Garrett and the Beanstalk - Dec 2003

A really interesting and unique mission Kfort - just in time for panto season too!

How many bonuses are there? I found 3 and 3 of the 4 secrets. I'm straight back up that beanstalk to find that missing secret!

    Great mission, Kfort !

Did you write all of those little short stories ? The one about the Thief and the Innkeeper was funny !

    I also had great fun
    spoiler:
climbing all over the giant furniture. It was like being a little kid again

Same here. All of them had terrible accidents. Somehow each of them fell on my arrows several times.
    spoiler:
Just because I hate ghosting and didn't realize you could grab the broomstick and use it like a black jack until I replayed the mission.

This was a very highly imaginative mission and a lot of fun to play. A lot of work went into this and it shows. I just finished on Normal with only 2 of 4 secrets and
    spoiler:
    2 bonus objectives.
I'll have to play again on Expert.
    spoiler:
    Those "Cloudbeasts" were great!!!!

Thanks for making such a cool mission!!!

    Hehe, cool fun this one.

I couldn't help but noticing, though, what was the reason for making the doors "double" in the big room in the castle? I could open the doors sometimes and they weren't hilighted (to indicate frobability), and I could hear double closing sounds, too. Really strange... (and I'm not talking about the rooms where there was a little door and a big door next to it; I'm referring to the large doors in the main hall just as you enter the castle; there was a little door "hidden" inside of the big doors.)

I deleted the little door inside of each bigger door and they still opened for me just fine. Was it a pathfinding or AI issue then? I didn't have time to try and figure that part out.

Outstanding mission though. Really creepy, but really fun at the same time!

    Bonuses & secrets

    [Folks]

    (Sounds like a Kipling title!)

(There actually is a Kipling title, Rewards and Fairies, which seems to fit this FM to a T .)

I've only found two secrets -- a trunk in the rafters of the jail-cell hall and the picture that slides up revealing giant coins and giant purses -- and one bonus, rescuing the fairy princess. Can I get hints about the other two of each?

    spoiler:
I parked the Unconscious Damsel in Distress in a low cave next to the beanstalk; I figure she'll keep there on ice until I get the rest of the stuff, eh?

    Thanks,

Thank you all for your wonderful comments!

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. Finals week is a real killer. Should lighten up soon and then I'll be free! (for a few weeks at least)

    Moghedian -
Alas, no, I did not write any of the fairy tales in the hut. I found all those stories and fables on-line. Most are from Aesop's Fables and few I had a harder time placing. I'm really sorry I couldn't include one entitled "The Master Thief" which describes the exploits of a clever thief challenged to pull off three "impossible" heists by a rich lord. He steals the lord's horse from his guarded stables, the sheet off of the lord's bed while his wife is in it, and even the local pastor from out of the village church! A very amusing story, but far too long to put in a Thief book - it would have taken up 30 pages or more because of the small page size.

    Hit Diety -
The little doors within the larger doors were done, as you guessed to help the AI with pathfinding. Apparently AI can't "see" a door if its center is too high above them. My giant doors are just a little too large. The dwarves had a lot of trouble with them - they would walk against them without opening forever. The giant was a little better, but sometimes got stuck, too. Placing a smaller, invisible door inside the big door seemed to fix the problem. I tried to make the small doors as intangible as possible, but I forgot about door sounds!

Since several people are wondering about the secrets, here are a few general hints:

    spoiler:
Look high and low. Especially high.

Vine arrows are your friend - be sure to find and use them

The castle is full of secrets (so don't bother look anywhere else)

You may need a weapon. You know . . . something sharp.

    Banners and paintings + Thief = ???

Hopefully these hints will help you discover them on your own. If you are stumped (or just like highlighting spoiler boxes) here are the exact locations:

    spoiler:

    1) In the main bedroom, use a vine arrow to reach the top of the wardrobe. Use the lever and the painting over the bed will slide away, revealing a secret stash

2)In the dungeon/basement, use a vine arrow to reach the rafters. Hop around until you find a foot locker up there. Open it for a little loot. (incidentally, look around in the rafters - there are some random gold nuggets around too)

3)In the entry room (dining room), use a vine arrow (again!) to reach the rafters. Wander around until you hear the crackling of a fire. Search the nearby support beam for a hidden door and grab the magic item hidden inside

    4) The banner in the entry room can be slashed to reveal a secret area.

Incidentally - for the sake of any ghosters out there, on Master difficulty there is an alternative way to reach the secret area behind the banner that doesn't involve property damage. Unfortuantely, I just realized that I forgot to setup the "found secret" trigger for this way. So if you manage to get into the secret area using this method (no slashing the banner) consider this secret to be "found." Sorry about that folks!

Thank you all. I'm glad you enjoyed my level and I hope you have a great holiday! (or winter season or whatever applies)

    Bonuses & Secrets

    [Kfort]

Thanks, I'll go back and hunt for those secrets!

    [Sir Lance]

Yikes, I'm glad I didn't trigger number 3... that would bust my ghost wide open: when you release the prisoners from their cells (which I tried a couple of times), they run out and get into melees with the dwarf guards! I had to reload and not do it.

(By ghost rules, Garrett cannot intentionally trigger melees.)

kfort, #3 didn't trigger for me as being a secret either.

Anyway, that means I found all the secrets on my own, woohoo! (Not something I do terribly often.)

Cool, in that case, I understand completely then. I don't think I would have thought about doing the extra door trick to get around it. Nice thinking.

I don't think so. This happened to me first time but I couldn't find a way out. I just had to go back to a previous saved game and make a run for it.

    spoiler:
On the left (as you exit the room) side of the stairs is a flat switch that controls the gate. If you flip the lever before you get the harp, the gate will actually open when you steal it.
