Randy Smith leaves ISA (Official statement)

When Ion Storm embarked on the Thief 3 project, I knew I had to bring on experienced Thief folks to ensure that the game would be true to the spirit of the first two games in the series. The Thief community deserved no less than to see the legacy of those earlier games honored and the trilogy begun by Looking Glass completed as planned. Randy Smith, a key member of the Thief and Thief 2 teams, was among the first people I brought onto the project and was a pivotal part of the Thief 3 development team. Though he'd never been a project director before, he stepped up, helped build a quality team and contributed to the creation of a wonderful game that the world will soon be able to enjoy.

Randy is well-respected at Ion Storm, both as a designer and as a person, and I'm sure he'll find success in the future. Having said that, there comes a time in every project's development when the creative heavy-lifting is done and the job of final bug-fixing and preparation for ship begins. That's where Thief 3 is right now, a fact that led to some internal friction and unresolvable conflicts that led to Randy's departure.

Situations like this are never pleasant but, if there's a silver lining, it will be found in the game Randy helped to shape during his tenure with Ion Storm. As many in the press have already seen and experienced, Thief 3 is a fun, compelling game, one that brings the first Thief trilogy to a fitting conclusion. I hope fans, old and new, agree.

    Warren Spector
    Studio Director, Ion Storm

To say it in advance, I think it's best that we NOT speculate on why Randy's leaving and simply thank Warren for taking the time to write and publish this statement. We all know of Randy's incredible contributions to the Thief series and should be satisifed that he got to work on the last game until the final months of development.

TDS is almost done so it's not like they're firing him because some massive feature or storyline component is being left out/in the game.

NO! I can't believe this. Randy was the backbone to the Thief series! I just hope he left a big enough impact on the final release.

We'll miss you Randy, and PLEASE let us know where you go on to next!

    That's just great. (Sarcasm)
They probably made him leave because he wanted to make the game great for the fans and now ISA wants to throw him out because of that. Seems to me like Warren Specter is an A-- no other way of putting it. I will NOT be buying Thief 3 of DS now. Way to go WS I hope you get tons of cash from the two or three people who will buy your game. Now the fans have no reasurance that the good stuff will be in Thief 3/DS and it seems now more than ever that WS wants this to be HIS game.

I just speculated over this quote.

I just want to say that I think its brave of wspector to write an official statement about this. Its that kind of upfrontness I would like from the industry. Remembering the strife from many other titels over the years, things have not been this pretty nor official.

For myself, I have a lot of trust in warren to bring this trilogy home. We can all have dream as what Thief 3 could be, as every gamer has about their not yet releashed sequel. But let's be realistic, with what they had and what they could do, I think T3 is going to be a great game. I cannot do more that way, and see how the game playes when it's released in may. What surprises me is how this excellent community went to a bickering flock of nay-sayers. We used to be behind the developers all the way through LGS, trusting them, hoping that what they did was for the good. And most of the time they came through. I just wish we could take Warren under that wing too. I mean, he was the guy at Origin supporting LGS back in the Underworld and System Shock days.
