went to leave via the front gate and I bashed one of the last 2 guards at the exit on the noggin, and when I picked him up... there was my (last) name. I remember Lady R telling me that she had put a surprise in the game near the end for me.

Still one of my favorites. Great job!!

    You will always be remembered.

Finally managed to sit down and play this one through start to finish in one go. A bit of head scratching along the way. 400 loot short of max but all 8 secrets. 2hr 53mins.

Amazing mission. Just wish I could've sided with Rowena. Don't like to be the "good guy" especially if I sympathize with Rowena more than the other characters in the mission.

My garden key doesn't open the door to the new barracks

I'm using the walkthrough for this part because I thought I was totally sideways but I think something is wonky. I'm kind of stuck at this point

My notes are very vague on what opens this door, but one sentence suggests that the lock can simply be picked.

What do you mean by new barracks? or was that a typo for NE barracks, there's a NE barracks in the basement but that door is not locked (as are all other barracks in the mansion, total number of barracks 3, see my lootlist for maps).

Sorry, by new barracks, I mean "barracks". There's the old barracks and the barracks with a gate in the way. In the UW days I called it a portcullis. Northwest corner of the map, by the three statues, west side door/portcullis, according to the walkthrough on thiefmissions, section 17,
Go north, then west all the way past the garden, then turn south. Use the Garden Key here, too, and you'll spy the barracks building to the right. Except the key doesn't work there. Neither does picking. I just tried, just to make sure I wasn't crazy.

That's the door to the basement, the barracks is on your right as you look at that door, having said that the garden key should open the basement door, I've just checked from an old save. Don't know why it's not working for you, can up upload a save, might be able to work out why not.

Having said that there are a number of ways into the basement, check my lootlist for map 3, you can access the basement from the kitchen, south lobby, SE garden and central courtyard.

To sum up the state of the doors there: The basement door can be unlocked with the garden key, as well as another gate in roughly the opposite direction. The door to the barracks, located in a hut with an archer patrolling on the roof, is not locked at all. There is a smaller hut next to the barracks, and the door to this hut should open if you use your lockpicks on it. An explosive barrel should be the most memorable object you find in there.

Thanks guys, when I get home later I will upload my save file and hopefully someone can take a look. I really hope I'm not just being incredibly dense

So... I just got home and tried opening the gate without a key. Opened right up. Wow, that's... Well ok.

You are right. Meanwhile I played this part of the mission again, and the gate I mentioned was not locked.

I think I psyched myself out and forgot that if a door isn't locked, trying a key or lockpick won't open the door.

Perhaps the door is cursed, and at first pretends to be locked. But once all available keys and lockpicks have been tried, the door suddenly becomes unlocked.
