    C5 Properly Paranoid - Mar 2004

Arrrgg! A puzzler. I just had to download a puzzler. Now I will have to finish it or I just won't sleep nights. Since I am truly challenged when it comes to puzzles, I'm guessing it will be a while before I get a decent night's sleep. Basically, I am on Klepto and am stuck.

    spoiler:
I reached the second level, after the elevator. I got the statue key from the hammer room, and figured out how to use it. Got the scepter. Got the conductive plates and used them. Got the Death Ward and used it but nothing happened. Found the button that makes four urns and tries to zap you. Now there seems to be nowhere to go. One of the notes said "light the torches in the hammer room" and I did that, but nothing happened.

    Any clues would be appreciated.

i can't remember what the objectives on this level were - but you're most likely missing:

    spoiler:
did you play the harps in the room you started in?

if you need more clues than that about that section:
    spoiler:
you have to play them in an order that sounds the same as the victrola in another room up there

    as for torches:
    spoiler:
it makes some loot appear is all, i think

and as for getting out if you're stuck there:
    spoiler:
you rope arrow up in the library

hope that helps! i had the "have to finish this mission no matter what" syndrome with the gussie's dream one, so know how you feel!

    Thanks, raetsel!
    spoiler:
I did play the harps, as well as stole money from homeless children. I am SO wrong. Anyway, I am still about 700 short on loot. I roped up in the library but there didn't seem to be anything to do in there.

    Thanks, Sxerks!
    spoiler:
I had used the ward first. Guess I was flashing back to the Cathedral or something.

Anyway, finally managed to finish all three difficulties.
    spoiler:
That chest with the arrow trap was...frustrating.

All in all a very fun mission, despite being so puzzle-ridden. A healing fruit or two would have been nice, though.

This was looking to be my favorite mission until I hit the basement , at which point it simply ceased to be any fun at all . Does anyone have a special technique to get past that crazy arrow trap ?

I assume you mean the chest? or the very bottom.... either way the answer is the same.

    about the death ward

    spoiler:
use it after you loot the room, the book inside explains its use

and a general question, which of the three difficulty/play styles/mini games really is your favorite?

    basement question

Can anyone give me a clue about what to do down there...once I get into the hallway after the mech head lights go off and the walls close in....is there a combination I should know about...........frustrating.

In the first room on the second floor there is a parchment that says "crossword puzzle" in your inventory. The answers are the code.

    EDIT: BTW, maloo-
    spoiler:
I guess I'm a little confused. Did you activate the switch before you went into that area? It turns off the mech head, iirc. The walls still close in though.

I think I figured out the statues without the glasses:

    spoiler:
The statues will try to kill you, but can only see what is directly in front of them

    and a little more blunt

The arrows point the path of the fire

How's about backing up a bit?

    [Anyone]

For those of us who haven't figured out everything except the very last bit yet...

    spoiler:
I have one sunburst charge, which I stuck into one of the pillars. But I have no idea where the other two are.

I got the one in the harp room, but I have no idea in the world where the other two are. Death ward? Conductive plates? Urns that try to "zap" you?

I found the statue-key, but I have no idea how to use it. Or where. And I can't get past the arrow trap to open the chest in the prime room... is there some way to turn it off?

    Help!

    spoiler:
There's a room with unlit torches on the pillars. You need to light them with the flares found in the workshop.

    Dafydd -
    spoiler:
you use the "Statue key" on a pedestal in the room at the end of the Art Gallery. There's a guard standing in the gallery in front of that door. If you've been trying to avoid him, you will have missed that area. There's no way to sneak past him except by using the invisibility potion. The Statue key will get you into a workshop where you'll find the conductive metal plates mentioned. Also flares that are required to light the torches in another room on that same level. That will get you one of the other explosive devices.

The other one is in an "armoury" room. There are 4 small safes on the wall and some cubbyholes with 4 different types of arrows in them. You have to use each arrow on the appropriate symbol to open the safes. Once they are open, the chest in there will also open and you'll find the other explosive device.

The Death ward is locked in a room upstairs (I think). You use outside a room that is off of the hall through the other door in the Art Gallery AFTER you have been inside the room.

Ok, I've completed all objectives (on expert) except activating the switch on the roof, and the loot objective, and I can't activate the switch until I have the loot. I'm short 263 loot. I'm pretty sure I've solved all the puzzles, but am thinking I must have missed one because I'm short on the loot. Can anyone please give me some hints where this elusive stash might be, or maybe point to some tricky hiding places I might have missed?

I didn't find any loot at all in the basement where the columns and statues are, so I'm guessing maybe I missed a secret down there.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dafydd: I'm afraid I don't remember exactly where all the charges were, but as far as some of the other puzzles here are some spoilers.

    The Conductive Plates:
    spoiler:
You find the plates in the room the Mechanist is guarding after the room with the paintings. If you want to loot the paintings room, you pretty much have to take out that guard. Anyway, when you take the paintings, the golden heads activate and start spitting arrows at you. However, if you replace the paintings with the plates as you go, the heads never activate.

    The 'Zapping' Urns:
    spoiler:
The room on the right after the Death Ward room. There are two pedestal-type dealies with four circles. Look behind them.

EDIT: didn't see that Nightwalker had already addressed the Death Ward one.

    Brain foggy

    [Nightwalker]

Thanks, I got the charge from the chest in the armory. But... invisibility potion? I certainly haven't encountered that!

I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to ghost this. For one thing, I cannot pick the lock on the room the patrolling combot guards in the tiny bit of time he's away from there... and that room is too brightly lit to hide from him in there anyway; I might, conceivably, be able to pick the lock, open the door, and stand in the shadow of the doorway as he passes, but I'm pretty dubious. I think I'm going to have to take out the combot.

And if I do that, I may as well gas the guard. Besides, if I'm to loot the paintings in there, even with the conductive plates, I obviously can't do it with the guard watching me. Oh, this is maddening!

I've only been able to ghost one C5 mission so far (frozen mines) and nearly ghosted a second (Maelstrom -- couldn't get down into the flooded hold without being briefly spotted by ghosts). Here's another I can't seem to ghost.

Hm... if I could pick the lock and hide in the shadow of the doorway, then use the invisibility potion to get behind the guard (closing the door behind me), then nudge him all the way forward, I might still be able to ghost this. I haven't given up yet!

Where can I find that miraculous invisibility potion?

Edit: News flash for Nightwalker -- you can sneak past that guard without any chemical aid! I got the door open -- did it in two stages (I'll explain in the ghost report, if I ever finish this thing) -- and stood in the doorway; Mr. Combat-bot didn't see me. Then, while he was fooling around at one of the other doors, I dashed out, got the poker, and dashed back to my shadow. Next time he left, I mossed the doorway, then moved into the room towards the guard but along the wall (moving at normal crouch speed). He grumbled -- "come into the light, that I might see thee better!" -- but didn't alert. I closed the door and crept along the right-hand wall... and he never said anything else until I passed him, whereupon he unalerted ("t'was just the moss in mine ears," or somesuch).

Anyway, I nudged him a bit -- not enough yet, but he does seem to be nudgeable -- and now I'm in the workshop with the light out, having fun.

    Thanks,

    Dafydd

    spoiler:
After I lit all 4 torches, the explosive device appeared on the "altar" type thingy at the back of the room.

    bassmanret -
    spoiler:
There's no secret down in the basement area. The loot is all on the main floors. Did you find the torc and blue gem that appear on the wall in the Torch room after you've lit all the torches? There's also a little gold hammer on the altar in that room that's easy to overlook.
If you're still short on loot, let me know and I'll make up a loot list for you.

Dafydd - Good for you! I should have known you'd find a way to do it if anyone could. You, Old Man and Peter never give up on these situations. I'm afraid I don't have the patience to make a really good ghoster.

    Progress...

    [Nightwalker, et al]

All right, I set all the explosive charges in their places. I looted two of the paintings, and a funny thing happened: the light went out! Alas, I discovered that if I looted the third painting, the light goes back on again. Oh well .

I got the zapping urns, but I haven't yet found the deathward. It's upstairs, you say? Didn't run across it. Any clues?

I noticed that the watcher upstairs is attached to a lock... is there a key to this lock? I can imagine unlocking it (to turn off the watcher, perhaps?) with a key, but I don't think I could pick it before the face turned back and spotted me. I haven't tried it, though, so I don't know for sure.

I need the loot in the mummy room, so I need the you-know-what.

And has nobody figured out how to beat the arrow-trapped chest? I can't get close enough to pick the lock without being peppered with arrows and kilt daid. Can it be turned off somehow?

    Thanks,

    Dafydd
