Is it actually an RPG? The press release makes it sound like a hack-em-bash-em action game.
I actually really liked the M&M party based RPGs, but this dosn't sound much like those.
I hope everyone's seen the news. The game Arkane's been working on for the past few years is finally out in the open. It's a 1st person Might & Magic RPG.

How does the gameplay differ from that of Arx Fatalis? Are there stats and skills? Is the world as interactive?
Edit: Sorry guys. Soon.
Does the combat rely more on the player's reflexes (I hope not)? Are there dialogue trees (I hope so)?
Do you have a party (a la Baldur's Gate, Dungeon Master) or are you all alone in the world (Morrowind, Arx)?
Edit: Sorry Guys. Soon.
Is this the savior of sword based melee combat?

Sorry, but I just couldn't resist. To be frank, I'm in the dark just as much as the rest of you. There isn't anything mentioned on arkane-studio's site either, but they will reveal details soon enough I guess.
Whilst a lot of people may have been hoping to see them develop a sequel to Arx right away, I feel that developing a game based on the M+M franchise will have a lot of tangible and intangible benefits.
Intriguing!!
I would have preferred Arx 2 simply because I've never played a Might & Magic game, but I hope that this one brings Arkane lots of deserved attention.
I didn't even know Ubisoft and Arkane were connected. Arkane did a great job of hiding the details though! I also think they have what it takes to make a decent M&M game. Arx was wonderful, and if they plan to reinvent M&M in a fashion similar to Daggerfall and UU on the Source engine then I'm all for it.
It might be possible for this game to have a party-based system. Half-Life 2 had a party system, but who knows. Just as long as the Party AI didn't suck.
So many details not yet unveiled
I wonder how many licenses for the source engine they have? If its only 1 then no Arx 2 on source. I hope Arx 2 is coming, but this is not good news. I only hope this MM game is as good as Arx is.

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is scheduled for a summer 2006 release and will be shown for the first time at the Games Convention in Germany on August 17, so we should know more soon. First screens are expected imminently so check back for an update later today.
Sweet. Thanks for the heads' up.
We also may be getting some videos soon.
What type of uber l33t system will be needed to run this.
I can say, though, that this is the game that the Arx core team, along with Purah, Mike Ryan, and the SS2 Rebirth guy (Blutch) have been working on, with Randy Smith consulting and Kemal (did audio on Thief/SS2/Arx, now at Floodgate) doing audio work.
And these chaps would sure hate to be stuck working on a FPS.
Oh.. Hm. Well, I was hoping for the sequel to one of the best games I've ever played, instead of an iteration of one I've never played.. but Arcane are damn good. I guess I can manage some nervous "wait and see" instead. Sigh.
And I was so looking forward to exploring the icy overworld in Arx 2. Rats.
I must say I'm pretty disappointed that it's not Arx 2, and even moreso that it's Might & Magic (whole series declined into dross, if that's the material they're working with..unless it's a new spinoff similar to the much better HoMM). I'm apprehensive about this one, although the sheer talent working on the title has eased some of my misgivings.
This intrigues me a lot, but mostly because I don't really know what they mean.Ubisoft does boast that it's "the world's first fantasy action game to feature a complete first-person combat system"
It looks like the combat will rely more on the player's reflexes after all.
No exaggeration, they're my two favourite DromEd designers ever. Sounds very promising.Originally Posted by Digital Nightfall
Well, they don't mention RPG, so it sound to me like Arkane's going for the money and developing a straight up fantasy based action fps that will be out on all platforms. Just my bet.
I'll take that bet, CandyStick :) I have faith in the RPGness, so I'm guessing that you'll be pleasently surprised.
I've never played any games in the M&M or Arx series (except for a demo of HOM&M 2) but wasn't the MM series first person to begin with, like Wizardry and Bard's Tale?
EDIT: These guys seem to compulsively exaggerate the ground breaking nature of their games. Arkane Studios claims that Arx Fatalis is "the first real RPG combining a real intriguing story, a deep environment, a high level of interactivity, combined in a user friendly interface". Now Dark Might & Magic is "the world’s first fantasy action game to feature a complete first-person combat system". Someone needs to give these people a lecture on humility. And recognizing stuff that has already happened many times previously.
