    Thief III Editing Wiki (discussion)

To extend the use of this thread I'm encouraging discussion about ordering the content of the wiki better. People adding contributions here and there is good, but it helps to have some sort of common approach.

    - scumble

    David:

We've decided to forgo the standard "Make a website" routine with T3ed and instead have chosen to try out a Wiki approach.

For those of you that don't know what a wiki is, it is basically a collection of articles that any registered user can create and edit. The biggest example of a wiki is the encyclopedia Wikipedia.

When it works properly it is like a great on-topic library of information.

Now before everyone goes running in there to edit and add everything under the sun please take a look at what is already there and try to keep things in a similar style (ie forum links to tutorials, size three titles etc).

Please try to keep things clear and simple.
Before adding a page, make sure one doesn't already exist on the subject.
Please do not spam the wiki.
    No Edit Wars.

We have no trouble with disabling registrations and restricting creation/editing to those who we feel we can trust.

Please do not restrict editing of your article. If you feel you need to restrict editing on your article please contact one of the WikiAdmins. Currently this is GBM and myself.

So, without any further ado: Fleshworks - the Thief Editing Wiki

An excellent idea. I use the same Wiki software myself (clean and simple).

The Unreal editing wiki has always done well, and so should this one.

Also Dave, I suggest you put in more categories as soon as possible. Oh yes, and backlinks are also helpful...

Perhaps CategoryTutorial, say, to group all of those together.

I prefer the Mediawiki software myself (a la Wikipedia). I just find all the FunnyCapitalisedLinks really hard to read.

I started with MediaWiki but it refused to work properly, both the 1.3 and 1.4 versions had an awful amount of errors. I put it do to it being a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) project and we run a WIMP (lolz) server (Windows, IIS, MySQL, PHP)

Yeah scumble, I've just been reading up on categories.

If you had tried to register on the Wiki and got an error about your username not being a WikiName then you should try again as I've removed that...er..."feature".

Also remember UnrealWiki. After all, it's the "same" engine and the "same" editor.

The Unreal Wiki is already linked to from the t3ed tutorials secton of our wiki:

I notice that some entire tutorial pages are just links to UDN or other sites. Is that ok?

I suppose if someone comes up with their own tutorial, they could add it above the link... so I'm not sure why I just posted this

scumble has just agreed to help with the running of the wiki, and as such has been made a WikiAdmin.

    New Wiki Layout

I have just implemented a new layout - it's not perfect, but considerably less ugly than Wikka's default. It was largely based on the colours of GBM's logo, now to be seen at the top left.

Any particular reason why the new layout only takes up about half of the browser window? Well, actually it takes up a fixed amount of the browser window which for me happens to be far smaller than the available space.

If the content window is too wide it's not so comfortable to read - an old typesetting rule.
Do you have the browser maximised at high resolution? Which browser?

I made a slight change that might accommodate various tastes, but it can be tricky catering for very high resolutions.

These days it's usually left up to the browser to render the text, isn't it?

Well, yeah. My display is 2880 pixels wide, but I normally keep the browser window about 1000 pixels wide. I'm running a relatively recent Mozilla.

I've had trouble getting the content layer to behave itself in IE, so I fixed it at 700 pixels wide. At least that way there's some control

Loving the new layout. I use a res of 1400x1050, so the new width is great.

Today the wiki passed the 20,000 visits marker.

    Yay! \o/

I just found out today that the Thief 3 editing tools have been released. What a blast! I set up an account on the wiki. I hope I can find enough time with school and all to participate!

Wow, this wiki is weird. I've been an admin on Wikipedia for about a year and a half and this is like travelling back in time. I can understand though since getting Mediawiki to run on Windows sounds like a chore.

Can an admin replace GraphicsCardIssues with T3edTroubleShooting on the front page? It covers GraphicsCardIssues and a lot more common problems.

Can an admin edit wikka.css to remove the fixed pixel sizes for fonts and replace them with relative sizes? This means that the browser can select a size based on user preferences and screen DPI, rather than being forced into a certain size by the web page (which results in missing characters on my Linux + Firefox combo).

Missing characters? It seems odd to have to alter the style sheet to get it to work with your machine. Sure you haven't got some trouble with your fonts? I've not personally had this sort of trouble using Linux, so while it may "fix" your problem, I suspect some underlying issue.

You're right - I should have edited my post.

It was caused by my use of Verdana on Linux, with antialiasing turned off at low point sizes. I guess the browser was expecting the font to be antialiased and aligned it accordingly, which caused the error. It looks OK now I have gone back to the default Fedora fonts.

I still think that pixel sizes are evil though, because they prevent the browser sizing the font according to the user's preferences and screen size (unless he manually adjusts it on each and every visit).

I'd recommend that wiki users do a search on a topic they are about to create a page for - it will avoid duplication.

There's a lot that should work its way into the wiki, as there's an awful lot of very useful, if disorganised, information sitting in forum posts going back to march last year.
Maybe it's time the T3edTutorials page was split up into more useful subcategories (with their own pages, rather than just a huge list like it is now); it's quite crowded already and would be even more so with the stuff from this thread.

From looking at what's there already, I think maybe Basics, AI, Scripting, Objects, Sound, and Troubleshooting would be a good starting point (though I'm sure there'd be others needed too).

I was thinking along the same lines myself. The subpages could probably also give an overview of each important area to help people get a feel for each as a particular stage of map building.
It'd also be good to get some discussion going in the wiki thread about organising the content further. In fact, given the way I've started on thread reconstruction, I should move these posts now...

I added Krypt and ProjectX's scripting pages into the tutorial pages under their own heading, but making it more heirarchical would definitely help. More navigation between the various pages would be good too, some pages don't seem to be linked to anywhere and can only be found via search.
