The thing isspoiler:I have gone all the way to the end of this FM ( ie to the end of the tunnels to the part where I believe the mission is supposed to end ) and have tried backtracking but cant get back to the prison. I cant get further than a big pool of water that I presume I fell into when entering the tunnels ( I put this mission on hold for a few days and cant remember! ) can anyone help me to get back to the prison?

You were in the right area to start with . Don't go back , rope arrow up . This area was unfair - the player should have been given a vine arrow or a more fitting texture should have been used . It's one thing to obscure a texture to make finding it difficult , however there seems to be a growing trend towards using something unlikley .
Have you found the diary yet?
spoiler:You don't need to go back to the prison - the diary is somewhere between the hole you fell into and the area you thought was the end...which is far from the end - the tunnel continues if you rope arrow up a bit.
If you want the exact location:
spoiler:The diary was taken by another Thief - but he was killed by the bugbeasts - the diary lies next to his body in the bugbeast area. Just beyond that, rope arrow up - you're about halfway through.

The entire tunnel area is a clay texture which a rope arrow can attach to. The "roof" of the area you are referring to is too high for a rope arrow. Just in case someone tried it, I put a rope arrow on the ground by the bones.

Thanks a lot for the prompt replies and good advice but I had already used the rope arrow and had clearly got to the end of the tunnels, eliminating all the AI in the process,so that I have the level to my self.
spoiler:I have returned all the way back to the spot where I supposedly fell through a hole in the floor and re-searched apparently every inch of ground in between, re-finding Rheons body and every thing but I cannot for the life of me find that damn diary! I am at this moment sat in the library next to the church surrounded by fistful sizes of tufts of hair whimpering about that BLOODY DIARY!!
Any help very greatfully received, as I have to finish this mission quickly as there have been another TWO, yes count em, TWO new missions released in the last couple of days and I desperately need to grow some more hair quickly!
